GLENDALE, Ariz. Mavericks Jerseys 2020 . -- Josh Beckett said he will be ready for the start of the Dodgers season after having a rib removed last July in a surgery to alleviate a nerve condition that was affecting his right arm "I dont have numbness and tingling, anymore," Beckett said Monday. No doubts, either. The right-hander is expected to battle newly acquired Paul Maholm for the fifth spot in the Dodgers starting rotation this spring. Beckett, the fifth starter before last years mid-season surgery, breezed through his first bullpen session Monday in Arizona. He threw 30 pitches with no sign of trouble. "Im not tentative," said Beckett, who reported to camp a day late so he could attend a wedding. "Im going to throw as hard as I can and see what happens. Right now, I feel great. Ill throw the ball until I blow out and Im hoping thats not for a few more years." The Dodgers signing of Maholm on Saturday is considered a hedge against the possibility of further injury to Beckett, a three-time All-Star whom the Dodgers acquired from Boston along with Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Nick Punto in a 2012 trade. "Josh is doing really well, but hes coming off tough surgery and theres not a lot of history with that surgery, so well see where things go," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. Beckett underwent the same surgical procedure that former St. Louis Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter underwent in July 2012. Carpenter went on to pitch in six more games in 2012 -- three in the regular season and three in the playoffs. But Carpenter did not pitch in 2013. He announced his retirement in November. Beckett said he has spoken to Carpenter. He said he was told Carpenters nerve condition was more severe than his own. Beckett also said the surgery was more complicated. Dr. Greg Pearl of Dallas performed both procedures. Carpenters experience and advice helped, he said. "It got me through the mental part," said Beckett, who was 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA when he landed on the disabled list on May 14. Neck problems and numbness in his right hand had troubled Beckett for the last few years. It got to the point where he learned how to drive with only his left hand. There were times, he said, when he couldnt feel the steering wheel with his right. "Its crazy how simple things become difficult to do," he said. The surgery, which also includes removal of some connective tissue, alleviated pressure on a nerve in his neck, he said. He never felt any pain. But there were moments when he had no control of his pitches. "I didnt know if I was going to throw it over the backstop," he said. "I had no idea where it was going to go." Beckett arrived in camp with his confidence bolstered by three workouts during the last couple of weeks in Texas. He threw off a mound twice, on Jan. 31 and again on Feb 3. Cold weather forced him inside on Feb. 6 where he threw 38 pitches off a flat surface. Beckett has no illusions about the competition he faces in camp. "Its just if hes healthy," Mattingly said. "Josh throws the ball good. Hes been a quality pitcher for a long time and he still has good stuff. How he bounces back, well see. Weve had nothing but positive reports all winter. Josh has never been in the bullpen. Obviously, its a competitive situation. Were not handing anything out for anybody. If hes healthy, well see." Beckett expects to have more time to prepare than the Dodgers calendar might indicate. They break camp in Arizona after a March 16 game and travel to Australia for a pair of regular-season games in Sydney against the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 22 and 23. "Im probably not going to start opening day in Australia," Beckett said. "Theyre paying a guy a lot of money to do that. Not all of us are getting ready for those days. Some of us have a little more time than it appears we do." NOTES: Outfielder Yasiel Puig is already in camp. Mattingly might open the season with the versatile Puig at the top of the Dodgers batting order. .The rest of the team is scheduled to report on Thursday. Courtney Lee Jersey . Watson shot a 3-under 68 on Friday for a share of the lead with fellow Hall of Famers Langer and Montgomerie and three other players. "Tom had a great finish last week in the Regions Tradition major and Langer is always there, so I felt that if I was equal or around them after two days, I would be quite happy," Montgomerie said. "I was and I am and it gives me an opportunity to go forward at the weekend." The 64-year-old Watson had five birdies and a double bogey -- on the par-4 12th -- to reach 4-under 138 after two rounds at Harbor Shores. "When I dont do well I get angry with myself still," he said. "Like (Lee) Trevino said, When I stop getting angry with myself, then I know its time to quit. And I havent reached that point yet. I get frustrated at times, but I still have some fire." Langer also had a 68, and Montgomerie shot 69 to join Watson, Bart Bryant, Steen Tinning and Kiyoshi Murota atop the leaderboard. Bryant shot 67, Tinning 66, and Murota 65. The six-way tie for the lead is the most on the Champions Tour after 36 holes since an eight-way tie in the 2006 Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Michigan. Montgomerie talked more about Watson than himself afterward. "Hes hitting the ball great," Montgomerie said. "Sixty-four years old. Its amazing how he still is very competitive and extremely competitive. Seeing him at very close quarters, believe me he is extremely competitive and its great to see." Murota, from Japan, had the best round of the day, chipping in for eagles on the par-5 fifth and ninth. Bryant bogeyed the 18th hole to drop into the tie for the lead. Tinning, from Denmark, birdied No. 17 in his bogey-free round. Steve Pate (67) was a sttroke back along with Stephen Ames (68), Russ Cochran (69), Mark Brooks (71) and Dan Forsman (73). Boban Marjanovic Jersey. The group at 2 under included first-round leader Joe Durant (75), Jay Haas (71), Scott Simpson (69) and Duffy Waldorf (70). Watson, Langer and Montgomerie created buzz early in the day with their names atop the leaderboard. Watson had a 3-under 33 on the front nine, but double-bogeyed the 12th with a stubbed chip and three putts. Trying to win for the first time since the 2011 Senior PGA, hes coming off a sixth-place tie last week in the Regions Tradition in Alabama. "I hit the ball pretty well last week and finished with a good round on Sunday, and its kind of carrying on right now," he said. "So well see what happens the next two days." Langer, a two-time winner this season and the leading money winner on the Champions Tour five of the last six years, birdied the first two holes. "On this golf course you never know whats going to happen," Langer said. "There are some low scores out there, but there are also some high numbers. So it was good to get in the red numbers right away and I felt good about my game starting off." Montgomerie, playing in his first Senior PGA and seeking his first Champions Tour victory, took advantage of a friendly forward tee position and made an eagle on the par-5 15th. He hit his 8-iron approach from 173 yards to 10 feet. "Amazing, fantastic," Montgomerie said. "I havent putted well, to be honest, over the first two days. I missed a number of makeable putts that havent started on line, which has been disappointing." Roger Chapman, the runaway winner in 2012 at Harbor Shores, was 1 over after rounds of 71 and 72. Kenny Perry, the Regions Tradition winner last week, followed his opening 70 with a 75. Kohki Idoki, the winner last year at Bellerive in St. Louis, birdied the last two holes for a 70 to make the 36-hole cut on the number. ' ' '
