WATERLOO, Ont. -- Michelle Wie had to think her 6-under-par 65 would hold up despite a strong wind whipping through Grey Silo Golf Course. It should have been enough, until defending champion Hee Young Park caught fire. The South Korean made her move over the last 10 holes, draining four birdies to match Wies score after Thursdays first round of the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic. Wie, who matched her lowest round of the season, birdied three of the last four holes including an eight-foot downhill putt on No. 18. She said she had the same mindset as last season -- getting out of the gate with a good score in case other golfers continued to go low at Grey Silo. "Thats definitely what I thought today," said Wie, who was off the course before Park started her round. "I was early off and I wanted to just make a lot of birdies early on, especially with 26 under winning it last year, its definitely one of those golf courses where you may have to keep making birdies. I went 6 under today and its not enough. I have to keep making birdies for the rest of the weekend. I still have my work cut out for me." Park, who equalled her opening round score last year when she won with the second lowest score in LPGA history at 26 under, said she surprised herself by grabbing a share of the lead. "I didnt really expect to play well today, because last year and this year pretty different golf conditions -- this year more wet and not firm," Park said. "We played a month earlier than last year, so it was a more windier course condition. We didnt care about other players playing well or not, just one by one shot playing." Park laughed when asked if she could equal her score from last year. "I hope so. Today I was a bit lucky. I didnt really miss my second shots so that I hit the green and had a lot of chance to birdie putt. Also, I tried to put it so I had some uphill easier putts rather than hit it too aggressive downhill." The twosome were one shot better than Chinas Shanshan Feng and two shots ahead of Chinas Xi Yu Lin and Christie Kerr of the U.S. at 4 under. After the top five, 12 players were tied at 3 under. For the first time in three years at the tournament the wind factored into the scoring, as only five players shot better than 3-under par in the first round. Last year, 22 players opened with lower scores. Wie was a measure of consistency though on the day with seven birdies, despite some whipping wind, with her only blemish coming with a bogey on No. 9. "I was consistent and I felt that I judged the wind pretty well today," Wie said. "Tuesday practice round was a lot windier, so I think that was very helpful." Feng had a strong round with five birdies, but she wasnt able to match the leaders down the stretch. "Well, this course is normally a birdie course, so everybodys going to make a lot of birdies," Feng said. "Today, I think the wind picked up a little, so the course was playing longer. I miss a lot of birdie putts, but I stayed patient and I think that was the key." Even though most of last years field had some ridiculously low scores, Feng missed the cut by one. Though she scrambled at times in the first round, biding her time was the key to shooting a low score. "This year here Im not giving myself any pressure. Make it and make it. If I dont make it, its still OK." It was a tough day for the worlds top three players. Top-ranked Stacy Lewis and No. 2 Inbee Park finished at 2-under par, and Lydia Ko, sitting in third in the rankings, came in at 1 over. Sixteen-year-old Brooke Henderson of Smiths Falls, Ont., was the leader among Canadians at 1-under 70. Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., and Jennifer Kirby of Paris, Ont., were at even-par 70, while Charlottetowns Lorie Kane, Erica Rivard of Tecumseh, Ont., and Alena Sharp of Hamilton were at 2-over 73. Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., finished at 3-over 74, while Torontos Rebecca Lee-Bentham and Nicole Vandermade of Brantford, Ont., shot 4-over 75. Henderson also found the wind to be a factor during her round. she finished tied for 35th last year at 10 under. "Its tough with all the wind out there. Its strong and you have to be really careful in club selection and everything," said Henderson, who finished tied for 35th last year at 10 under. "First goal is to make the cut and 1 under, hopefully, will put me in a good position going into tomorrow." Henderson admitted she is a different golfer than she was two years ago in her first LPGA event. "When I was 14 playing the Canadian Open I was definitely a little scared mouse, thats for sure, but Im definitely a lot more comfortable and my game is a lot better, which really helps." ORLANDO, Fla. - The Baltimore Ravens have acquired offensive lineman Jeremy Zuttah from Tampa Bay for an undisclosed draft pick next year. Once the six-year veteran guard-centre passes a physical, he will join the Ravens. Zuttah has played his entire career with the Buccaneers, appearing in 90 games, making 76 starts: 30 games at centre, 41 at left guard and five at right guard. He was a third-round draft pick in 2008. Baltimore general manager Ozzie Newsome says the Ravens are "getting a player who has started at both centre and guard and played well at each position. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When opposing teams scout No. 3 Ohio State, they seldom notice Lenzelle Smith Jr. Buckeyes coach Thad Matta hopes they keep ignoring him. Smith scored 19 points and No. 3 Ohio State pulled away early to beat Bryant 86-48 on Wednesday night. "I think Lenzelle has been tremendous -- nobodys asked me about him this year," Matta said. "But I think hes playing at a very, very high level of being a complete basketball player." Smith, a 6-foot-4 senior guard who does a little of everything, hit 6 of 9 shots from the field including half of his four 3-point attempts. He had eight rebounds and three assists. "I put a lot of work into my game offensively over the summer. And my confidence is off the charts," he said. "My teammates are stretching the defence and are able to find me wide open. A lot of teams, for some reason, are (not guarding) me and Im getting great looks at the basket. Im just driving my legs and trying to get the most arc I can on the ball -- and its falling." There isnt much about Smith that grabs peoples attention. Point guard Aaron Craft is the tough guy who may be as good a defender on the ball as anyone in the country. Swingman LaQuinton Ross is 6-8 with a velvet shooting touch. Sam Thompson comes off the bench to make high-flying dunks. Shannon Scott and big man Amir Williams are game-changing defenders. And then theres Smith. He leads the Buckeyes (9-0) in scoring with 12.9 points a game. Hes shooting 53 per cent from the field, 48 per cent behind the arc and 74 per cent at the free