Battle was chosen as the top linebacker by voters taking part in the Winnipeg Free Press/TSN 1290 All-Time Bombers Team selection process. “Really? That’s awesome. That’s quite a list of guys and I was honoured just be on it,” said Battle, when reached Friday afternoon. “The guys I played with were all special and had unique talents. Playing with them was the highlight of my career.” With a brilliant list of candidates; Battle, Tyrone Jones, James West, Paul Randolph and Phil Minnick the voting was very tight. Battle led heading into Friday’s final hours of voting but Jones and West supporters pushed very hard late into the afternoon to try and get their men over the top. But Battle, the CFL’s top defensive player in 1990 and 1991 and the Bombers all-time leader in tackles and fumble returns, won out. Battle was instrumental in two Grey Cup wins for the Bombers in 1988 and 1990. MOSCOW -- Vladislav Tretiak has won a contest between two Russian ice hockey greats to be re-elected as president of the national federation. Soviet-era goaltender Tretiak, who is close to the countrys influential Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko, defeated Viacheslav Fetisov by 125 votes to 11 at the federation conference on Wednesday. Tretiak wins a third consecutive four-year term in a position he has held since 2006, despite the federation coming in for criticism after Russias defeat in the quarterfinals of the Sochi Olympics. He is a longtime proponent of allowing fewer foreign players at Russian clubs so that local prospects get more ice time. Fetisov, a multiple Olympic, world, and Stanley Cup champion defenceman, has accused Tretiak of allowing Russias youth hockey development to wither, and backed a more liberal approach to foreign players to help clubs compete internationally. Machidas five-round win over Mousasi served as the main event of Saturdays "UFC Fight Night: Machida vs. Mousasi" event, in Jaragua do Su, Santa Catarina, Brazil. Machida, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, was the faster fighter from the start, darting in and out of range while delivering rapid-fire punches and a few impressive high kicks. The patient Mousasi began to increase his pressure as the fight wore on, but he struggled to pin down the elusive Machida and consistently found it impossible to hit the target. Mousasi was never out of the fight, and his power punches left him as a danger through all 25 minutes of the bout, but Machida simply proved to be a little too fast and too tricky, and was awarded a unanimous-decision win with scores of 49-46, 50-45 and 50-45. "I always want to score a knockout or a submission," Machida said after the win. "Mousasi is a hard fighter, and every detail makes difference. Im already thinking about the belt, but this is something UFC has to decide." In the nights co-feature, Brazilian submission ace Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza (20-3) won his third consecutive UFC fight with an impressive decision win over Francis Carmont (22-8), a transplanted Frenchman who trains at Montreals Tristar Gym. Souza, a former Strikeforce champion who now has his eye on UFC gold, controlled the action from the start, taking the fight to the floor and keeping the superior position throughout much of the 15-minute fight. Carmont displayed ample defensive skills, shrugging off multiple submission attempts in hopes of mounting a counterattack. However, he was never able to shake free and find the space he needed to operate, and Souza cruised to the decision win. Afterward, the top-ranked Souza called for a title shot but insisted hell keep knocking off fellow contenders if necessary to get there. "I want the champ," Souza said through a translator. "I want whoever has the belt. And if the UFC doesnt think Im ready for that, just put anyone ahead of me and Ill get over them." In additional main-card action, Brazilian welterweight Erick Silva (16-4) made quick work of late replacement Takenori Sato (17-9-7).dddddddddddd The 29-year-old Silva needed just 52 seconds to dispatch of his overmatched opponent, stopping an early takedown and then unloading a barrage of massive punches as Sato refused to let go of a single-leg attempt. Silva, long considered a top prospect at 170 pounds, said his surprising loss to Dong Hyun Kim this past October served as motivation for the spectacular performance. "I needed a win, but at no point did I feel pressured," Silva said. "Losing my last fight served as motivation, not as pressure. I trained very hard, and it was the best camp of my life. I was the first to arrive in the gym and the last one to leave. "I was very hungry for the win. The result couldnt have been different." Brazilian welterweight Viscardi Andrade nearly earned a first-round knockout win over Swedish fighter Nicholas Musoke (12-2). Instead, he left the octagon with a loss by decision. In the first round, Andrade delivered a crushing right hand that sent Musoke to the floor. But Andrade celebrated too soon, raising his hands in the air rather than pushing forward