A Flyers defenceman leads the charge, the Kings’ top line is rolling, Fantasy tips and more in Scott Cullen’s Statistically Speaking. Jim Plunkett Jersey . HEROES Mark Streit – The 37-year-old Flyers defenceman had a goal and two assists in a 7-3 win over Tampa Bay. He has 18 points (1 G, 17 A) in the past 19 games and, based on with-or-without-you (WOWY) stats this year, won’t be any worse off while frequent partner Nicklas Grossmann is injured. Kings top line – Marian Gaborik, Anze Kopitar and Jeff Carter opened the scoring against Toronto, 37 seconds into the game, then iced the game with an empty-netter with a minute remaining. Gaborik has 15 points (10 G, 5 A) in his past 12 games, Carter has 13 points (4 G, 9 A) in the past dozen games and Kopitar has 21 points (4 G, 17 A) in the past dozen games. ZEROES Evgeni Nabokov – Tampa Bay’s backup didn’t provide much of a break for starter Ben Bishop, allowing four goals on 13 shots against Philadelphia and getting pulled after 22:36. Booth and Clarkson – While the Leafs had to be happy with their overall matchup against the Kings, wingers David Booth and David Clarkson failed to register a shot attempt, while combining for nearly 28 minutes of ice time. LINEUP NEED TO KNOW Victor Hedman – Tampa Bay’s top defenceman suffered a lower-body injury against Philadelphia and will be day-to-day. With Radko Gudas also out, Nikita Nesterov likely moves into the lineup and Mark Barberio, who played 21:14 at Philadelphia, could handle a bigger role. Tyler Johnson – The Lightning pivot suffered a lower-body injury at Philadelphia. Tampa Bay is at least well-equipped to handle an absence down the middle of the ice, with Steven Stamkos, Valtteri Filppula, Brian Boyle and Cedric Paquette available. They’ve also recalled Vladislav Namestnikov from the AHL. Rob Zepp – The 33-year-old who made his NHL debut earlier this season, and played the past seven years in Germany, stopped 21 of 24 shots in a 7-3 win over Tampa Bay. Braydon Coburn – Suffered a lower-body (foot?) injury that is expected to keep him out four weeks. With Nicklas Grossmann already out, playing time is opening up on the Philadelphia blueline for frequent scratches Michael Del Zotto and Carlo Colaiacovo. Incidentally, before getting hurt, Coburn was having a nice game (9 shot attempts for, 0 against) in his 6:07 of even-strength ice time. Morgan Rielly – Played 20:18 at Los Angeles, in a 2-0 loss. While it was his lowest ice time in three games with the new coaching staff, it also marked the first time in Rielly’s career that he played at least 20 minutes in three consecutive games. SHORT SHIFTS Lightning D Anton Stralman recorded a pair of assists in a 7-3 loss to Philadelphia, giving him six assists in the past six games…Flyers C Claude Giroux had a couple of assists in the win, moving to a tie for second in the league with 48 points (13 G, 34 A) in 42 games…Flyers RW Jakub Voracek added a goal and an assist, and leads the league with 52 points (17 G, 35 A) in 43 games. Avalanche G Semyon Varlamov stopped 36 of 38 shots in a 2-1 loss to Washington. Capitals G Braden Holtby turned away 31 of 32 shots in a 2-1 win over Colorado. Holtby has a .932 save percentage since the beginning of December, second-best behind Carey Price among goaltenders with at least 500 minutes played…Kings G Martin Jones stopped all 19 shots he faced in a 2-0 win over Toronto. Jones has a 4-3-2 record this season, allowing a total of one goal in his four wins. FANTASY FOCUS It’s a busy night on the ice, so here are a half dozen players to consider plugging into your lineup: Justin Abdelkader – A plough horse who gets ice time with the thoroughbreds in Detroit, Abdelkader has eight points (4 G, 4 A) in the past eight games and, even better, is going up against the Sabres. Chris Kreider – It’s been an uneven start to the season for Kreider but, as the Rangers are rolling, he’s picking up too, with five points (3 G, 2 A) in the past five games. Mike Fisher – Was productive almost immediately upon returning to the Nashville lineup and has seven points (4 G, 3 A) in the past eight games. Nice secondary scoring if you can get it. Brett Ritchie – Ice time (by minutes) in his first six NHL games: 10, 12, 12, 14, 17, 19. That trend is heading in the right direction and Ritchie scored a goal with five shots on goal while skating with Jamie Benn last game. Sam Gagner – With Martin Hanzal out, more time available at centre in Arizona and Gagner has 10 points (4 G, 6 A) in the past nine games. David Pastrnak – Though the rookie has a modest three points (2 G, 1 A) in seven games, he’s put 20 shots on goal and, in that small sample, has generated more shots per minute than any player in the league. CALGARY -- Dane Dobbie stands 5-foot-8, but the Roughnecks forward has been a big contributor to Calgarys offence all season. Saturday night was no different. Dobbie scored three goals and assisted on another to lead Calgary to a 10-7 victory over the Rochester Knighthawks in the opening game of the National Lacrosse Leagues Champions Cup final. "Youve got people that are probably a foot-and-a-half taller than him just trying to break his wrists," said Roughnecks coach Curt Malawsky. "Theyre not trying to dislodge the ball, theyre trying to break his wrist and break his arm. You see at the end, the guy tried to take his head off. But all that does is fuel Dobs fire." The NLLs leading goal scorer during the regular season with 51, Dobbie has a penchant for scoring the clutch goal. His third goal of the night Saturday, scored 2:07 into the fourth quarter, was his biggest of the game. It came after Rochester had reduced a 7-3 second quarter deficit to 7-6 entering the final 15 minutes. Dobbie neatly finished off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Karsen Leung and Mike Carnegie to give Calgary a much needed cushion and fire up the 16,541 raucous fans at Scotiabank Saddledome. "In the third quarter, we just tried to wear them down," Dobbie said. "The breaks werent going our way, but I think we took a bite out of them. We worked hard, we got to the dirty errors and made their defence run a lot." Three minutes later, Dobbie rang a shot off the post that was knocked in on the rebound by Carnegie. "Weve got to be better, moving our feet and moving the ball, I dont think we did that all that well tonight," said Rochester coach Mike Hasen. "But give them credit, they put us in spots where we werent able to do that and (Mike) Poulin made those easy saves. Full value to them, they were good tonight." Poulin said the game was an example of every player in the line-up contributing. He was especially proud of how the team played defensively. "I gave up eight goals in a quarter against Edmonton a week ago so seven in a game -- Ill take it," said Poulin, who had 36 stops. "We did a fantastic job as a unit and it made my job a lot easier. When it was a one-goal game, I havent seen us more calm out there than we were tonight. "We kept our composure and we focused on the next shift." Curtis Dickson and Scott Ranger had two goals each for Calgary, annd Shawn Evans and Jeff Shattler also scored. Ted Kwalick Jersey. Evans added four assists for a game-high five points. Rochester, which has won the Champions Cup the last two years, got two goals from Craig Point and one apiece from Joe Walters, Cory Vitarelli, Stephen Keogh, Cody Jamieson and Johnny Powless. Game 2 goes next Saturday in Rochester with a 10-minute mini game to follow immediately after if the Knighthawks win to even up the series. "By finishing in first place, we earned this opportunity to go back now to our home barn where its a tough place to play," said Point. "We play good there, fans are nice and loud, just like it was tonight. Its our opportunity to go back and give it our all." Both teams required the mini game to win their respective division semifinals. After losing the opener to Buffalo, Rochester -- first in the East Division at 14-4 -- rallied at home to take Game 2 and also capture the mini-game 2-1 in overtime. Calgary -- second in the West during the regular season at 12-6 -- opened with a win at home, lost the second game in Edmonton, and rebounded to win the mini game 2-1. Trailing 4-1 in the second quarter, Rochester got back into the game on goals 1:17 apart from Powless and Point. However, despite multiple chances, they were unable to push one more past Poulin to square it up. Then, on a shift that fired up the crowd, Dobbie scored goals 34 seconds apart to restore a three-goal cushion at 6-3. "What a game our defence played. They won us this game and our offence will pick up the pace for next game and hopefully win that game for us," said Dobbie, the Roughnecks new leader with 62 career playoff points, passing Tracey Kelusky (60). While he looks forward to next weekend, he knows it isnt going to be easy. "Its a real tough buiding to play in, theyre first place for a reason," Dobbie said. "Its going to be a tough game but weve got to bring it, plain and simple. Weve got to be better next weekend than this weekend and that was our goal all season is to improve every game." Notes: Geoff Snider (knee) was unable to suit up for the Roughnecks. He was hurt three weeks ago in the opening game of the playoffs... Missing for Rochester was veteran Dan Dawson, who was shaken up on a heavy hit last Saturday... It was the first ever playoff meeting between the two teams... Rochester has won four NLL titles while Calgary has won two. ' ' '
Despite just one regulation win in their last 15 games, Dave Nonis re-iterated that he is committed to both Randy Carlyles coaching staff and to supporting the teams young players, particularly Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner. Cheap Shoes Discount . Speaking Thursday on TSN 1050 Thursday, the Leafs GM also touched on the questions surrounding the teams leadership and the struggles of his big-name free-agent signing. “Its not from lack of effort from the coaching staff. Randy didnt get stupid overnight, hes a heck of a coach,” Nonis said, pointing out that he felt the Carlyle-led staff was the biggest reason the team broke its nearly decade-long post-season drought last year, adding that rumblings about his job security are “completely unfounded.” The GM, still in his first year on the job after taking over on January 9 from Brian Burke, named “consistency” as the teams biggest concern 36 games into the season. “Its not that we havent seen high-level play from them, its that it hasnt happened on a 60-minute basis very often, and it hasnt happened on a nightly basis and that has to change if we want to turn this around. Despite the ongoing struggles, Nonis has been encouraged by the play of the Leafs youngsters, particularly on the back-end. “One of the bright spot of our slide has been the play of our young players,” Nonis said, noting that Gardiner and Rielly “are the future of our team.” The decision to keep Rielly was one the Leafs brass had battled with all season, but with the 19-year-old demonstrating that he was one of the teams “top two or three defenceman over the last five games,” the choice was made to allow him to develop his game in the NHL. “His play dictated that he was going to be (with the Leafs moving forward),” Nonis said, while also mentioning that he expects both Rielly and Gardiner to keep playing on a regular basis. Furthering his commitment to the teams youth, Nonis made it known that the Leafs are going to have to live with the mistakes made by players like Rielly and Gardiner if the team wants them to develop properly. “Theres very few young defencemen in this league that dont make mistakes, particularly ones that are offensive minded like Jake,” Nonis explained. “Jake has a bit of a gamblers mentality and thats what makes him special and what makes him dangerous and it also causes some turnovers.” Asked about whether he has explored trade possibilities, Nonis said he is having discussions but is not willing to pull the trigger on deals which would negatively impact his teams future. “If the moves available are going to hurt your team long-term, then theres absolutely no reason to make any of those moves.” Regarding questions about the teams leadership, Nonis gave his captain a strong vote of confidence, while also saying the loss of veteran centre Dave Bolland may have had a bigger impact than many thought. “Dion has probably played the best hockey he has as a Leaf, this year,” Nonis said. “The one guy that I think weve really missed in terms of how he plays the game in terms of what he brought to us early on is Dave Bolland. He was a catalyst early on for our team and I think a lot of the players were following him.” Touching on his big free-agent acquisition David Clarkson, Nonis explained he isnt expecting the $5.2-million-a-year winger to replicate the 30-goal season he had with the Devils in 2011-12, but does need him to provide something more than what he has demonstrated thus far. “We need David Clarkson to be David Clarkson. I dont think hes a 30-goal scorer, we said that when we signed him. We need him to be hard to play against...he needs to be himself, he cant do more than hes capable of.” Cheap Shoes Wholesale . Approached to discuss his early season slump, Lawrie obliged but it wasnt long before he got a little help from a friend. "Hell be fine," Jose Reyes shouted as he walked by the discussion. The 24-year-old had a solid Grapefruit League, hitting .339/.373/.484 with two home runs. But thats spring training, the quality of pitching varies (Baseball Reference ranked Lawries mound opponents an 8.6/10) and the types of pitches that get thrown in certain counts are different; often times a pitcher goes into an appearance looking to work on specific parts of his repertoire. Eight games in, Lawrie insists hes not pressing. "Its a long season, man," said Lawrie. "I mean, weve still got 140-plus games so for me to push the panic button right now is no point because its a long year so stay healthy, just keep going and grinding and getting after it. The main thing is that were winning so obviously find positivity there and obviously look to do the job again today and find some way to contribute to the team." The thing is, Lawrie likely is pressing. The fact he doesnt want to talk about it, or admit to it, is fine. "Hes a little mental right now," said hitting coach Kevin Seitzer. "Hes sitting on pitches and hes guessing wrong is whats happening. When that happens you start to lose your approach; you want to get in just to try to hit the ball hard and that ends up being a recipe for disaster. Hes just pressing right now." Lawrie and Seitzer convened for an early Wednesday afternoon hitting session in the batting cage. The aim wasnt to go over significant mechanical tweaks but rather pitch recognition, which is sometimes compromised when a hitter struggles and begins to think too much in the batters box. It appears to the layman observer that the hitch Lawrie had last year has returned to his swing, which occurs just as hes cocking his bat to bring it through the strike zone. "He had some of that in spring training too," said Seitzer. "The late is from tension of reacting to fastballs instead of being ready to hit them and then when you do get one, when youre looking for one and you get it, then you try and do too much and that causes more tension." Manager John Gibbons goes out of his way to praise Lawries maturity, noting his third basemans ability to maintain his composure throughout the early season slump. "Hes come a long way," said Gibbons. Lawrie knows he can contribute in other areas. "Youve got both sides of the coin youve got to worry about," said Lawrie. Cheap Shoes 2020. . "Ultimately, if I cant get it done on offence one day than hopefully I can help the team out on defence. Thats kind of how it goes, just try to find a way to contribute." CECIL TAKING CARE Brett Cecil was available for the Blue Jays on Wednesday night against the Astros. He had a 16-pitch, one inning appearance versus Houston on