throw line. He adds 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game -- and may be Ohio States best help defender. "Theyre so talented. Thats whats hard about playing them," Bryant coach Tim OShea said. "Who do you really want to leave open? Theyre just an elite team; a very, very, very elite team." Williams added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Buckeyes, who rolled from the outset of the early round game in the Blackrock Gotham Classic. It will conclude on Dec. 21 with the Buckeyes meeting Notre Dame at Madison Square Garden. The Bulldogs (6-5) hung around with the Buckeyes for a while, but then went scoreless over the last 5:25 of the first half and watched the Buckeyes close with an 8-0 run to take a 43-23 lead.dddddddddddd Ohio State then scored the first five points of the second half before Dan Garvins layup ended a drought of 6:40. By then, it was all over. Ohio State has lost focus from time to time against lesser teams after it has taken a big early lead. Not this time. "That was one of the things we talked about in shootaround -- trying to sustain intensity and effort and to keep the focus on the things that we need to get better at," Matta said. "We did a pretty decent job with that." Dyami Starks had 16 points for Bryant, which was playing its second game in three nights. The Bulldogs lost at Notre Dame, 70-59, on Monday night. Starks came in averaging 22.1 points a game, eighth-best in Division I. He had scored at least 20 in five games and 30 in three others. But he was held to 5-of-15 shooting from the field. The Buckeyes led 8-7 early and then scored 14 of the next 18 points to take command. For the game, they shot 52 per cent on 32 of 61. They hit 8 of 20 3-pointers (40 per cent). With Ohio State denying points inside or off the break, Bryant shot 28 per cent from the field (16 of 58). It was 6 of 24 from behind the arc. "I looked at the scores coming in and very few teams have scored 60 points on them -- and they play fast," OShea said. "So I do think that defensively they play national-championship calibredefence." The Bulldogs dropped to 0-5 all-time against Big Ten opponents. Talk about a tough schedule: They played preseason No. 1 Indiana in the opener a year ago -- in their first official game in Division I. They lost that game 97-54. The Buckeyes appear to have everything clicking right now. "Were making great finds, were reading each other," Smith said. "We have great guards on the perimeter and were able to attack the defence and penetrate and kick the ball out. Thats what you want to do. Our shooting has increased over the last three or four games and we want to just keep rolling." ' ' '
ANAHEIM – One of the things Bruce Boudreau did after taking over as Anaheim Ducks coach was have some inspirational quotes painted on the teams dressing room walls at the Honda Center. Words from Muhammad Ali, Jack Nicklaus, John Wooden, Jerry West, Vince Lombardi and Roy Williams are now there to be viewed by players on a daily basis. Does Boudreau have a favourite saying? "No, I think theyre all good. I think theyre all inspirational and the whole goal of those quotes was, quite frankly, who wrote them," he explained. "It wasnt some normal guy. These guys were champions and they talked about hard work and they were willing to do the hard work and thats how they became champions." Winning has not come easy to Boudreau in the NHL playoffs. His teams have won six division titles and posted a .663 winning percentage in 517 regular-season games, but never advanced past the second round of the post-season. His record in the playoffs as a NHL head coach is 27-28 entering Wednesday nights Game 6 showdown with the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center. On Tuesday, the 59-year-old bench boss was asked whats the biggest challenge he faces coaching at this time of year. "Winning," he responded immediately. "The competition is so picked up from the regular season. You watch the pre-season and you go, Wow, this is a really good game, and then the regular season goes on and you go, How can it get any tougher than this? The playoffs come and you think the regular season is a piece of cake compared to what youre going through here. "Its knowing when to practise hard and when not to practise hard, when to make it easy and just keep building them up. Usually youre saying the same message so theyve heard the same message for eight months so you dont want them to get tired of it." The message may be the same, but Boudreau has made a number of changes that have helped turned the tide in his teams second round series against the Kings. "Hes a coach who isnt afraid to make moves in terms of personnel," said Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano. "Hes not a coach that gets set in his ways in terms of the lineup or guys playing in certain positions. He has confidence in guys and hes good with the players in terms of giving them confidence. If hes going to move guys around, hes good at communicating with guys about that. Hes a coach that makes adjustments to other teams." After the Ducks lost the first two games of the series, Boudreau called up defenceman Sami Vatanen from the American Hockey League and played him 20 minutes a night, including on the power play. The Ducks have scored four man-advantage goals in the three games since the Finn was recalled from Norfolk. In general, Vatanen has given the Ducks blue line a different dimension and helped them move the puck more easily against the notoriously stingy Kings. But the adjustments didnt end with Vatanen. In Game 4, Boudreau made the bold decision to start 20-year-old John Gibson, a goalie with zero NHL playoff experience and only three games of regular season experience, over veteran Jonas Hiller, who had won Game 3 in relief of the injured Frederik Andersen. Gibson posted a 28-save shutout in his debut and followed that up with a steady 39-save win on Monday night. After first-line winger Matt Beleskey went down with an injury, Boudreau elevated 21-year-old Devante Smith-Pelly, who had generated some quality chances, but failed to register a point in the series through three games, to the top line alongside Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry. Smith-Pelly has since scored three goals and fired eight shots on net over the last two outings. "I think two things come to mind," said Ducks defenceman Ben Lovejoy when asked what makes Boudreau a good coach. "Just the confidence he gives his players. I know when I first came here that was just eyeopening for me. He puts players in a position where they can be successful and more often than not, playing for him, they are." Lovejoy was traded by the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Ducks for a fifth-round pick during the 2012-13 season. Under Boudreau, he