to seal the result. Musoke somehow recovered from the thunderous blow and seized momentum back for the rest of the contest, using technical striking and superior grappling to claims rounds two and three on the judges scorecards and taking home a unanimous decision, 29-28 on all three cards. "Its never the plan to get hit that hard in the beginning," Musoke said. "All in all, happy with the win, but not at all with my performance, especially with the way the fight started. I knew hed come out hard, although I did think Id be able to avoid his punches a bit better." In the nights first main-card contest, Brazilian featherweight Charles Oliveira earned a third-round submission win over Englishman Andy Ogle. At the evenings post-event news conference, Machida and Mousasi were each awarded $50,000 for the evenings "Fight of the Night" bonus. Meanwhile, Silva and Oliveira each earned $50,000 bonuses in the UFCs new "Performance Bonus" awards, which replace the long-customary "Knockout of the Night" and "Submission of the Night" awards. BALTIMORE - The New England Patriots put on a performance worthy of a division winner. Making it even sweeter was that it came at the expense of the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, who bounced New England from the post-season last season. Logan Ryan had two interceptions, LeGarrette Blount scored twice and the playoff-bound Patriots breezed to a 41-7 victory Sunday, ending the Ravens four-game winning streak and diminishing their post-season hopes. The previous time these two teams met, the AFC title hung in the balance and Baltimore used a strong second half to pull out a 28-13 victory. In this one, New England took a 17-0 lead early in the second quarter and never let up behind a defence that forced four turnovers and had four sacks. The Patriots (11-4) were assured their fifth straight AFC East title before the game started when Miami lost at Buffalo. Its the 11th division crown for New England coach Bill Belichick, tied with Don Shula for most since the 1970 merger. "Happy to win the AFC East," Belichick said. "Hopefully, we can build off this game." Tom Brady completed 14 of 26 passes for 172 yards and a touchdown. He has led his team to 11 division titles, two more than any other starting quarterback in NFL history. "Theyre all special. Its hard to come by, and this teams really fought hard all year," Brady said. "Weve earned it. Eleven wins in the NFLs not easy, and to win a division titles not easy." The loss eliminated the Ravens (8-7) from contention in the AFC North and dropped them into a tie with Miami and San Diego for the final AFC wild-card slot. Baltimore closes the regular season at Cincinnati, which displaced the Ravens as division champs. "We got to go in there and win. That was going to be the case no matter what," said Harbaugh, who is in danger of missing the post-season for the first time in his six seasons with Baltimore. It was the Ravens most lopsided loss since a 37-0 defeat at Pittsburgh in 1997. Things went so bad for Baltimore that Justin Tuckers run of 33 straight field goals ended when he went wide left on a 37-yarder with 14:19 remaining. Joe Flacco went 22 for 38 for 260 yards and two interceptions for the Ravens, who fell to 6-2 at home. Wearing a brace on his left knee after being injured last week in Detroit, Flacco had difficulty escaping the unyielding pressure applied by New Englands defensive front. "I dont think he played well," Harbaugh said. Refusing to use the brace as an excuse, Flacco said, "I would have liked to play better. The brace had nothing to do with anything." Baltimore trailed 20-0 late in the third quarter when Ray Rice was stuffed for no gain on a fourth-and-1 at the New England 4. That effectively ended any chance of a comeback. The Ravens scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Flacco with 9:21 left, enabling Baltimore to avoid its first shutout loss since 2002, against Tampa Bay. It was of very little consolation to the defending champs. "Its a tough pill to swallow," safety James Ihedigbo said. "Definitely a frustrating loss." New England scored on a 7-yard run by Blount with 2:05 to go to make it 27-7, then added another touchdown when an errant snap eluded Ravens backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor and Chandler Jones recovered the ball in the end zone. Tavon Wilson capped the scoring with a 74-yard interception return with 40 seconds remaining. Baltimores previous three games were decided by three points or fewer, but it became evident early that this one would not be close. New England went up 7-0 on its second possession. A 34-yard pass interference penalty against Jimmy Smith put the ball at the Baltimore 1 before Blount bulled into the end zone. Three plays later, Flacco threw into double coverage and was intercepted by Ryan at the New England 47. After completing a 34-yard pass to Danny Amendola, Brady connected with Shane Vereen for a 4-yard score. The Patriots quickly got the ball back, and Stephen Gostkowski kicked a 45-yard field goal