Tuesday and Cecils been careful since spring training not to overextend his arm. "Really what it comes down to is how I feel the day after and how much I can go, whether its just a hitter or a full inning," said Cecil. Cecil made a career-high 60 appearances in 2013, his first full season as a reliever. He was shut down in mid-September, however, suffering from elbow pain. "When I throw one day usually there are no problems, no stiffness," said Cecil. "When I throw two days in a row, the next day it will be a little bit sore. Unless its towards the end of the season, a playoff race or something, that would probably be the only time Id go three days in a row." WAGNER RECALLED Reliever Neil Wagner is back with the Blue Jays, recalled prior to Wednesdays game against the Astros. Right-hander Marcus Walden, who didnt get into a game since joining the Jays on Saturday, was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo. The Blue Jays made no secret that Wagners springtime demotion was strictly a business move – Wagner had an option left and others didnt. "Wagner came into his own last year," said manager John Gibbons. "Hes a guy that can get some big outs late in the game for you." With Casey Janssen still on the disabled list with an abdominal strain and Sergio Santos in the closers role in Janssens stead, the Jays need another late-inning right-hander to work alongside Steve Delabar. Wagner fits the mold. With his mid-to-high 90s fastball, the 30-year-old stuck out 33 hitters in 38 innings over 36 appearances for the Blue Jays last season. This week, collegiate players from across Canada participated in three regional combines in Edmonton, Montreal and Toronto. Brandon Morrow Jersey . Those who impressed in each of the three events were asked to attend the main CFL Combine which begins Friday in Toronto. TSNs Duane Forde gives his thoughts on this weeks regionals, who impressed and who to look out for in Toronto this weekend. EDMONTON - Twenty-one draft eligible players participated in Mondays Edmonton regional combine with five of them advancing to the national combine in Toronto. The most impressive among them was Simon Fraser receiver Tore Corrado. Having established himself more as a kick returner than as a receiver at the NCAA Division II-level, Corrados quickness is his greatest strength. His skill set gives him an opportunity to be an effective player on the bigger Canadian field. Corrados SFU teammate Dylan Roper turned scouts heads early in the day when he hoisted 225 lbs. 26 times. The defensive end clinched his trip to Toronto in the one-on-one drills, where his quickness off the edge and non-stop motor were evident. The Regina Rams also had two players promoted to the main combine in guard Kyle Paterson and defensive end Michael Dadzie. The latter hails from the athletic hotbed of Brampton, Ontario and, although he wasnt a full-time starter for the Rams, he possesses a combination of strength and speed that intrigues scouts. Paterson hopes to continue following in the footsteps of fellow Weyburn, Saskatchewan natives and U of R products Brendon LaBatte and Brett Jones. He topped the bench press test with 27 reps and was clearly the most athletic O-lineman in attendance. Rounding out the national combine invitees was rock solid Manitoba linebacker Thomas Miles, who tested well and brings an element of physical play to the table. My honourable mentions from the Edmonton regional go to scrappy Manitoba receiver Andrew Smith, who combines good leaping ability with a willingness to compete in the air for every ball, and Calgary kicker John Mark, who wasnt as accurate as usual, but hit the ball well on every field goal attempt. MONTREAL - There were twenty-seven draft eligible performers among the participants at Wednesdays Montreal regional combine, five of whom earned their way to the national event. Nigel Romick of Saint Marys distinguished himself in a very competitive defensive line group, testing very well across the board and showing great versatility by taking one-on-one reps at tackle, end and even linebacker. Sherbrooke receiver Francis Lapointe, one of the favourites among scouts entering the combine, lived up to his advance billing, running solid pass routes and tying for the fastest 40-yard dash of the day. Two running backs with very different skill sets will also be moving on to the national stage. Bruising fullback Alexandre Dupuis of the Montreal Carabins came back last fall from injuries to both knees that had wiped out his 2012 campaign and continued to impress with his work ethic and toughness. Meanwhile, Lavals shifty Guillaume Bourassa, who has always had to share time in the crowded Rouge et Or backfield, shone as both a receiver and blocker. Performing on the Concordia University field that he has called home for the last four years, Stingers linebacker Travis Bent also punched his ticket to Toronto. The native of Ajax, Ontario was one of the most heavily recruited players in this class coming out of high school. A number of other players also caught my eye in Montreal, led by Mount Allisons Quinn Everett, who shows good potential as an O-lineman after spending the last four years on the defensive side. Defensive linemen Vincent Desloges (Laval), Shaquille Armstrong (Concordia) and Sanmi Adereti (St.FX) all had their moments, as did receivers Nathan Heather and Mike Harrington, while McGill DB Mattey Ossom and Bishops LB Omar Smith-Jackson displayed outstanding athleticism. TORONTO - On Thursday, Toronto was home to the third and final regional combine with 25 draft eligible prospects on hand. Four would ultimately earn promotions to this weekends national combine, led by former St.FX defensive back Raye Hartmann. An AUS All-Star in 2011, Hartmann had sat out the last two seasons, but showed absolutely no signs of rust as the 62" Mississauga, Ontario native was dominant in pass coverage and excelled in testing. Big Queens receiver Scott MacDonell was equally impressive, using his 65", 225 lbs. frame to his advantage in one-on-ones. He runs well for his size and could certainly contribute at the next leavel with most teams, at least occasionally, employing a tight end package. The day got off to a bit of a rough start for Toronto running back Aaron Milton, when he raised some eyebrows by declining to do the bench press test, later citing a shoulder injury. The big back more than made up for it on the field, showing both explosiveness as a ball carrier and receiver, as well as a willingness to get his nose dirty in blocking drills. High-energy defensive end James Tuck of the York Lions snagged the other invitation, combining an impressive level of athleticism with an even more impressive effort level. Winnipeg-born, Texas-raised offensive lineman Tchissakid Player of Northwestern State was a virtual lock to claim a spot at the main combine until a pulled hamstring ruled him out. Strong-legged kicker Zack Medeiros (Western), waterbug receiver Quincy Van De Cruize (Bishops), and hard-working Guelph defensive tackle Jeffery Finley were among several who didnt advance but likely still helped their stock on Friday. Ben Zobrist Jersey . So far, so good: Gonzalez has allowed one run through 12 innings this season. His second start came Tuesday night, when he gave up only three singles over six innings to lead the Nationals to a 5-0 victory over the Miami Marlins. Brandon Kintzler Jersey . The 25-year-old native of Milford, Conn., has 18 points in 41 games this season. The five-foot-eight 166-pound centre also has 28 points (10-18) in 15 games with AHL Oklahoma City. http://www.customcubsjersey.com/custom-e...