As 2013 winds to a close, TSN.ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. TSN.cas writing staff reflects on the best soccer moments from the past 12 months including CR7 one-upping Messi, Fergies farewell, the redemption of Robben and more! Cristiano Ronaldo will score whenever he wants to By: Ken Rodney He scores in La Liga and in the Champions League for Real Madrid. He scores for his country Portugal. He scores when he wants. That is the story of 2013 for the incredible Cristiano Ronaldo, who alongside Barcelonas Lionel Messi and Bayern Munichs Frank Ribery is a finalist for the Ballon dOr, FIFAs player of the year award. Fitting that he will face Messi for that award because there is always a place in a Ronaldo story where a comparison to Messi must be made, only this time it slants well in the favour of the Portuguese international. His 68 goals for club and country during 2013 are more than Messi and Ribery combined. During the current 2013-14 La Liga season he is joint top scorer with 17 goals, 9 more than his Argentinian rival, who to be fair is currently battling an injury. In international play this year he has 10 goals in nine matches, including two three-goal performances. While he will finish the year without getting his hands around a team trophy, it is impossible to not be impressed by the 2013 submitted by Cristiano Ronaldo. Fergie Says Farewell By: Mike Beauvais When Sir Alex Ferguson called time on his legendary managerial career in early May, the math showed that Manchester Uniteds season-ending match on May 20 at West Bromwich Albion would be the Scotsmans 1500th in charge of the club. It would be an anti-climatic one. United locked up the BPL title weeks earlier, but the United-West Brom season finale ended up being a highly entertaining 5-5 draw. Uniteds May 12 match, though, saw "Fergie" manage Manchester United for the last time at his beloved Old Trafford. As Ferguson made his way down to his familiar spot on the United bench, he greeted supporters and signed autographs, but there was no hiding the emotion in the Scotsmans face. It seemed as if it were just dawning on him that this would be the final time he took that walk. In the 86th-minute, Rio Ferdinand made sure his gaffer would go out a winner when he volleyed home to give United the 2-1 victory. After the match ended, United received its championship trophy presentation and Ferguson addressed the crowd for one last time. "If you think about it, those last-minute goals, the comebacks, even the defeats, are all part of this great football club of ours," Ferguson told his rapt audience. "Its been an unbelievable experience for all of us, so thank you for that." He closed his remarks with a stark reminder to the Old Trafford faithful, one that seems almost prescient now. "Id also like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all my staff stood by me, the players stood by me," said Ferguson. "Your job now is to stand by our new manager. That is important." Nobody expects David Moyes to be the new Alex Ferguson, but then again, nobody expected Alex Ferguson to be Alex Ferguson. Arjen Robben finds Champions redemption By Shane McNeil After the 2012 UEFA Champions League Final I had begun to believe that something was permanently broken in Arjen Robben. One of the worlds premier footballers, the Dutchman had Bayern Munichs 2012 European title on his foot when he drove an extra-time penalty into Petr Cech. Then, when the game went to penalty kicks, he was nowhere to be seen. His summer would get even worse when the Dutch team was bounced from Euro 2012 without a win, scoring just two goals. Yet, he was offered a second chance with Bayern taking on Borussia Dortmund in the first ever all-German Champions Final. In the 60th minute, Robben sent out a prayer from the left side of the goal and a ball that seemd destined for a goal kick suddenly found its way to Mario Mandzukics boot across the face of the goal and into the back of the net. A fluke, I told myself… A lucky bounce. Then in the 89th, the real Robben returned. Thundering into the box, he split two defencemen, forced Roman Weidenfeller wide and slipped a dribbler the other way, into the goal. Robben exorcised his Champions demons, claiming Man of the Match along the way. Iceland misses World Cup; FIFA misses out By Shane McNeil Seemingly every major international brings some flavor from the fans when it comes to soccer. Euro 2012 had the Irish fans serenading their team with "The Fields of Athenry" as they bowed out, winless. The 2010 World Cup had its ever-present vuvzelas, so loud that broadcasters tried to find a way to phase them out for live broadcasts. There will likely be a story for Brazil 2014, but it will not - sadly - be the fans of the Icelandic national team. Iceland was in a balanced qualifying group that featured top-10-ranked Switzerland and Slovenia, which had qualified for both Euro 2012 and the 2010 World Cup. On the last day of qualifying, Iceland held on to a 1-1 draw with Norway, while Switzerland did them a huge service by eliminating Slovenia with a 1-0 victory. Iceland headed to the play-off round with a chance to become the smallest nation to ever qualify for soccers biggest tournament, bringing their boisterous and colourful fans with them - in spirit at least. Sadly, Iceland would fail to score against Croatia, dropping the play-off 2-0 on aggregate, keeping one of the best stories of the qualification round out of the big finale. One year after Frenchman Johan Clarey set a World Cup speed record of 161.9 km/h here, Heel hit 148.4 kilometres per hour through the