on the first play of the second quarter to make it 17-0. Shortly after halftime, the Ravens went for it on fourth-and-3 at the New England 39 and Flacco threw an incomplete pass. Baltimores next possession ended with Ryans second interception of the game and fifth of the season. Seven plays later, Gostkowski kicked a 42-yard field goal. Flacco tried to rally the Ravens, but after a 42-yard completion to Torrey Smith produced a first down at the New England 13, he couldnt get into the end zone. Hours after Dallas was defeated in Green Bay, the player at the centre of that games most memorable sequence spoke for millions of other football followers than just the Cowboys and their frustrated fans.We lost and I accept it, wide receiver Dez Bryant tweeted, but please change that rule. His leaping 31-yard reception on fourth down landed at the 1 in the waning minutes, but the call was overturned by a Packers challenge and Green Bay took a 26-21 victory to the NFC championship game.Dallas had many other opportunities to win and the rule was widely deemed to be interpreted correctly, so the latest NFL controversy wasnt about a team getting a raw deal from the refs.Rather, this was the conundrum: a spectacular catch that passed the eye test for most people watching, but failed to satisfy the leagues complex rule book. The spotlight Sunday fell on Rule 8, Section 1, Article 3, Item 1:If a player goes to the ground in the act of catching a pass (with or without contact by an opponent), he must maintain control of the ball throughout the process of contacting the ground, whether in the field of play or the end zone. If he loses control of the ball, and the ball touches the ground before he regains control, the pass is incomplete. If he regains control prior to the ball touching the ground, the pass is complete. The biggest beef raised by Bryant and the Cowboys was that the ball only came loose when it hit the ground near the pylon. He had full possession as he took his stumbling steps toward the goal line, but because by definition he was considered to still be falling then that didnt count toward completion of the catch. The rule was put in place to make such calls easier for officials on the field. The leagues vice-president of officiating, Dean Blandino, said Sunday that Bryants football move of stretching his arm toward the goal line was not obvious enough. If we make this a catch, then where do we draw the line with a lot of other plays where its clearly incomplete by rule? Blandino said on the NFL Network. It can be become even more inconsistent.Since this happened at such a pivotal point of such an important game, strict parameters will likely stay in first place on the publics list of gripes for a while. There are worthy competitors for the most rued rule, though:— Excessive celebration.New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Grahams signature crossbar slam dunk in the back of the end zone was the most recent creative act to land on the no-no list. Entertainment is what pulls so many millions of people into these games each Sunday during the season, and the NFLs various attempts to limit on-field flamboyance following touchdowns or even sacks have triggered many a complaint. The derisive No Fun League nickname rose out of this eye-rolling exasperation decades ago.— Defensive pass interference. The NCAAs punishment is 15 yards, but the NFL puts the ball at the spot of the foul, even if that happens to be inches from the end zone after a 40 or 50-yard penalty. Without replay reviews allowed in these cases and much contention about whats allowable for down-field contact and whats not, the pass interference flag is perhaps the most debated in the sport. So theres no worse feeling for the offending team, or its fans, to see the opponent get first and goal with disagreement with the call in the first place.— Tackling.Everyone is for player safety, of course, and the frightening amount of post-career health problems in this violent game have prompted the league to tighten standards for pressuring the quarterback, bringing down the ball carrier and covering the receiver. With the crackdown on hard hits, especially those to and with the head, has come confusion from defensive players in recent years about what theyre allowed to do to keep the offence from beating them. Slowing by a half-step in this ultra-fast sport to make sure a tackle or a hit is legal will inevitably lead to a whiff and a long gain. There are always contrarians to the consensus, of course.NFL analyst Cris Carter, the Pro Football Hall of Fame wide receiver, said Monday on ESPN radio that hes a strong proponent of the process-of-catch rule.It really helps clear it up, Carter said. Hand the ball to the referee.Rules that might have outlived their usefulness or become unnecessarily unwieldy to most were once installed for legitimate reasons. In 2010, a few weeks after a controversial incompletion that went against Calvin Johnson and the Detroit Lions, a similar non-catch to Bryants, NFL competition committee co-chairman Rich McKay acknowledged the difficulty of the rule.It was made for on-field officials, McKay said, not as much for people watching on TV.