has moved into a top pairing role alongside Cam Fowler. "Then theres his ability to roll four lines and three sets of D," Lovejoy continued. "I think that when youre a defenceman playing nine to 12 minutes a night, you get out there to not make a mistake. Its impossible to have a tight gap when you dont play a lot so we roll four lines, we roll three sets of D and I really think that helps. And, I think, come crunch time, Getzlaf and Perry havent played 26 minutes. Theyre fresh. Theyre ready to go and to carry the rest of the team when the time comes." And while Boudreau is easy for players to like, he is not afraid of making tough calls. In the first round of this years playoffs, Boudreau benched beloved future Hall of Famer Teemu Selanne in Game 4 against the Dallas Stars. It was move that, considering Selannes stature in the game and the dressing room, could have backfired. Instead, the move seemed to spark Selanne, who has two goals against the Kings and picked up an assist in the Game 5 win. "He cares," said Getzlaf, the Ducks captain. "Thats the biggest thing with him. He cares about each of us individually and that makes you want to play harder for him." But the knock against Boudreau has been that he cant get it done in the post-season. Boudreaus Washington Capitals came close to making the conference finals in 2009, pushing the Penguins to Game 7 before ultimately being blown out in the decisive game. "Well, the difference last time was we were down 3-2 going into Game 6 in Pittsburgh and had to win and we did," Boudreau said. "This time, were up 3-2 so I keep telling my wife, Its a different circumstance, so hopefully a different result. "As you go on, the steps get harder and harder and harder and the one thing I have learned in a very brief time is that when they talk about the Cup being the hardest thing to win [theyre right]. I mean, were not even halfway there and [were] realizing how tough it is. This is a heck of a journey you have to make and, again, [youre] trying to keep it fresh, because were not even out of the second round." Last year, the Ducks squandered a 3-2 first-round series lead against the underdog Detroit Red Wings before losing Game 7 on home ice. Getzlaf has noticed that Boudreau has made a subtle change in his approach. "Hes evolved," Getzlaf explained. "Hes done a great job in calming himself down. Bruce tends to get a little wound up at times, emotional in the game and thats good at times." And while Boudreau has managed his emotions better, he is still the same fun-loving guy, who always seems willing to talk hockey with reporters long after the formal media session ends. "I get asked this question a lot and I maintain that youre not going to tell quirky stories about your boss on camera so Im not going to tell them about mine," Lovejoy said with a laugh. "Ive loved playing for Bruce. I think everybody in the locker room does too, but you can ask somebody else for those stories." "At the end of the day, Bruce is a players coach," Cogliano said. "A coach you can approach, talk to and hes up front with you and I think thats why a lot of guys like him." OTTAWA -- The Ottawa Senators said they needed four points this weekend to make a serious playoff push. After an overtime loss Saturday in Montreal and a 3-1 defeat on home ice to the Colorado Avalanche, the Senators walked away from their weekend games with just one point. "It was a big weekend for us and we lose both games," said Senators captain Jason Spezza. "We played good but its a different way to lose every night and results are the only thing that matter right now. "We didnt turn the puck over much, we created a lot but again. It just wasnt enough to win the game and its unacceptable." Andre Benoit, Nick Holden and John Mitchell scored for the Avalanche (44-19-5) while Matt Duchene had two assists as Colorado picked its third win in four games, and seventh in its past nine. Semyon Varlamov made 38 saves. The Colorado goalie was just six seconds away from his second shutout of the season and 13th in his career until Mika Zibanejad scored at 19:54. Robin Lehner made 19 saves in his second straight start for the Senators (28-26-13) since Craig Anderson was injured last week in a loss to the Nashville Predators. "Response to the game (Saturday) was positive," said Senators coach Paul MacLean. "A lot of the statistical things were positive, but at the end of the day its the score that matters and we gave up three goals and only scored one. "We created opportunities to score but I dont think we got to their net as hard as we could have and we missed the net a number of times." Nursing a 1-0 lead heading into the third period, the Avalanche were awarded their first and only power play of the game when Ottawa forward Chris Neil closed his hand on the puck and was called for delay of game. Duchene took a shot during the man advantage that Lehner stopped but the rebound went right to Holden, who was alone at the side of the net and scored at 3:10. "The power play was sharp again, we had only one opportunity but scored aa very important goal for us," Avalanche coach Patrick Roy said before praising the play of his goaltender.dddddddddddd "He was very solid and he made some very key saves. I thought we had too many turnovers in that second period. Our goalie was without a doubt the first star of the game." The Senators pressed throughout the period, but the game was virtually over when Mitchell beat Lehner from in tight with less than three minutes to go in the game. Following a scoreless opening period, Ottawa held a heavy edge in play over the second 20 minutes. Ottawa outshot the Avalanche 20-8 in the second period but it was former Senator Andre Benoit that scored the periods only goal and gave Colorado a 1-0 lead in the process. The Avalanche broke out three-on-one late in the period and after receiving a drop pass from Patrick Bordeleau, Benoit moved into the slot and put a shot over the shoulder of Lehner. "Its always fun to score against an old team and I had lots of family and friends here. Hopefully they keep going in," said Benoit, who is from St. Albert, about 30 minutes from Ottawa. "It was a big game and we were able to get a win. We have to keep this going now." Benoit was a fan favourite in Ottawa despite playing just 41 games for the Senators over two seasons. He has played in 66 of Colorados 68 games this season and has nine goals in 107 career games. Four of those have come in his last nine games. Chelsea Ladies boss Emma Hayes believes women’s football must grow in this country before there can be a debate about equal pay in the game. The equal pay debate has been brought sharply into focus by the complaint filed by five senior members of the US Womens National Team against their federation for wage discrimination. The US Womens National Team