Hanneggschuss straight. Heel timed 2 minutes, 39.04 seconds on the 4.4-kilometre Lauberhorn course, the longest in the World Cup, which was softened by fresh snowfalls. Peter Fill of Italy was second, 0.30 back. Patrick Kueng of Switzerland trailed Heel by 0.45 in third. Christof Innerhofer, the Italian defending champion, placed fourth, almost 10 seconds behind his 2013 winning time. Erik Guay of Mont-Tremblant, Que., was fifth. Austrian Hannes Reichelt, who briefly held the speed record last year before Clareys run, said the course had been modified in the fastest section at the two-minute mark. "They made a little bit more turns at Hanneggschuss so there is no chance to get 160 (km/h))," said Reichelt who placed third last year.dddddddddddd Downhill standings leader Aksel Lund Svindal of Norway was 10th. "That wasnt too convincing. I actually felt better here last year when I won the trainings," said Svindal, who has never finished on a Wengen downhill podium in eight attempts. Bode Miller of the United States, the Lauberhorn winner in 2007 and 08 and runner-up the following year, was 15th fastest. Svindal and Miller both start in a super-combined event on Friday — won by the American in 2010 — that is threatened by a forecast for snow during a training run on Thursday. The slalom portion will be run first in the morning to give course workers more time to prepare the shortened downhill course in the afternoon. The 84th Lauberhorn race meeting peaks with the classic downhill on Saturday, traditionally the most popular event on Switzerlands sports calendar. A slalom on Sunday completes the program. ' ' '

(SportsNetwork.com) - The Detroit Red Wings aim to extend their longest winning streak of the season and make a move at first place in the Atlantic Division on Tuesday evening as they visit the struggling Florida Panthers. The Red Wings won their final five games before the All-Star break to post their longest string of consecutive victories since taking six in a row from Feb. 8-19, 2012. As a result, Detroit sits second in the division, two points ahead of Montreal and one back of Tampa Bay, which is visiting the Carolina Hurricanes tonight. A third-period collapse nearly ended the Red Wings win streak before the break, but the club recovered to win a 5-4 shootout decision over the Minnesota Wild. Detroit blew a 4-1 lead in the third period, however, Pavel Datsyuk and Gustav Nyquist both scored in the shootout. After Zach Parise missed high for Minnesota, Datsyuk was on point with his backhander as he lifted the puck over Darcy Kuempers glove and into the net. Petr Mrazek stayed with Mikko Koivu and stopped his attempts before Nyquist swerved in from the right side, caught Kuemper moving and slid the puck between the netminders pads for the win. Nyquist finished with a goal and an assist, Teemu Pulkkinen scored his first NHL goal and Jonathan Ericsson and Xavier Ouellet also scored for the Red Wings. We really wanted that second point tonight, said Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg, who had three assists. Petr was solid in net, then Pavel and Gus did their thing. Mrazek made 34 saves in the win and will likely face the Panthers for the first time in his career tonight with Jimmy Howard out with a torn groin. The Red Wings are set to play two straight and five of their next six on the road, while the Panthers play the fourth contest of a five-game homestand looking to avoid a fifth straight loss. Floridas 0-3-1 rut is its longest of the season and the club has not lost five in a row since March 27-April 4 of last year. The Panthers entered the All-Star break off a 2-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks. Roberto Luongo made 21 saves versus his former team, while Brandon Pirri prevented a shutout defeat by scoring with 2:32 left in regulation. They took it to us in that first period, Florida head coach Gerard Gallant said. It probably should have been 5-0 but Louie kept us in there. We played better in the second and I thought real well in the third. It was just a little too late. Luongo and rookie defenseman Aaron Ekblad return to the Panthers following All-Star Game appearances over the weekend. Luongo yielded four goals on 17 shots in the first period for Team Toews, which won 17-12. Ekblad has four assists for the winning club. Ekblad was selected to play in the game due to an injury to Colorados Erik Johnson and leads all NHL rookie blueliners with 19 assists and 25 points. The Panthers have won the first two of four meetings with the Red Wings this season, with both triumphs coming in Detroit. They have won five of the past seven encounters overall. Luongo was in net for both wins, giving him a career mark of 13-13-5 versus the Red Wings with a 2.85 goals against average and .919 save percentage in 32 games. Detroit has won seven of its past nine trips to Florida, however. Cheap Air Max 90 All White . Its Wu-Tang and Outkast in the final. ARLINGTON, Va. -- Barry Trotz was late for an appointment because he was at the DMV, getting his first Virginia drivers license and plates. His son is enrolled in school, and hes lived in his new house long enough for the air conditioning to break down. Hes not a Tennessee resident for the first time in 17 years, and the life upheaval was such that he didnt take his usual summer vacation in British Columbia. And all that was more or less the easy part. Now he has to deal with Alex Ovechkin. Trotz is the new coach of the Washington Capitals, which means first and foremost he is the coach of the immensely talented three-time league MVP whose individual accolades