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFLQuinton Howden Jersey .com) - A chant of Zeke reverberated around AT&T Stadium before Ezekiel Elliott powered into the end zone for his fourth and final touchdown. Christian Horner has clarified he was just joking when he predicted to reporters that Sebastian Vettel could quit Ferrari to join Mercedes. The Red Bull boss mentored Vettel to his four world championships before the German decided to leave Red Bull for Ferrari two years ago.But after being quoted by Bild suggesting that Vettel may look to leave the Scuderia after a disappointing start to 2016, Horner has insisted his remarks shouldnt have caused such a stir. We had a dinner with some German journalists a week or two ago and just as a wind-up I threw it in there. Suddenly they write about it and it becomes a sensational story, Horner told Sky Sports F1. According to reports in Italy, Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne, who has repeatedly demanded the team quickly return to the winners enclosure and described their decade-long title drought as a tragedy, has conducted a series of inquests at the teams Maranello base in recent weeks in order to understand their on-track struggles. With pressure mounting, team boss Maurizio Arrivabene has admitted the team cannot fail at this weeks Hungarian GP. Hungarian GP on Sky When is the race and how can you watch it? Despite the F1 careers of Hamilton and Vettel, both of whom joined the sport in 2007, running concurrently, the only time they came close to co-existing within the same team was in 2011 when Hamilton enquired about a vacancy at the then-dominant Red Bull outfit. Ironically, it was Horner who closed the door on the switch, adamant that the pair couldnt live together under one roof.At the time it would have been impossible to accommodate Lewis and Sebastian in the team, and obviously we went on to achieve a huge amount with Seb, said Horner in March. The timing didnt work out. It was one of those things. Lewis has gone on to achieve some phenomenal things in another environment. Hes found his way.Id be amazed to ever see the two of them sitting in the same team. From a team point of view as well it would be very difficult to envisage that scenario. It could be very, very divisive. He couldnt help it: The NBAs first openly gay player was surrounded by a throng of cameras and microphones, and at least for the next week or so, Collins will be the face of the Nets wherever they go. The 7-footer was signed to a 10-day contract on Sunday. He played in a 108-102 victory over the Lakers that night, with two rebounds, five fouls and a steal in just under 11 minutes. Before Wednesday nights game against the Trail Blazers, Collins said he accepted the both the interest and scrutiny that has come with his return to the league. "Im back playing basketball, so of course Im enjoying this," he said. Collins quietly played seven minutes in the 124-80 loss to the Blazers on Wednesday night, entering after Nets coach Jason Kidd had pulled his starters in the fourth quarter and many of the fans had already headed for the exits. He attempted one field goal. After Portland, the Nets visit Denver, where the attention will become even more intense. The family of slain Wyoming college student Matthew Shepard is expected to make the drive for the game Thursday night against the Nuggets. Shepard was tortured and murdered in 1998 because he was gay. Collins wears his No. 98 jersey in Shepards honour. He wants to keep the details of any meeting with Judy Shepard to himself. "Obviously, its extremely special and Im very much looking forward to meeting them," he said. Collins wore the No. 98 with both the Boston Celtics and the Washington Wizards for Shepard even before coming out. The jersey wasnt yet ready for the game against the LLakers (he wore a spare jersey with his name hastily added), but he wore No.dddddddddddd 98 against the Blazers. "We were very touched," Judy Shepard told the New York Daily News about the jersey. "For him to make that tribute to Matt was meaningful to us." The jersey was already the biggest seller of the day Tuesday on NBAStore.com, and the NBA said it was selling well again Wednesday. The league didnt provide the number of jerseys sold. For all the attention hes getting, Collins is not a distraction for the Nets, who are in sixth place in the Eastern Conference, inside the playoff cutoff. "He understands how to play the game the right way, and we saw that in L.A.," Kidd said. Collins publicly announced he was gay last May, and he joins several other athletes to come out, including Robbie Roberts of Major League Soccers Los Angeles Galaxy, Brittney Griner of the WNBAs Phoenix Mercury, and NFL draft hopeful Michael Sam, an All-American defensive end who played at Missouri. Since coming out, Collins has become an advocate for LGBT rights. He was in Portland just last week, appearing before a group thats advocating to get a measure on the November ballot that would legalize gay marriage on Oregon. In 2004, voters passed a measure that amended the state constitution to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman. Campaign organizers hope to make Oregon the first state to overturn a constitutional amendment that bans gay marriage. Collins said for now, however, he just wants to focus on the Nets. "There are only so many ways you can write the story or tell the story," he said, "and then it will just be about basketball." ' ' '