attracted Americas highest football audience in history last year Despite four Olympic titles and three World Cup wins, including last years showpiece which was watched by 23 million people in America - the highest television audience for a football match in US history - the women earn less than half than their male counterparts. FIFA president Gianni Infantino said on Wednesday that the matter is far from straightforward and called for the debate to be taken very seriously. Gianni Infantino wants FIFA to look into how much female footballers get paid. But Hayes - who guided Chelsea Ladies to the league and FA Cup double last season - says commercialisation of the womens game is key before we can have the similar conversations in this country. Its about taking one step at a time, she told Sky Sports News HQ. Chelsea Ladies Special One with the Womens FA Cup trophy at Wembley I think its a conversation that needs to be linked side-by-side with commercialising the womens game and if that happens, and there is growth and there are more revenue streams, Im sure there will be more pay for women in all sports. There has been huge progress post the 2012 Olympic Games. The lasting legacy of that is womens sport and I think we will continue to see more investment but it is step-by step. The important part is womens sport is here to stay and at a club like Chelsea that is very much the case. World Player of the Year Carli Lloyd is one of five US players who have file a wage discrimination complaint We have 22 full-time players here who are thriving and able to represent the club because of the opportunities that have been afforded to us and we are very grateful for that.Last week, Australias female cricketers were handed a pay rise by their board, with seven of those confirmed to take part in this summers inaugural Kia Super League in England. Australia won the Womens Ashes in England last summer New Zealand captain Suzie Bates will also play in the competition this summer but says the womens game must be better promoted in her homeland before female players can seek parity with their male counterparts.I guess we cant really demand too much until weve proven to be a success, she said. Suzie Bates says the womens game must develop before equal pay becomes a reality But I think once the womens game on its own starts attracting crowds and TV numbers then I think we will be able to demand more of that revenue. The more its on TV, and the more its promoted in the media, the more opportunities there are for that.I can see the argument but in New Zealand at the moment we havent done the work to promote the game to increase its profile, but in Australia and in England they have done that really well and they are getting people watching. BOSTON -- No need for instant replay. The umpires overturned this blown call on their own. After Dustin Pedroia was called out on a phantom force play in the first inning of the World Series opener, second base umpire Dana DeMuth was reversed by the other five members of his crew. Three pitches later, Mike Napoli lined a cutter to the gap in left-centre field for a go-ahead three-run double, and the Boston Red Sox coasted to an 8-1 rout over the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night. Nine years after they reversed the Curse, the Red Sox succeeded in reversing a key Series call. "You rarely see that," Napoli said before adding, "especially on a stage like this." Jacoby Ellsbury had walked leading off the first, and Pedroia had singled with one out. David Ortiz followed with a slow bouncer to second baseman Matt Carpenter that had an outside chance of being turned into an inning-ending double play. Carpenter made a routine 30-foot backhand flip to Pete Kozma in plenty of time for the out. But as the shortstop approached second base, the ball bounced off the edge of his gloves webbing and fell to the ground. DeMuth called Pedroia out on a force, indicating the ball was dropped by Kozma while making the transfer to his throwing hand. "It was just one of those plays. He gave me a good feed and I just missed it," Kozma said. Red Sox manager John Farrell jogged out from the dugout out to argue. "I think were fully accepting of the neighbourhood play, but my view is that it wasnt even that," he said. "There was really no entry into the glove with the ball." All six umpires huddled near shortstop for 30 seconds to discuss the play as Farrell looked on from the infield grass. "Typically theyre probably going to stand pat with the decision thats made in the moment," Farrell said. Kozma believed he established sufficient possession. "I had enough," he said. And then crew chief John Hirschbeck then walked toward the Cardinals dugout on the third-base side, motioning with his left hand for Cardinals manager Mike Matheny to come out. He told him that Pedroia was being called safe, and Matheny spent 1 1/2 minutes arguing to no avail, repeatedly jabbing his right index finger in the air. "Thats not a play Ive ever seen before," Matheny said. "And Im pretty sure there were six umpires on the field that had never seen that play before either. Its a pretty tough time to debut that overruled call in the World Series. Now, I get that trying to get the right call. I get that. Tough one to swallow." DeMuth admitted he got it wrong. "I stayed with the foot too long. Thats how I ended up getting in trouble," he said. "And when I was coming up, all I could see was a hand coming out and the ball on the ground. All right? So I was assuming." When he saw his crewmates converging on him, DeMuth knew he had made a mistake. "Its an awful feeling, yeah. Especially when Im sure I have the right call," he said. Hirschbeck said in the end it wasnt a difficult decision for the crew. "When I hear all five of us say we are 100 per cent, then I say, OK, we need to change this. Its as simple as that," he said. Major League Baseball started using video review to assist umpires in 2008, but only to decide whether potential home runs went over fences or were fair balls. Under rules changes likely to be approved for next season, video will be used for virtually every call other than balls and strikes. Managers would be allowed one challenge over the first six innings and two from the seventh inning on. Officials in New York City would make the final ruling. Speaking softly in a corner of the cramped visitors clubhouse, Kozma seemed like a player who felt he had let his team down. "You saw what happened the rest of the night," he said. "If I catch that ball and turn that double play, it stays nothing-nothing." Nadal is already a record eight-time champion with a lifetime 65-1 record at Roland Garros. One more victory on the red clay will make him the first man to win five in a row and give him his 14th Grand Slam title -- tied in second place with Pete