-190n.html ... as usual. Even with the salary cap being set lower than many general managers expected and hoped for at $69 million and whats considered a shallow pool of top-end players available, this unrestricted-free-agent period figures to follow the familiar script of teams bidding up prices to keep up with each other.PHILADELPHIA - Despite a slow start to the season, the Raptors (4-7) can overtake the surprising 76ers (5-7) in the standings and claim sole possession of first place in the Atlantic when the division rivals meet on Wednesday. Dwane Casey has reminded his players that "the league hasnt gone anywhere" and their own division is a prime example. Its still early but Atlantic front runners New York and Brooklyn sit at the bottom of the division, both at 3-7, while Philadelphia - expected to be among the NBAs worst this season - has been a pleasant surprise, although the young 76ers appear to be coming back down to earth. "You read all this stuff about, theyre not playing to win, or whatever," Casey said, referring to the widespread belief that Philadelphia has constructed its team with the intention to tank this season. "Teams go in there with that relaxed attitude and thats not true." "Whatever the message is, those players are playing hard to win. You can have a different mission as an organization but as players theyre playing to win." After a 3-0 start - with impressive wins over the Heat and Bulls - the 76ers have struggled and, like the Raptors, have lost three of four coming into Wednesdays game. Two of Torontos defeats have come in overtime, including a 118-110 loss to the Trail Blazers at home Sunday afternoon. Rudy Gay scored 10 of his team-high 30 points during a 19-6 fourth-quarter run which was capped off by the forwards buzzer-beating layup to force extra time. The 76ers - who have defeated Toronto in seven of nine meetings - are coming off a 97-94 loss in Dallas on Monday, a game in which they shot just 38 per cent from the field. "They play really hard and outwork guys," said Philadelphia-native Kyle Lowry. "Theyve got some good players, theyve got players that are trying to make a name for themselves and theyre just going out there and playing hard." The Raptors havent been atop the Atlantic later than 10 games into a season since 2006-07, the only year they won the division. Trends and Tidbits Gay (20.6 points per game) and DeMar DeRozan (20.5) are one of four pairs of teammates averaging 20 or more points apiece in the NBA. Gay has scored 20 or more in each of the last four contests however, the team is winless (0-3) when both players exceed 20 points in the same game. The Raptors are 0-5 when DeRozan scores 20 or more. Gay and DeRozan have accounted for 46 per cent of the teams field goal attempts through 11 games, shooting a combined 39 per cent from the floor. The Raptors have reached 100 points in four of their last five games, averaging 102.4 points, after failing to hit the century mark in each of the six games to open the season, scoring 92.3. Toronto is 2-2 when scoring 100 or more this season and was 16-16 a year ago. Amir Johnson is one block away from reaching 500 for his career. Johnson has blocked 342 shots in 310 games as a Raptor and currently ranks seventh on the teams all-time blocks list. What to Watch For Control the pace With an average age just under 24-years-old,, the 76ers are tied with Cleveland for the youngest team in the NBA. Xavier Cedeno Jersey. . Theyre young, theyre quick and they look to run wherever possible. "They have some guys that get out in transition," Casey said of the hosting 76ers, who play at the fastest pace in the league. "Weve got to get back, build a wall, ready to play quick one-one-one defence and then when the shot goes up, weve got to make sure we find a body." Conversely, Toronto is last in the league in pace and although the Raptors coach has indicated hed like to get out in transition, hes also not planning on forcing the issue. "I dont know if we have natural runners," Casey said. "A lot of people get caught up in pace of play [but] I dont. I think you have to play the pace of play thats comfortable according to your talents." Pressure the young Sixers "The number one thing, the way they beat Miami, the way they beat Houston, the way they beat Chicago is hard play," Casey said of the 76ers. "Weve got to match that intensity at their place." The 76ers have snuck up on a few of the leagues elite teams with their hard play but more recently, their youth and inexperience has stood out. Philadelphia is committing an average of 17.3 turnovers per game, sixth most in the league, including 4.4 in the fourth quarter. Toronto has outscored its opponent in the fourth quarter in each of its last four games. Bench production Can either teams second unit step up and take pressure off the starters? Both teams rank in the bottom four in bench scoring, the Sixers reserves averaging 24.3 points per game (27th) and Torontos subs scoring 23.9 (29th). Who to Watch For Kyle Lowry The Raptors point guard has done a better job as the teams floor general, totalling 24 assists and only three turnovers over the last three games. However, he continues to struggle with his jump shot. Lowry is just 6-for-26 from the field in his last two contests, including 1-for-14 from three-point range. Lowry, a Philadelphia native, will look to get back on track against the team he grew up watching. "It never gets old," Lowry said ahead of his return to Philadelphia. "It never gets old because its home." The 27-year-old is averaging 13.8 points and 5.8 assists in five career games in his hometown. Evan Turner The fourth-year forward is one of the young 76ers players who has stood out early in the season, taking advantage of the added playing time hes been given. Turner is scoring a career-best 22.0 points per game on 47 per cent shooting, also averaging 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 assists. Historically, Turner has struggled against Toronto, averaging only 8.2 points on 35 per cent shooting in 11 career meetings with the Raptors. Injury Report 76ers rookie point guard Michael Carter-Williams has missed the last four games with a bruised left foot but participated in shootaround Wednesday morning and hopes to play against Toronto. Raptors forward Quincy Acy is questionable after spraining his right ankle early in Sundays game against Portland. ' ' '
HOUSTON -- The Texans have a starting quarterback. Don Chandler Jersey . Now they need star wide receiver Andre Johnson back in the fold. New coach Bill OBrien named Ryan Fitzpatrick the starter, an announcement overshadowed somewhat by Johnsons absence Tuesday on the first day of a mandatory three-day mini-camp. Johnson hasnt participated in any of the teams voluntary off-season workouts and said last month that he wouldnt attend these workouts, either. On Tuesday, he missed the opening day of workouts that are the last before training camp in late July. Fitzpatrick signed with the team in the off-season a day before Matt Schaub was traded to the Raiders and OBrien made him compete with the three other quarterbacks on the roster for the starting job. "He definitely earned it," OBrien said. "He earned it with his preparation. He earned it with his accuracy. He earned it with his command at the line of scrimmage." A former starter for the Buffalo Bills, the nine-year veteran started nine games last season for Tennessee after Jake Locker was injured. Fitzpatrick threw for 2,454 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. "This is where I wanted to be," Fitzpatrick said. "I wanted another shot at it. I wanted another chance to be the guy." OBrien said this decision doesnt mean that things cant change as the year progresses. "Everybody on our team every single day has to go out there and earn their spot on the team, earn their starting spot," OBrien said. "So quarterback is no different. We have confidence in his ability to lead our football team. Hes done a really good job in the off-season of picking up our system and hes executed it well." Case Keenum, who took over as starter when Schaub was benched last season, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are vying to be the backup to