Rolando McClains comeback attempt was short-lived. The enigmatic linebacker, who was activated off the reserve-retired list by the Baltimore Ravens last week, has decided to retire for good, according to a report from ESPN. “I gotta follow my heart. It aint football. If football made me complete I would play. But whenever I think of it my heart pulls me away from whatever reason. ... This means Im done,” McClain texted ESPN.com Monday. McClain had a turbulent start to his comeback attempt, arriving late for a workout with the Ravens earlier last week before failing to complete conditioning tests, according to reports. A top 10 pick by the Oakland Raiders in the 2010 NFL Draft, McClain was widely considered a bust during his time with the team. The Raiders released the Alabama product after three seasons and three arrests in an 11-month span. The Ravens signed McClain to a low risk contract prior to last season, when he retired for the first time. Vapormax Plus Sunset . Not that Durant cared. Much has been made of the Oklahoma City defensive stars absence in the first two games of the Western Conference finals series against the San Antonio Spurs. The 6-foot-10 power forward strained his left calf in the previous playoff series, and the Thunder said they expected him to be out for the playoffs. The team changed course Friday and declared him day-to-day. He worked out Saturday, but he didnt practice before addressing the media for the first time since his outlook changed. With Ibaka, the leagues leading shot blocker, the Thunder were one of the best defensive teams the NBA. Without him, the Spurs shot at least 50 per cent in the first two games of the Western Conference Finals and won them by a combined 52 points. As he stood for the five-minute session wearing a black compression sock over the calf, he deflected claims that he could be a saviour heading into Game 3 on Sunday. "Ive been hearing a lot of people saying my team lost two games because I was out," he said. "Thats not true. I believe in my guys. I believe in my teammates. They can be better with me or without me. Its no excuse because Serge Ibaka was not there. Just San Antonio, the first two games, they played better basketball." Ibaka said he sometimes screamed at his television set when he watched scenarios in which he could have made plays during the losses. He is not sure if he will play in Game 3 -- he said it is up to doctors, and much will depend on how he feels in the morning. For now, he will depend largely on rest, ice and luck. His presence is needed, even if he is less than fully healthy. Kendrick Perkins, Nick Collison and Perry Jones have struggled against the Spurs big men. Kevin Durant, normally a small forward, has played some power forward in the series because of Ibakas absence, and his relative lack of physical strength and unfamiliarity with playing post defence has been exploited. The Spurs prepared all along as though he would return. "It gives them another hell of a player," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said, "but we are who we are and weve got to be who we are. We cant change what we do." Even if Ibaka returns, it will not fully solve Oklahoma Citys problems defending the perimeter. San Antonio has made 18 of 40 3-pointers in the series and guards Tony Parker annd Manu Ginobili are slashing into the paint with stunning frequency, often scoring or finding their teammates for open shots.dddddddddddd. The Thunder say it starts with basics. "Its just an individual effort," Perkins said. "Got to put it in your mind that you want to stop the guy in front of you, and thats it. Backside got to be ready. But the thing is when they penetrate, thats what opens those threes. Well do a better job of keeping the ball in front of us, but weve just got to be individual and youve got to want the match up." To be fair, San Antonio shares the ball like no one else. The Spurs led the league with 25.4 assists per game during the regular season. That average is up to 27.5 against Oklahoma City. Parker and Ginobili generate many of the assists, but many others come from simple ball movement. "We dont have a Durant," Ginobili said. "We dont have a Kobe (Bryant) or LeBron (James) that can go one against one and finish every single time. We need to pass the ball to find open teammates, and thats what we do, and thats what weve been doing. We all feel proud about it. We know when we have 25 assists or 30, we are much better and we try to do that every time." Because