Sampras. The top-seeded Spaniard reached the final by beating Wimbledon champion Andy Murray 6-3, 6-2, 6-1 Friday on Court Philippe Chatrier, the stadium Nadal calls his favourite place to play. Djokovic defeated Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first semifinal. Nadal has beaten Djokovic at the French Open in all five of their meetings, starting with a quarterfinal victory in 2006. They also met in the semifinals in 2007, 08 and 13, and in the final in 2012. The second-seeded Djokovic, however, has beaten Nadal the last four times they have played, including on clay in the final in Rome last month. "Im going to try to be aggressive, because that is the only way I can win against him," Djokovic said.dddddddddddd "I know that, of course, this is the court hes most dominant on. He has only lost one time in his career. This is where he plays his best." The winner on Sunday will also be ranked No. 1 on Monday. Nadal is currently at the top, but needs to extend his French Open winning streak to 35 matches to stay there. He certainly played like the No. 1 on Friday. Nadal jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set, then broke early again in the second and third sets. The Spaniard had six break points in the entire match, and converted each one. Murray, meanwhile, couldnt even manage to earn a single break point. Besides his eight titles at the French Open, Nadal has also won twice at Wimbledon, twice at the U.S. Open and once at the Australian Open. Sampras won 14 major titles in his career, but never the French Open. The record holder is Roger Federer with 17 Grand Slam titles. He won his 14th in Paris in 2009, the only French Open in which Nadal lost a match. ' ' '
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- Floyd Mayweather Jr. says hell fight for the last time in September next year. Mayweather told guests at a gala dinner in South Africa on Friday that he remembers his first fight when he was a kid in 1987, and that "September 2015 will be my last." The unbeaten five-division world champion, considered by many the best boxer of his era, said after beating Canelo Alvarez in a dominating display last September that he had four fights and two years left in his career. Mayweathers next bout will be in May against an undecided opponent, having said this week that British fighter Amir Khan and Argentine Marcos Maidana are the leading contenders. Mayweather has a 45-0 record with 26 knockouts and made his pro debut in 1996. Gerrit Cole Jersey . The story goes like this. “Game 5, known as "The Flu Game", was one of Michael Jordans most memorable.San Diego, CA - Back in the postseason for the fifth straight year, the San Diego State Aztecs clash with the Navy Midshipmen in the 10th annual Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. The Aztecs, who call Qualcomm home, had another successful season in the Mountain West Conference, finishing in a tie for first place in the West Division with Fresno State at 5-3. Unfortunately, the team lost the tiebreaker and was left out of the conference championship game (won by Boise State), but still the Aztecs were invited back to take part in the Poinsettia Bowl for the third time since 2010. You can watch the game live on TSN2 at 9:30pm et/6:30pm pt. When it comes to the postseason, the Aztecs own a 6-6 mark in bowl games, but are just 3-5 since moving to the Division I level. Head coach Rocky Long has led SDSU to the postseason in each of his four years with the program and last season the team snapped a two-game slide in bowl games with a 49-24 win over Buffalo in the Famous Potato Bowl in Idaho. Making it to a bowl game yet again is one thing, but to be able to play in front of the hometown crowd is certainly a bonus that is not lost on coach Long. Very few teams are going to a fifth straight bowl game and our players have worked hard to get here, Long says. It shows how successful our program has become. Ive been lucky enough to have gone to several bowls and our fifth- year seniors have been to five straight bowls. The Poinsettia Bowl has been great to us and we know how well they treat us. Our players are excited about being home, so their family and friends can come watch them play. As for the Midshipmen, they have not enjoyed nearly as long of a break since the end of the regular season as San Diego State, but that should not prevent the Academy from putting up a fight two days before Christmas. Navy was just on the field Dec. 13 in the annual battle versus Army in Baltimore, coming away with a 17-10 victory. The team closed the regular season with three straight wins and five in the last six outings overall. Even before the final game of the regular season, Navy was bowl eligible and accepted the invitation back to San Diego where the branch of the armed forces has a heavy presence already. We are excited about the opportunity to travel to San Diego, which is a city filled with Navy and Marine Corps service men and women, and play in a first- class bowl game, notes Navys Director of Athletics, Chet Gladchuk. The city of San Diego, the stadium, the hospitality from the community and the bowl administration present as fine a postseason experience as we could possibly enjoy. The Midshipmen are playing in a bowl game for the third straight year and 20th time in history overall, having taken part in the 1924 Rose Bowl versus Washington and tying the Huskies, 14-14. The program defeated Middle Tennessee in the Armed Forces Bowl following last season, 24-6, but still Navy has won just two times in the last seven bowl appearances. Overall, the squad has a mark of 8-10-1 in the postseason. The Aztecs lead the all-time series by a 3-0 margin, with all three of those contests bbeing played in southern California.dddddddddddd The most recent meeting was a 35-14 victory in this very same bowl game back in 2010. Another positive note for San Diego State has the team winning eight straight meetings against service academies. When it comes to the Navy offense these days, it begins and ends with the exploits of quarterback Keenan Reynolds. The signal caller has operated the triple-option to perfection during his career, but especially this season as he has scored what is not only a school-record 31 rushing touchdowns, that total is also the most for any quarterback in NCAA history in a single season as well. He is just the fourth player in NCAA history to rush for at least 30 and his 62 career rushing TDs are the most by any quarterback in NCAA history as well. But the nations top rushing offense (345.1 ypg) does have other options at their disposal, which is something the San Diego State defense will have to keep in mind when they start to crowd the box in attempt to slow down Reynolds and his cohorts. Averaging 7.6 yards per carry, Noah Copeland accounted for 889 yards and