have yet to translate into substantial playoff success. Things will be plenty different for everyone when training camp opens Friday, but what arguably matters most is how No. 8 takes to yet another attempt to change the way he plays. "Physically, hes a strong guy," Trotz said in an interview with The Associated Press. "But theres areas in his game he needs to grow in, and thats really my job, to help him grow his game." Trotz is Washingtons fifth coach since Ovechkin entered the league in 2005, but hes the first who has been a head coach elsewhere in the NHL. He led the Nashville Predators from inception to this year, with 1,246 regular season and playoff games under his belt. He has an established idea how he wants to run a team -- hes already rejigged the coaches meeting room with more cutting-edge technology and made it more of a "war room." He has so much cache that he was able to give owner Ted Leonsis a frank assessment of the Capitals deficiencies while interviewing for the job. "Its the culture," Trotz said. "I just think a little bit of the inmates were running the asylum, thats No. 1. I think theres good talent, and I felt it needed some order." Thats not a dig at one particular player or front office person, but Ovechkin, as team captain, would be a central figure in any sort of culture change. Trotz praised the Russian forwards passion, desire and individual accomplishments -- but said there needs to be more. "If Ovi is willing to listen," Trotz said, "hes going to have a chance to do some great team things. And he is willing to listen. I dont see any reason in my discussions (with him) that hes not willing to change. Now change is going to be sometimes difficult for people at times, but the willingness to change, I dont see that being a problem." Ovechkin led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Looking at the tape, Trotz sees too much staying in place. "Everybody goes after Ovi for probably his defensive game and some of those commitments, and, yeah, there can be improvement," Trotz said. "And Ive said to him, I just want him skating again. I always think hes just dynamic when hes skating. So I just asked him, be in really good shape, be ready to skate, because youre not dangerous when youre standing still." Trotz said he wants to retain the offensive potential shown by Ovechkin and the Capitals while introducing some of the defensive principles that worked well with the Predators. "I want the Capitals to not lose their identity of being able to score," Trotz said. "But I want them to add another identity that theyre hard to play against and theyre hard to score against. If we can add that to the repertoire, then wed be a pretty good team." Ovechkin was moved from left wing to right wing under previous coach Adam Oates. Trotz said he might use Ovechkin on both sides. "If hes playing the game that I envision him being able to play, then I can see him playing left wing -- and I can throw him on the right wing on another line," Trotz said. "To me, hes more dangerous on the left. ... Defensively, hes probably better on the right." No one would forgive the Capitals players for being fatigued with change, having switched systems several times in recent years under coaches Bruce Boudreau, Dale Hunter and Oates. Trotzs message: Get over it. "To be honest, a lot of times systems are a little bit of a cop-out," he said. "If youre a good player, it doesnt matter what system youre playing, you should be able to play it. I think they use it as an excuse. If youre at this level and you cant figure out your role, then you probably shouldnt be in this league." Swell Flaske Norge . MILAN, Italy -- Newly crowned champion Juventus beat Roma 1-0 Sunday with a last-minute goal and set a new points record for Serie A. Pablo Osvaldos stoppage-time winner against his former club ensured Juventus moved to 99 points, beating Inter Milans record. AC Milan lost 2-1 at Atalanta in a match blighted by racism. Atalanta fans threw bananas at Kevin Constant, who is black. They were sarcastically applauded by Milan players Philippe Mexes and Nigel De Jong. Antonio Contes team can become the first Serie A club to reach the 100-point mark when it plays Cagliari in the last round at Juventus Stadium, where it has won all 17 of its matches this season. "My players are celebrating so much because there is absolutely so much to celebrate," Conte said. "We are doing something incredible, we have the chance to secure another record. "Juventus is coming off a fantastic cycle of three years, it has done something historic and I am proud to be the coach of this squad ... This third title is extraordinary, now we want to reach 100 points. The squad is still alive, regardless of the celebrations and a few over-the-top evenings." Earlier, Torino was held 1-1 by Parma. Europa League qualification will now be decided on the final day of the season. Torino remained sixth, a point above Parma and two above Hellas Verona and Milan At Atalanta, fans were warned over the loudspeaker that further incidents would lead to the game being suspended. "I dont think theres much to say about the banana incident," Milan coach Clarence Seedorf said. "The lads immediately got over it all and continued to play football. Lets hope the appropriate bodies manage to find out who it was, to ban him from football forever." Catania beat Bologna 2-1, but both sides were relegated after Chievo Verona and Sassuolo won. Elsewhere, it was: Livorno 0, Fiorentina 1; and Sampdoria 2, Napoli 5. In Rome, it was a clash between the top two teams in the Italian league. Due to the fierce rivalry, the