the Spurs generally have five capable scorers on the floor at a time, it forces opponents to have a greater attention to detail than usual. "Theyve got threats," Durant said. "Everybody on their team is a threat because of their offence. They move the ball. Theyve got 3-point shooters. You take away 3-point shooters, they get the role guys and they get the paint points. You take away that and they start hitting the threes. So we have to do both. We have to be able to close the paint up and get out to shooters. Easier said than done, but we can do it." The Spurs are off to a good start, but experience tells them they wont have as easy a time in Oklahoma City. And in 2012, Oklahoma City fell behind San Antonio 2-0 in the Western Conference finals before winning the series 4-2. "Weve got to know that in their arena its going to be different," Ginobili said. "Theyre going to be way more aggressive, theyre going to be pushed by their fans. We just won two games. They are going to make more shots, they are going to attack harder, they are going to go to the free-throw line more. So, there are a lot of things that they can do much better and were not going to make as many shots." LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Aaron Harrison scored 19 of his 28 points in the first half and No. 1 Kentucky started all freshmen for the first time in rolling to an 87-49 victory over Robert Morris on Sunday night. After three games of starting four freshmen around sophomore 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein, coach John Calipari rolled out a rookie lineup of Harrison and twin brother Andrew, James Young, Marcus Lee and Julius Randle. That look lasted just 51 seconds as Cauley-Stein replaced Lee, but the Wildcats (3-1) used other combinations of highly touted recruits. Harrison ended up grabbing the spotlight instead of leading scorer Randle, shooting 7 of 12 from the field and making all 10 free throws. He also had four rebounds and three assists. Randle added 10 points and 15 rebounds and Young had 10 points in the rematch of last springs NIT game won by Robert Morris. The game quickly turned into a mismatch as the bigger, faster, Wildcats jumped out to a 17-2 lead and led by as 40 points. Kentucky shot 28 of 57 from the field (49 per cent), outrebounded the Colonials 56-33 and dominated the inside 36-16. Cauley-Stein finished with a career-high 13 rebounds, and Andrew Harrison had eight points. Karvel Andersons 16 points led Robert Morris (2-2), which shot just 16 of 69 (23 per cent). The game itself was intriguing with the Wildcats facing the team that ousted them from the NIT with a 59-57 NIT loss outside Pittsburgh in March, sparking Colonials fans to storm the small home court in celebration. In many ways that contest typified Kentuckys disappointing and inconsistent season with a four-man group including big man Nerlens Noel -- whose season-ending knee injury hastened the downfall -- and guard Archie Noel. Both are now gone to the NBA. Calipari hasnt watched the tape of that game, but the lingering memory of the loss stayed with veterans such as Jon Hood up until practice. As for this years eight-man crop of talented newcomers, they were trying to get over Tuesdays 78-74 loss to No. 2 Michigan State in Chicago. On both counts, the Wildcats succeeded quite easily. Kentucky faced a Robert Morris lineup featuring three returning starters from that game plus leading scorer Karvel Anderson, but the Colonials played nothing like last springs upset-minded squad. They started 1 of 10 from the field, and that first basket came on Aaron Tates jumper at the 11:36 mark. By then the Wildcats were up 17-4 and rolling toward a 44-20 halftime lead built on Aaron Harrisons hot start including 4-of-8 shooting and eight free throws. Everybody else was 9 of 22 as Kentucky shot just 43 per cent and committed 10 turnovers, none of which mattered because the Colonials were just 6 of 30 (20 per cent). What pleased Calipari was his teams 29-14 rebounding advantage including a 12-8 edge offensively. Cauley-Stein had 10 and Randle eight, just what the coach wanted to see. Then again, Kentucky had something to prove, none of which involved getting revenge against Robert Morris. Though the sting of Tuesdays loss subsided, the disappointment was something the Wildcats didnt want to feel again and thoroughly proved that against Robert Morris. Colorado Avalanche Shirts . ENGLEWOOD, Colo. Buzz Sawyer Jersey Retro . - Denver Broncos right tackle Chris Clark took exception when J.J. Watt pushed him around in a 1-on-1 pass-rushing drill and kept right on motoring toward the imaginary quarterback. Clark finally broke free with a swipe at the Houston Texans star that sent the pass rushers helmet bouncing on the ground. "Dont get mad when you get beat," Watt hollered at Clark. That turned into the theme of Wednesdays joint workout in full pads, one which ended with a lot of jawing and posturing after Texans safety D.J. Swearinger loudly celebrated his interception of Peyton Manning in an 11-on-11 drill. "I picked