Fitzpatrick. "With all three of those guys we need just a little bit more consistency," OBrien said. "It has nothing to do with effort or work ethic. Those guys have all worked extremely hard. Theyve all done what weve asked them to do." Johnson has said he has not asked for a trade but last month wondered if Houston was "still the place for me." The 32-year-old receiver is Houstons longest-tenured player after joining the franchise in its second season. OBrien said that he has spoken to and text messaged with Johnson, but wouldnt reveal any details. He said he isnt concerned that Johnson has missed the implementation of his new offence. "I believe based on the different systems that hes been in that hed be able to pick up on our system," OBrien said. "Hes a bright guy, a very bright guy and a guy thats done a lot in this league. So I think hed be able to figure it out." OBrien also doesnt think that Johnsons absence is taking away from the rest of the teams work. "Its really about the guys that are here and theyre working extremely hard," OBrien said. "They dont seem to be too distracted." With Johnson out, Houstons young group of receivers is led by last years first-round pick DeAndre Hopkins and includes third-year players DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin. "Weve thrown a lot at them," OBrien said. "Its not easy to play receiver in this system and those guys seem to be getting better every day." Houston had preseason Super Bowl aspirations last year, but wound up with an NFL-worst 2-14 record. Rather than choosing a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick, they chose defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney, who is recovering from surgery to repair a sports hernia and also not at the mini-camp. Ruiz stroked a tiebreaking two-run double off Brian Wilson in the ninth inning, Marlon Byrd drove in four runs and the Phillies won 7-3 on Thursday night to take three of four from the defending NL West champions. Adrian Gonzalez -- whose fielding error in the fifth led to two runs -- tied the game 3-all in the seventh with a first-pitch homer to centre off Mike Adams, his former Padres teammate. But Philadelphia came back with four in the ninth. "I was basically trying to throw a backdoor cutter and it kind of ran back over the plate," Adams said. "Knowing Adrian from playing with him for many years, I knew he was going to be aggressive with the first pitch. I just missed my spot, and he did what he does." Ruiz regained the lead for the Phillies when he lined a 3-2 delivery down the right field line with one out after singles by Cody Asche and Ben Revere. Byrd greeted Jamey Wright with a bases-loaded two-run single after Wilson (0-2) intentionally walked Chase Utley and hit Ryan Howard with a pitch. Adams (1-0), making his third appearance after undergoing shoulder surgery last July 31 and missing the first two weeks of the season, pitched two innings for the victory despite allowing Gonzalezs homer. "Its been a while since I went two innings," Adams said. "When I came in after the seventh, they asked me if I could stretch it out and go back out for one more. So I said: Lets give it a try and see how it goes." Both managers lost replay challenges. The Dodgers were trailing 3-2 in the fifth when Asche, the Phillies third baseman, fielded Yasiel Puigs grounder behind the bag and threw home, where Ruiz tagged out Hanley Ramirez as he came in standing up without a collision. "That was a big play," Ruiz said. "It was a good throw. I was lucky because those plays happen so fast, you dont have time to think, but I got the ball early. I was on the side of home plate a little bit and he had room to slide, but he didnt and we got the out. I was stilll a little worried it would get changed because now with the replay, you never know. Montravius Adams Jersey. " Dodgers manager Don Mattingly requested a review from umpire Mike DiMuro based on the new rule pertaining to home plate collisions. It took several minutes but the call was upheld. "Before the ball is thrown, you cant set up where the runner doesnt have anywhere to slide, the way we understand it. Thats what we see on video," Mattingly said. "We felt like it didnt have a place to slide." Ryne Sandberg challenged a call by first base ump Hunter Wendelstedt in the Dodgers sixth. Juan Uribe was initially ruled safe on a grounder to shortstop Freddy Galvis. After a review of several minutes -- and a few choruses of "If It Takes Forever" by stadium organist Nancy Bea Hefley -- the call stood. Kyle Kendrick pitched 5 2-3 innings and allowed two runs and 10 hits, including a two-run homer by Uribe. The right-hander remained 0-7 in his last 12 starts. Dodgers right-hander Dan Haren was charged with three runs -- one earned -- and seven hits in six innings while striking out seven. Kendrick, who gave up a two-out single in each of the first three innings, yielded Uribes two-out homer to left field after a leadoff double by Gonzalez. But the Phillies capitalized on Gonzalezs second error of the season to grab a 3-2 lead. The three-time Gold Glove winner botched a one-out grounder by Utley with runners at the corners, as Revere scored the Phillies first run. Utley was credited with an RBI, and Byrd drove in two more with a double just out of the reach of a diving Puig in right-centre. Gonzalezs error was the Dodgers 23rd in 23 games. NOTES: The Phillies entered Thursday with a bullpen ERA of 5.64, the worst in the majors. ... Ruiz was 7 for 14 in the four-game series with a home run, four walks and his first six RBIs of the season. ... Byrd had two doubles in three at-bats against Haren, and is 12 for 24 for his career against him. ... Dodgers pitchers have given up 14 unearned runs. ... Jimmy Rollins, 5 for 21 against Haren, got the night off and Galvis started at SS for the first time since Sept. 7 of last season. ... Puig was 0 for 3 against Kendrick, after coming in 5 for 6 against him with a double and a triple. ' ' '
RIO DE JANEIRO - Taking on LeBron James isnt the biggest concern for the Miami Heat in Rio de Janeiro. Cam Erving Jersey . The team is still trying to figure out how to incorporate all the new faces that have replaced him. When the Heat play James and the Cleveland Cavaliers in a preseason game in Rio on Saturday, the main focus is on speeding up the rebuilding process after losing their biggest star.Dwyane Wade acknowledged Friday that there is a lot of work to do before the regular season starts.Weve got to learn every day, there are a lot of teams that are so far ahead of us as teams, Wade said. The game in Rio will be Miamis third in the preseason. It lost to the New Orleans Pelicans and the Orlando Magic earlier this month. No wonder the word patience was thrown around quite a bit on Friday. We are trying to understand that we are behind the eight ball because weve got 13 new guys, Wade said. Weve only been together for 10 days on the basketball floor. Weve got to all understand that weve got to have patience, because the last two years just happened, we had the same team and it just happened. But now this is not that kind of team, so we all have to have patience and understand that its a process.Chris Bosh, the other remaining member of the Heats former Big Three, said everyone knows this team will have to work harder than in previous years to make sure its ready for the Oct. 29 opener against the Washington Wizards. With this team we have to be patient with each other, he said. We have to get better at it and its going to take time. We are going to make mistakes and we have to understand that.We are not even close right now, but I like where we are headed, Bosh added. Guys are enthusiastic, its a very hard-working group. We are starting to pay attention to details, we are starting to really grasp how things go. Saturday will be another opportunity for us to get better.Coach Erik Spoelstra has been downplaying the