five TDs in 12 regular-season games, while Chris Swain posted four TDs and 621 yards of his own. The Aztecs will have to be careful when they dig into the trenches on defense because Reynolds has shown that he can put the ball in the air as well, obviously not as often as every other team in the FBS, but enough so that opponents need to take notice. Reynolds has averaged just over 10 attempts per game and has completed passes for 826 yards and six touchdowns, three of those going to Jamir Tillman. Unfortunately, the defense for the Midshipman is not as strong as it could be, giving up 410.3 ypg to rank 78th in the nation entering bowl season. The team has had considerable issues slowing down the run as they give up close to 200 ypg, but if the Navy offense is controlling the clock that might not be as much of an issue. As for the San Diego State offense, it mostly revolves around running back Donnel Pumphrey, a 2014 First-Team All-Mountain West performer who is one of the nations top rushers with 146.2 ypg. A workhorse who has carried the ball 255 times this season, Pumphrey eclipsed the 100-yard mark in nine games, posting a high of 267 as he averaged close to seven yards per attempt and scored 19 of his teams 25 rushing touchdowns. Another decent option to turn to is Chase Price, who finished the regular season with 605 yards and five scores. Handing the ball off to Pumphrey will be Quinn Kaehler, a signal caller who has unfortunately thrown more interceptions (10) than touchdowns (9) while completing 56.4 percent of his attempts. Despite missing five games, the target that Kaehler will be seeking out most of all will probably be Ezell Ruffin who led the program with 26 catches, leading to 422 yards and a couple of scores. On the defensive side of the ball, Calvin Munson should draw considerable attention from Navy as he tied for the team high with 78 tackles, logged 10.5 tackles for loss, four sacks and paced the Aztecs with four interceptions during the season. Danny Wright: Just to break the ice, because of our namesake we like to ask everyone who comes in – can you go BarDown?Clint Malarchuk: Yes I can… yes I can.DW: Was goaltender the position you always wanted to play?CM: Yes. My dad was a goalie and so was my brother, whos seven years older. When we would go to the rink to watch my brother play, the seven year gap was like, yknow, thats big brother out there. It was definitely what I wanted to play. They kind of held me back out of goal until I could learn to skate, because they said that was important. So I played forward and defense when I was really young. I think I started playing goal when I was nine.DW: Is it true your farm is called ‘Canuck Ranch?CM: Yes, yes it is. A lot of people when they come in – we have a big sign that says Canuck Ranch – they dont know what a Canuck is. Its like a Yankee in the states, its just a slang term, and they go “oh we get it.” Its our slang for Yankee, yknow, Canadian.DW: Youve been known to be passionate about both hockey and horses - where did your love of horses begin?CM: Grande Prairie, Alberta. I had a cousin who married into a ranching family, just a huge family that had 500 head of cattle, diary, and pigs. Thats where I got the love of the horse.DW: If you could compare yourself to one athlete, past or present, in the way you prepared yourself and the work ethic you had, which athlete would you choose?CM: Ill say Willie de Wit. Hes from Grande Prairie! He was a silver medalist in the Olympics in boxing.DW: Probably the most violent incident hockey has ever seen, in 1989 during a game a skate blade slashed your carotid artery – is it fair to say Jim Pizzutelli, the Buffalo Sabres trainer, saved your life that day?CM: Yes, thats a fair statement. I think more because he was so calm. A lot of people are trained for trauma, but theres not preparation for trauma when its under the gun and youve got minutes between life and death. He was a Vietnam vet so hed seen some crap, so for him to be that calm probably saved my life. #502546465 / gettyimages.com DW: Theres an interview with you on YouTube a few weeks after the accident where youre saying how anxious you were to get back on the ice; do you regret returning to the NHL as fast as you did?CM: No, I think the longer you wait the harder it gets. I think your personality dictates that too. I know [Richard] Zednik took a lot longer than I did, but everybodys different. For me it was the right thing to do. My only regret is later on I found how much it affected me mentally, and counseling or some sort of therapy probably would have helped me. #85708975 / gettyimages.com DW: Youve obviously been through a lot in your life, how difficult was it to recount those certain moments, and relive them in a way, while writing the book?CM: It was awful. Going through it again… it was a very difficult project. Someone just asked me this morning if talking about it or reliving it again was hard, and I knew when I was finishing the book; the last day of editing I was talking to Dan Robson my writer, and I was in the barn and just started crying. I was just thanking god that everything was done. And now this part is actually fun. The book is done, what I said is in it and I cant change it. Actually talking about it is not nearly as tough, this is kind of fun now.DW: Do you think the NHL is doing enough to help players when in comes to the issue of mental health and mental illness?CM: I dont think its the NHL, I think its society in general that has to do more about mental health awareness. Bell is probably the biggest corporation doing the most with mental health. The program Lets Talk nationwide is extensive and high profile, with high profile people involved. Its really what we need. To me theyre [Bell] at the forefront leading what everybody else has to pick up on. The NHL, NFL, NBA and even including corporations worldwide need to pick up on this. The statistics are unbelievable on days lost in the workforce due to mental health reasons. If corporations looked at those numbers, theyd figure out they need to do something here. Its a win-win if we get going on this. Its no different than physical health, if youve got cancer or a medical problem where youre going to miss work you would tell your boss. If you have a mental health problem you dont go to your boss. But if the company saw those numbers they would say, “hey, if you have problems like that, just come to us, its totally confidential, and well get you some help” because lets face it business is about money. Having people out of work is probably losing companies money. If there can be preventative medicine, they would do it. #56673885 / gettyimages.com DW: It takes a lot of courage to write a book like ‘The Crazy Game, and I think its going to help a lot of people - is there any final words you want to give