off Peyton today and I guess that got them a little chippy," Swearinger said. "The offence did great, ran the ball down their throat, so, hey, I would get mad, too. Thats all it is: players making plays and people getting mad." Broncos cornerback Chris Harris said its one thing to pick off Manning and quite another to go all gaga over it. "His swag just went to another level," Harris said. So did the Broncos indignation. "Theres about 200 guys out here," Broncos cornerback Aqib Talib said. "Its hard to avoid." No punches were thrown, however, as is so often is the case in these types of get-togethers. After all, players realize its a little too close to final cuts and the start of the season to risk fighting at practice. "We wanted to stay clean out here," Swearinger said. "Were not out here to start nothing with nobody, were out here to get good work. Both teams got good work. It got a little chippy at the end, but its all football. Its part of the game." Broncos safety Rahim Moore said the chippy moments were actually a good sign. "Theyre no punks and neither are we," Moore said. "So at the end of the day you do all your talking with the pads. Today they had a great day, we had a great day. So I actually like it because theyve got a bunch of competitive guys that we would love to go against each other every day. Its a great way for us to see how we match up, so we love it. Its fun." It wasnt all frayed nerves and trash talking, either. Top draft pick Jadeveon Clowney and star left tackle Ryan Clady battled to a draw several times during the 1-on-1 pass-rushing drills that proved the highlight of the two-hour practice. Clowney sought out Clady afterward and the two exchanged a fist bump in a show of sportsmanship. Clowney later smacked into tight end Jacob Tamme during a 9-on-7 drill and retreated to the Texans medical tent, where he sat out the final 45 minutes of practice. He didnt appear to be getting any sort of treatment, however, and appeared to walk off OK after practice ended. Asked what had happened to Clowney, Texans coach Bill OBrien said, "I dont know. I was in the middle of practice, so Ill find out." The team didnt issue any update, however. The Clowney-Clady matchup was one of the many benefits of the four hours of joint practices so far this week that both head coaches insist far outweigh the inevitable emotions that come with them. "You cant really simulate this when you go against each other," OBrien said. "The competition level rises, you see different schemes. You hear different communication on both sides of the ball. The coaches work together. Were able to talk to Denvers coaches and vice versa about some of the things theyre doing, what theyre looking for, what were looking for. I thought both teams worked very well together." Despite the pick at the end, Manning and the Broncos offence played much better than they had 24 hours earlier when Manning called out his teammates over a sloppy practice. "Im sure a lot of our guys noticed that he wasnt happy on the field," offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase said. "I spoke my mind in the meetings. Im not really going to do it out here for everybody to watch, but I said my piece. We made sure that we came out here and had a better day." The teams have one more joint practice Thursday, this time in shells and shorts, which should further reduce any extracurricular activity, before their preseason game Saturday night. The Ukrainians are scheduled to face the United States in a friendly on Wednesday in Cyprus, a match moved from Kharkiv to Larnaca for security reasons. "The national team is a symbol of unity because players come from all over Ukraine," said its captain Anatoliy Tymoshchuk on a wind-swept practice pitch behind the teams hotel in the coastal resort of Ayia Napa. "Were all one big family, were all united." Speaking ahead of the teams training session on Tuesday, Tymoshchuk said the troubles at home do weigh on players minds. "Its a dangerous situation," he said. "We have our families, we worry but we hope that we can keep the peace in Ukraine as quickly as possible." Team spokesman Alexander Glyvynskyy said Wednesdays match is dedicated to the people of Ukraine under the slogan "Peace for Ukraine." "We are not ready for war," Glyvynskyy said. "We hope that we can be good neighbours (with Russia) in the future." Ukraine coach Mykhailo Fomenko said he wanted his teams performance to send a message of unity back home. "Most important is unity and concentration, its important for all Ukrainians," Fomenko said. "I told the players to play like one unit." Despite threats to cancel the match, Ukraine football association president Anatoliy Konkov said Tuesday the game would go ahead. "(We) reached a consensus to play the USA after all," Konkov said in a statement that also praised the American team. The match, which will be played at Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium, is a key warm-up for the United States ahead of this years World Cup. But for Ukraine, which failed to qualify for