encounter with James, trying to focus instead how to improve the revamped team.Spoelstra said he is trying to install a defensive system and thats taking some time. He said there is some growth to go in that area. Its always different when you have new faces, Spoelstra said. And thats the journey we are on right now with this group and we are trying to fast-track it. Thats why this week is an important week for us.Cavs coach David Blatt pointed out that the Heat arent the only ones with new players. We have a lot of new faces too, Blatt said. Modena, Italy (SportsNetwork. Drew Gooden Jersey .com) - Sassuolo trailed at halftime but stormed back to collect a 3-1 victory over Empoli at the Stadio Citta del Tricolore on Tuesday. The visitors were in front after only 18 minutes thanks to Daniele Croces strike, and they managed to maintain the lead through the intermission. But the hosts got back on level terms in the 56th minute through Simone Missirolis first goal of the campaign. Things looked grim for Sassuolo after Domenico Berardi failed to convert a 59th-minute penalty, but Sergio Floccari provided the go-ahead goal just two minutes later to rescue the home side. Berardi made amends for his penalty miss in the 73rd minute by notching an insurance goal, clinching Sassuolos second league win of the season to put the club on 10 points through nine games. "I did. Celebrate, celebrate," he said Friday. Everyone else, including the Jaguars (0-2), might wait to rejoice. Shorts has missed five consecutive games, including the final three last year, because of injuries. Hes seemingly healthy now after missing the first two games with a strained left hamstring and poised to make his season debut Sunday against Indianapolis (0-2). Coach Gus Bradley said Shorts will start and play extensively. "Oh, Im going," said Shorts, who is listed as probable on the injury report. "Im not going to worry. If something happens, it happens. Im going. Ive been out too long. I just want to help this team. Im going." The Jaguars surely could use some help. The receiving corps dropped six passes in a season-opening loss at Philadelphia. The group was even worse last week at Washington, with rookie Allen Hurns dropping a sure touchdown on the second play of the game, and Bradley later saying the receivers made 15 mental errors in all. Thats 15 mistakes in 48 offensive plays. "Well definitely do better this week," Shorts said. "It was a rough game last week. I think we all learned from it. Its my job to go out there and keep them calm." Shorts led the team in receiving each of the last two seasons. Thee fourth-year pro has 123 catches for 1,786 yards and 11 touchdowns in 37 games. Shareef Abdur-Rahim Jersey. But hes been known more for his stays on the sideline than his plays on the field. Shorts missed more than three weeks of training camp because of a strained right hamstring and sat out most of organized team activities with a calf injury. He also sat out 11 games because of injuries during his first three NFL seasons, missing six games with a hamstring injury in 2011, two games because of a concussion in 2012 and three games in 2013 with a groin injury that slowed him all season. Now, hes missed 13 games in four years -- not ideal for a guy in the final year of his contract. "Im just going to go out there and do what I can," Shorts said. "Obviously, I think I can help this team do better on offence." Jacksonville already ruled out rookie receiver Marqise Lee because of a hamstring injury. Fellow rookie Allen Hurns is probable with a sprained ankle. The only fully healthy receivers on the roster are rookie Allen Robinson, second-year pro Mike Brown and Tavarres King, who was signed off of Carolinas practice squad Tuesday. And King wont dress for Sundays game. Shorts appears healthy, too. "Im excited just to get back out there with my guys, with my teammates," he said. "I want to go out there and create some good memories and have fun. We want to play good at home and try to get this thing rolling." ' ' '
CHICAGO - The Chicago Bulls made the hard sell for Carmelo Anthony and brought their stars along for the presentation on Tuesday. Dwight Howard Jersey . That included Derrick Rose, no fan of recruiting. Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson were there, too, trying to convince the New York Knicks free agent to choose the Bulls. Anthony arrived at a decked-out United Center in the afternoon with agent Leon Rose and coach Tom Thibodeau, a police SUV trailing their oversized limousine. He walked past the Michael Jordan statue, waving to a small group of cheering fans as he went inside, where he spent much of the afternoon before getting a look at the soon-to-open practice facility across the street. The Bulls believe they have a strong pitch and a simple selling point: Anthony can transform a playoff team into a championship contender. They believe uniting Anthony with Rose and Joakim Noah would put them in position to contend for their first title since Jordan and Scottie Pippen led the way to two three-peats in the 1990s. And they certainly made their feelings clear on Tuesday, turning the arena into one big welcome mat. Two giant digital images above the entrance on Madison Street showed Anthony in a Bulls No. 7 jersey dribbling next to a championship trophy, fans stopping to take pictures. Another image around the corner also showed him in a jersey dribbling. Signs wrapping around corners of the building and stacked on top of each other read, "Carmelo Anthony and Chicago basketball" and "Melo" with a cropped Bulls logo. Anthony, a top target in NBA free agency, is expected to visit other teams. If he signed elsewhere, it would probably bring back memories for Bulls fans of failed attempts to woo stars. "It should work out," said James Babbitt of Chicago, who stopped to take pictures of the images above the entrance on Madison. "He can go anywhere and win now — or maybe later. But if he comes here, he can win now and later." The Bulls tried to reel in Tracy McGrady under Jerry Krause in 2000, with mascot Benny the Bull and the Luvabulls dancers greeting him at the airport, only to lose out to the Orlando Magic. In 2010, Chicago had enough salary-cap room to land two stars and went after LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. When those three wound up joining forces in Miami, the Bulls turned to Carlos Boozer — now a candidate to be amnestied — and added depth. They went on to win 62 games on the way to the Eastern Conference finals, with Rose capturing the MVP award. A year later, their championship hopes got derailed in the playoff opener against Philadelphia when Rose tore the ACL in his left knee. He sat out the following season, and his comeback got cut short when he tore the meniscus in his right knee in November. With two season-ending injuries, Rose is one big question mark. He has played in just 49 games the past three seasons, and it remains to be seen if he can approach his dominant form. If he does and Anthony lands in Chicago, the Bulls would be a strong contender in the East. The fact that Rose and Gibson were involved in Tuesdays presentation was notable for several reasons. Gibsons presence was a strong indication that the Bulls intend to keep him rather than trade him to make room for Anthony. Roses participation might quiet critics who have blasted his aversion to recruiting. The point guards stance stems from his reserved personality, his loyalty to his teammates and his belief that he can play with anyone — and beat anyone. Gordan Giricek Jersey . But Bayer Leverkusen, second in the Bundesliga behind Bayern, lost 1-0 at home to second-division Kaiserslautern. Wolfsburg held on with 10 men to win 3-2 at Hoffenheim. On Tuesday, Borussia Dortmund beat Eintracht Frankfurt 1-0 to also reach the last four. The semifinal draw immediately after the matches sent Kaiserslautern to Bayern Munich, while Dortmund