readers before they open the book?CM: The feedback that Ive had so far, I mean, the book is out in bookstores today, but the media has had advance copies and the feedback tells me its very open, honest and raw. Talk about BarDown, this is bare down. Be prepared. There are parts that youre going to read in the book and youre going to think I was probably a jerk. I was acting like one for sure, but that was part of the illness. I would just say be prepared for some real honest, and its a little bit raw. Air Force 1 Alte Special Field . Air Force 1 Alte Graphic .com) - Will Conant booted a 39-yard field goal as time expired and Air Force played spoiler with a 27-24 win over 21st- ranked Colorado State on Friday. We are hearing the possibility that Martin St. Louis and Ryan Kesler have demanded to be traded. In the case of St. Louis, not much of an effort has been made to deny reports of a trade request. Now both players have no-trade clauses in their contracts - and the wisdom of granting a player a no-trade has long been debated. Ultimately, its a very risky move since the only certainty with athletes is uncertainty. They can go down at any time, see a significant drop in their production or relationships can sour. As well, player production aside, a team may see an opportunity to improve its team by way of trade, but cant close on the deal because a player has a no-trade. Some players, however, insist on the provision being included in their contracts on the basis that they dont want to leave. The player and his family are committed to the team and the city. In certain circumstances, teams will agree to it. With a no-trade clause, the team bears the risk. Its one-sided and may potentially cause long-term damage to a team. This is particularly the case in a salary cap world, where return on investment is critical and a failure to achieve may be fatal to a teams likelihood of success. The risk is amplified when a player with a no-trade demands a trade. As a result of having a no-trade, the player decides where he goes. Since his contract provides he cant be traded (despite ironically demanding a trade), the player is in complete control. As a result, the team foorfeits significant leverage in seeking a fair return on the player.dddddddddddd By way of example, if its known that St. Louis will only go to the Rangers, then there is no good reason for the Rangers to offer up an equal return. General managers rely on multiple teams bidding on a player to drive up the return. However, if a player says that of the four teams interested, he wont go to three, the teams hands are tied and its potential return is instantly undermined. Can that risk be mitigated? Yes. Give the player the no-trade clause he so deeply desires. However, include a trigger in the contract that provides that in the event the player demands a trade, he agrees to be traded to any team on a previously negotiated list of teams. That could, for example, be a list of 10 teams. That list was negotiated while the deal was being worked out - and is part of the contract. Lets be clear: the no-trade wouldnt be null and void. Rather, the no-trade would now qualified by the mutually-accepted list of teams. The sides negotiated the deal and the terms of the contract govern the relationship. If a provision is no longer convenient for either side, thats life. NHL player contracts dont account for irony. By structuring the contract this way, the player gets the assurance he wont be moved, while the team is able to better manage its risk. Otherwise absolute no-trade clauses tie the hands of teams and make it a real challenge to get a proper return on a player. ' ' '

MOSCOW -- Vladislav Tretiak has won a contest between two Russian ice hockey greats to be re-elected as president of the national federation. Soviet-era goaltender Tretiak, who is close to the countrys influential Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko, defeated Viacheslav Fetisov by 125 votes to 11 at the federation conference on Wednesday. Tretiak wins a third consecutive four-year term in a position he has held since 2006, despite the federation coming in for criticism after Russias defeat in the quarterfinals of the Sochi Olympics. He is a longtime proponent of allowing fewer foreign players at Russian clubs so that local prospects get more ice time. Fetisov, a multiple Olympic, world, and Stanley Cup champion defenceman, has accused Tretiak of allowing Russias youth hockey development to wither, and backed a more liberal approach to foreign players to help clubs compete internationally. Machidas five-round win over Mousasi served as the main event of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi" event, in Jaragua do Su, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Machida, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, was the faster fighter from the start, darting in and out of range while delivering rapid-fire punches and a few impressive high kicks. The patient Mousasi began to increase his pressure as the fight wore on, but he struggled to pin down the elusive Machida and consistently found it impossible to hit the target. Mousasi was never out of the fight, and his power punches left him as a danger through all 25 minutes of the bout, but Machida simply proved to be a little too fast and too tricky, and was awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45. "I always want to score a knockout or a submission," Machida said after the win. "Mousasi is a hard fighter, and every detail makes difference. Im already thinking about the belt, but this is something UFC has to decide." In the nights co-feature, Brazilian submission ace Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (20-3) won his third consecutive UFC fight with an impressive decision win over Francis Carmont (22-8), a transplanted Frenchman who trains at Montreals Tristar Gym. Souza, a former Strikeforce champion who now has his eye on UFC gold, controlled the action from the start, taking the fight to the floor and keeping the superior position throughout much of the 15-minute fight. Carmont displayed ample defensive skills, shrugging off multiple submission attempts in hopes of mounting a counterattack. However, he was never able to shake free and find the space he needed to operate, and Souza cruised to the decision win. Afterward, the top-ranked Souza called for a title shot but insisted hell keep knocking off fellow contenders if necessary to get there. "I want the champ," Souza said through a translator. "I want whoever has the belt. And if the UFC doesnt think Im ready for that, just put anyone ahead of me and Ill get over them." In additional main-card action, Brazilian welterweight Erick Silva (16-4) made quick work of late replacement Takenori Sato (17-9-7).dddddddddddd The 29-year-old Silva needed just 52 