the tournament in Brazil, it will serve as preparation for the qualifying tournament for the 2016 European Championship. "This game is a huge opportunity, mainly for our European-based players, for those guys to prove to us that they are eager and hungry to jump on the train to the FIFA World Cup," U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann said. Fomenko said earlier in Kyiv that he expects Wednesdays game to be similar in style to a Premier League match, since many of the American players play for English clubs. Glyvynskyy said he expects the Americans to play an attacking game, but that Ukraine is injury-free and has all its best players available. "The players want to play on an official level and want to test their level of play after a two-month winter break," he said. He added that Cyprus was an ideal location for the match because it was relatively simple to organize at short notice and there are no problems with visa issues. Antonis Papadopoulos Stadium has hosted many of Cyprus international matches, but its not the Mediterranean islands top football venue. The GSP Stadium in Nicosia, however, is unavailable because Cyprus is hosting Northern Ireland in another friendly. Its the second time in recent weeks that Cyprus has been selected as an alternate venue for a match involving a Ukrainian team. Really, he had no choice or there could be devastating consequences. "A heart surgery will make you kind of realize you need to start doing things right, especially diet wise," Bryant said. "Ive really cleaned things up a little bit. So far, so good." Bryants comeback from a major health scare continued Wednesday when the Browns defensive lineman returned practiced for the first time since having a procedure in December to fix an irregular heartbeat — a condition he has had for years — that led to him having his first season with Cleveland cut short. On Dec. 6, Bryant underwent a cardiac ablation, an operation that involves a catheter being inserted to destroy a small area of bad heart tissue. The 6-foot-6, 310-pounder had at least two episodes last season when his heart raced out of control, including once during an Oct. 3 game against Buffalo. Bryant was hospitalized overnight and the 29-year-old had a recurrence two months later following a home loss to Jacksonville. It was then that Bryant, who was forced to leave a 2012 game for Oakland with a fast heart rate and light-headedness, was advised to undergo the ablation. "I felt like after I experienced what I did on the field that it was finally time to do something to fix that," Bryant said. "So while it was a trying time, I was also excited to get this procedure done and put this behind me. Since then, Ive been training and feeling real well. "Im back. Im healthy." Bryant missed the first minicamp practice on Tuesday for personal reasons, but joined his teammates for their second workout, which was held inside again because of rain and wet grounds. Bryant was welcomed back by everyone, including linebacker Quentin Groves, who also had a heart ablation in 2008. Groves condition was first diagnosed when he was in college but he didnt decide to have the procedure until it was spotted again at the NFL combine. "Its kind of scary not knowing what it is," Groves said. "The way it was explained to me when I had my procedure, the doctor told me one day you could not wake up. I was like, Well, OK, if I was your son,, what would you do? He said, I would have the procedure done. Jean-Pierre Dumont Jersey. "Anytime someone plays with your heart, youre kind of scared." Groves spoke with Bryant before he had the operation, and joked that he had to comfort his big teammate. "Des is a big baby. I have to rock him to sleep at night. No, Im just kidding," Groves said. "I just told him, Its a fairly simple procedure. I recommend you get it done. Im proud that you got it done before it became a problem for you." Bryant wasnt anxious about the operation. He was most fearful during the episodes when his heart raced. "I would feel like I had a fast heart rate and the next thing I know I was going to the hospital," he said. "That was the only real scary thing." Bryant was one of the biggest off-season acquisitions in 2013 by the Browns, who signed him to a five-year, $34 million free agent contract. Bryant had an immediate impact, recording two sacks and a career-high 10 tackles in the opener against Miami. He was Clevelands best defensive lineman through four games, but his production fell off sharply following his hospitalization. He finished with 3 1/2 sacks in 12 games. Bryant, though, doesnt know if theres a direct correlation between his drop-off and heart ailment. Hes excited about the new defensive scheme brought in by coach Mike Pettine. "Theyve got a few wrinkles here and there that kind of switch things up that really make it challenging for offences," he said. "I cant wait to continue to grow and learn in this system and see where this will take us." Does he fit in it? "Absolutely," he said with a smile. "Im a good fit for any defence."