will host Wolfsburg. The matches are on April 15-16. Hamburg, which has lost six straight in the Bundesliga, was 2-0 down inside 30 minutes after goals by Mandzukic and Dante. Arjen Robben added another after the break, before Mandzukic struck twice within a span of two minutes. "We were very concentrated, it..s never easy to win," Dante said. It could have been the last game in charge for Hamburg..s coach Bert van Marwijk, with media speculation that former coach Felix Magath would return to the club he captained to European glory as a player. Hamburg has dropped to next to last in the Bundesliga and could be relegated for the first time. Germany midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger made his comeback for Bayern as a substitute in the second half. He missed nearly three months following ankle surgery. Mario Goetze broke free on the left and found Mandzukic, who was left unmarked to slot home from about five meters (yards) in the 22nd. Four minutes later, Dante heaaded home from a corner by Toni Kroos. Victor Oladipo Jersey. Kroos also provided the long ball to Arjen Robben, who controlled it and drove home in the 54th. Goetze chipped a cross for Mandzukic at the far post for Bayern..s fourth goal in the 74th. Two minutes later, Hamburg..s defence failed to clear a long cross and Mandzukic fired home from close range. "Bayern plays in a league of its own," Hamburg defender Heiko Westermann said. Kaiserslautern beat Leverkusen on a goal by Ruben Jenssen in extra time. Mohamadou Idrissou, who had shot wide from the penalty spot early in extra time, set up his teammate with a pinpoint cross and Jenssen volleyed home in the 114th. Kaiserslautern reached the semifinals for the first time after 11 years. Ricardo Rodriguez converted two penalties before getting sent off but Wolfsburg held on to edge Hoffenheim 3-2. Wolfsburg now has the chance to reach the final for the first time since 1995. Last season it lost 6-1 to Bayern. Rodriguez, the Switerland defender, earned the second penalty after having converted the first for Wolfsburg. He drilled the ball into the roof of the net to restore Wolfsburg..s lead after Roberto Firmino..s equalizer. Bas Dost increased Wolfsburg..s lead in the 64th, before Rodriguez was sent off in the 71st for wasting time. Hoffenheim piled on the pressure and missed several chances before Firmino cut the deficit in injury time. But the home side could not find the equalizer to send the game into extra time. ' ' '
Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork. Andy Messersmith Jersey .com) - Mats Zuccarello scored a pair of goals and the New York Rangers used a three-goal first-period blitz to subdue Vancouver, 5-1, at Rogers Arena. J.T. Miller, Marc Staal and Ryan McDonagh also lit the lamp for the Rangers, who kicked off a four-game road trip with their second straight victory. Derick Brassard and Rick Nash each added a pair of assists, while Henrik Lundqvist turned in a 29-save effort. You can tell that we had the jump tonight, said Lundqvist. Thats the way we have to play. Nick Bonino supplied the sole offense for the Canucks, losers of four in a row including the final three of a seven-game road trip. Ryan Miller was on the hook for all five goals on just 23 shots. I think you play a certain way and now were getting caught on it, said Canucks coach Willie Desjardins. We try to play an aggressive style and if it doesnt work it goes the other way. McDonagh got the ball rolling when he tapped in a Jesper Fast feed just 2:36 after the opening faceoff. Despite misfiring a 3-on-1 on the previous shift, the Rangers went up 2-0 as Martin St. Louis fed Miller for a backhander in front at 3:19. It was 3-0 for New York from yet another 3-on-1 break, as Nash crossed to Zuccarello for a successful wrister from the right circle at 6:46. Staals point drive sailed through traffic and eluded a screened Miller at 7:17 of the second period and the Rangers were up by four. St. Louis failed in his bid to increase the Blueshirts lead when he was awarded a penalty shot at 12:27 of the second period after being taken down by Canucks defenseman Kevin Bieksa. Zuccarello, however, struck once more, a tap in of a Brassard feed to make it 5-0 with 2:21 left before the second intermission. Bonino finally gave the Canucks some life at the 4:20 mark of the third period, and though the hosts pressured New York for several shifts thereafter, no more pucks slipped from the grasp of Lundqvist. He made 14 saves in the final 20 minutes. Game Notes The Rangers have beaten the Canucks five straight times overall and three times in Vancouver since January of 2011 ... Zuccarello notched his first multi-goal effort of the season ... Bieksa and fellow Canucks defenseman Luca Sbisa were a combined minus-7. Grant Dayton Jersey . Hernandez (3-0) struck out 11 and shut down Oakland for the second time in a week, becoming the first Mariners pitcher to win three times in the first nine games of a season. With the usual "Kings Court" for Hernandez home starts expanded to a "Supreme Court" encompassing the entire stadium with yellow shirts and "K" cards, Hernandez gave up four hits in the 28th double-digit strikeout game of his career. Zunino chased starter Tommy Milone (0-1) with a two-run shot in the sixth. Miller followed two batters later with a solo homer to centre field with the wind blowing in. Hernandez was charged with two runs and walked none. He has 30 strikeouts against two walks in his three starts. Hernandezs first home start of 2014 was his best performance in the young season. All three of Oaklands four hits off Hernandez came in the span of five batters in the fourth and fifth. Jed Lowries one-out single in the fourth was Oaklands first hit, and Josh Donaldson followed with an infield single. Hernandez pitched out of the jam with strikeouts of Brandon Moss and Yoenis Cespedes. Alberto Callaspo doubled to lead off the fifth and advanced to third on Robinson Canos two-out error at second base. Hernandez struck out Sam Fuld looking to end the inning. Hernandez struck out the side in the seventh, but Daric Barton was hit on the foot by a curveball and Eric Sogard singled to open the eighth. That was it for Hernandez, and Seattles bullpen was shaaky. Kyle Wright Jersey. Lucas Luetge walked his only batter. Danny Farquhar walked Lowrie on a 3-2 pitch to score Barton. Brandon Moss added a broken-bat single off Charlie Furbush for the second run charged to Hernandez, and Cespedes beat out a potential double play to score another. Furbush threw a wild pitch that Fuld scored on to cut the deficit to 6-4, but Callaspo popped out to end the rally. Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his third save. The Mariners needed only three pitches to get to Milone, who was making his first start of the season after postponements caused his turn to be skipped. Abraham Almonte doubled on the first pitch of the game, Miller followed with a bunt single and Canos infield hit gave Seattle a 1-0 lead. Seattle appeared to add another in the fourth when Kyle Seager was ruled to have hit a solo homer down the right field line. The play was reviewed by umpires and the ball was called foul. But Seattle scored twice in the inning when Donaldson and Lowrie committed two-out errors after Dustin Ackleys double. Milone gave up 10 hits and three earned runs in his season debut. NOTES: Oakland OF Coco Crisp did not start for the fourth straight game due to a sore wrist. He pinch-hit in the ninth. ... The As will likely activate OF Craig Gentry from the disabled list Saturday, manager Bob Melvin said. ... Ackley became the first Seattle batter with three hits in a game this season. ... Seattle is still unsure of its starter for Tuesday in Texas. Manager Lloyd McClendon expected a decision before Saturdays game. Likely options are RHP Blake Beavan coming up from Triple-A or RHP Taijuan Walker being activated from the DL. ' ' '