seconds to dispatch of his overmatched opponent, stopping an early takedown and then unloading a barrage of massive punches as Sato refused to let go of a single-leg attempt. Silva, long considered a top prospect at 170 pounds, said his surprising loss to Dong Hyun Kim this past October served as motivation for the spectacular performance. "I needed a win, but at no point did I feel pressured," Silva said. "Losing my last fight served as motivation, not as pressure. I trained very hard, and it was the best camp of my life. I was the first to arrive in the gym and the last one to leave. "I was very hungry for the win. The result couldnt have been different." Brazilian welterweight Viscardi Andrade nearly earned a first-round knockout win over Swedish fighter Nicholas Musoke (12-2). Instead, he left the octagon with a loss by decision. In the first round, Andrade delivered a crushing right hand that sent Musoke to the floor. But Andrade celebrated too soon, raising his hands in the air rather than pushing forward to seal the result. Musoke somehow recovered from the thunderous blow and seized momentum back for the rest of the contest, using technical striking and superior grappling to claims rounds two and three on the judges scorecards and taking home a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards. "Its never the plan to get hit that hard in the beginning," Musoke said. "All in all, happy with the win, but not at all with my performance, especially with the way the fight started. I knew hed come out hard, although I did think Id be able to avoid his punches a bit better." In the nights first main-card contest, Brazilian featherweight Charles Oliveira earned a third-round submission win over Englishman Andy Ogle. At the evenings post-event news conference, Machida and Mousasi were each awarded $50,000 for the evenings "Fight of the Night" bonus. Meanwhile, Silva and Oliveira each earned $50,000 bonuses in the UFCs new "Performance Bonus" awards, which replace the long-customary "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night" awards. BALTIMORE - The New England Patriots put on a performance worthy of a division winner. Making it even sweeter was that it came at the expense of the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, who bounced New England from the post-season last season. Logan Ryan had two interceptions, LeGarrette Blount scored twice and the playoff-bound Patriots breezed to a 41-7 victory Sunday, ending the Ravens four-game winning streak and diminishing their post-season hopes. The previous time these two teams met, the AFC title hung in the balance and Baltimore used a strong second half to pull out a 28-13 victory. In this one, New England took a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter and never let up behind a defence that forced four turnovers and had four sacks. The Patriots (11-4) were assured their fifth straight AFC East title before the game started when Miami lost at Buffalo. Its the 11th division crown for New England coach Bill Belichick, tied with Don Shula for most since the 1970 merger. "Happy to win the AFC East," Belichick said. "Hopefully, we can build off this game." Tom Brady completed 14 of 26 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. He has led his team to 11 division titles, two more than any other starting quarterback in NFL history. "Theyre all special. Its hard to come by, and this teams really fought hard all year," Brady said. "Weve earned it. Eleven wins in the NFLs not easy, and to win a division titles not easy." The loss eliminated the Ravens (8-7) from contention in the AFC North and dropped them into a tie with Miami and San Diego for the final AFC wild-card slot. Baltimore closes the regular season at Cincinnati, which displaced the Ravens as division champs. "We got to go in there and win. That was going to be the case no matter what," said Harbaugh, who is in danger of missing the post-season for the first time in his six seasons with Baltimore. It was the Ravens most lopsided loss since a 37-0 defeat at Pittsburgh in 1997. Things went so bad for Baltimore that Justin Tuckers run of 33 straight field goals ended when he went wide left on a 37-yarder with 14:19 remaining. Joe Flacco went 22 for 38 for 260 yards and two interceptions for the Ravens, who fell to 6-2 at home. Wearing a brace on his left knee after being injured last week in Detroit, Flacco had difficulty escaping the unyielding pressure applied by New Englands defensive front. "I dont think he played well," Harbaugh said. Refusing to use the brace as an excuse, Flacco said, "I would have liked to play better. The brace had nothing to do with anything." Baltimore trailed 20-0 late in the third quarter when Ray Rice was stuffed for no gain on a fourth-and-1 at the New England 4. That effectively ended any chance of a comeback. The Ravens scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Flacco with 9:21 left, enabling Baltimore to avoid its first shutout loss since 2002, against Tampa Bay. It was of very little consolation to the defending champs. "Its a tough pill to swallow," safety James Ihedigbo said. "Definitely a frustrating loss." New England scored on a 7-yard run by Blount with 2:05 to go to make it 27-7, then added another touchdown when an errant snap eluded Ravens backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Chandler Jones recovered the ball in the end zone. Tavon Wilson capped the scoring with a 74-yard interception return with 40 seconds remaining. Baltimores previous three games were decided by three points or fewer, but it became evident early that this one would not be close. New England went up 7-0 on its second possession. A 34-yard pass interference penalty against Jimmy Smith put the ball at the Baltimore 1 before Blount bulled into the end zone. Three plays later, Flacco threw into double coverage and was intercepted by Ryan at the New England 47. After completing a 34-yard pass to Danny Amendola, Brady connected with Shane Vereen for a 4-yard score. The Patriots quickly got the ball back, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 45-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to make it 17-0. Shortly after halftime, the Ravens went for it on fourth-and-3 at the New England 39 and Flacco threw an incomplete pass. Baltimores next possession ended with Ryans second interception of the game and fifth of the season. Seven plays later, Gostkowski kicked a 42-yard field goal. Flacco tried to rally the Ravens, but after a 42-yard completion to Torrey Smith produced a first down at the New England 13, he couldnt get into the end zone. Notes: New England DB Devin McCourty left with a head injury, and Vereen left with a groin injury. ... Tuckers miss was his first since Week 2. ... Baltimore finished with more yardage, 358-300.