match was brought forward three hours. Vasilis Torosidis had a goal disallowed for Roma for handball, while at the other end Paul Pogbas angled drive crashed off the inside of the far post. It appeared both teams would earn a deserved point from the match before Osvaldo -- who had been loudly booed by the Roma fans when he came off the bench -- was left unmarked to fire Stephan Lichtsteiners cross under the bar. Torino appeared to be on course to securing Europa League qualification after Ciro Immobile took advantage of a poor back pass from Gabriel Paletta to fire into an empty net at the end of the first half. Immobile has 22 goals this season, two more than Hellas Verona striker Luca Toni and three more than Juventus forward Carlos Tevez. Parma captain Alessandro Lucarelli was sent off for an elbow on Immobile shortly after the hour mark but the visitors levelled in the 71st minute when Afriyie Acquah was brought down by Kamil Glik. Antonio Cassano saw his penalty saved by Daniele Padelli but Torino was slow to react and Jonathan Biabiany netted the rebound. Immobile, who was booked earlier for his reaction to Lucarelli, was sent off two minutes later following a second booking for diving. In the lunchtime kickoff, Franco Brienza curled a stunning 30-meter effort into the top left corner in the sixth minute of added time to secure victory for Atalanta. Milan broke the deadlock early in the second half when Atalanta defender Gianpaolo Bellini turned Sulley Muntaris cross into his own net. Atalanta levelled from the spot in the 68th minute, with German Denis sending Marco Amelia the wrong way after Constant had fouled Carlos Carmona. Milan fought hard to win the match and Mario Balotelli -- who had hit the crossbar at the end of the first half -- saw an audacious effort from the outside edge of the penalty area crash off the far post. The only positive for Milan was the halftime introduction of forward Stephan El Shaarawy for his first appearance of 2014. Bologna and Catania will join bottom club Livorno in Serie B next season. Both teams are on 29 points, four behind Chievo, which snapped a three-match losing run to win 1-0 at Cagliari. Sassuolo is a point further ahead following a 4-2 victory over Genoa. Guay, from Mt. Tremblant, Que., clocked one minute 56.65 seconds down a Saslong course lined with huge jumps and filled with tricky terrain, making up time over the last few gates to edge Kjetil Jansrud of Norway by 0.12 seconds. "It is sweet," Guay said. "I skied really well and took the chances necessary." It was the fourth career World Cup victory for Guay, who also won gold in downhill at the 2011 world championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. Johan Clarey of France finished third, 0.24 back, and overall World Cup leader Aksel Lund Svindal was fourth, 0.29 behind. Bode Miller placed fifth, 0.39 behind, for his best finish in a speed event this season. Miller took last season off to recover from left knee surgery and he is improving race by race as he prepares for the Sochi Olympics in February. Miller would have made the podium if he was just a bit faster on the flats and said getting his equipment dialed in after so much time off was a big factor. "Theres so many details, you never know what it is thats really causing the problem," the 36-year-old two-time overall World Cup winner said. "The fact is we just dont have the whole thing together right now. Were close, and were getting there." Miller made up more than half a second on the technical lower section. "On the top I didnt feel like I was going fast," Miller said. "I took a little bit of risk in some parts and pulled off some decent turns and I skied pretty well but its one of those courses where theres not enough to it to bring it back in with my technical ability." Guay thought he had won this race last year until a drastic weather change helped later starters on a shortened course, with Steven Nyman of the United States taking the win and Rok Perko of Slovenia claiming second, relegating Guay to third. "I had a great run last year," Guay said. "In my mind I skied the best that I could have with my start number and not to take anything away from Nyman and Perko but the conditions do change and thats the reality of our sport. "I know that ski racing is like that," GGuay added.dddddddddddd"Ive been on the good side of the hundredths and Ive benefited from good weather sometimes. So you take it when you can and you forget it when youre on the other side." While it wasnt quite as drastic as last year, when winds played a role, changing light once again made a big impact. Guay, Svindal and Miller had to deal with less light on the gliding section on top but then all three racers excelled on the more technical section of the course. The highlights of the Saslong are the camel bumps, which launch skiers into the air for nearly 80 metres (90 yards), and the twisty and technical ciaslat section -- two areas that come one right after another midway down. There are also numerous little bumps and jumps, making for constant air time. "A lot of times Val Gardena goes under radar with Wengen and Kitzbuehel getting so much attention but I think its one of most fun courses on the World Cup," Guay said. Guays performance was all the more impressive considering that he had left-knee surgery in the off-season and missed most of preseason training. Jansrud also had left-knee surgery after a crash in the super-G at last seasons world championships in Schladming, Austria. Jansrud took silver in giant slalom at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and Saturdays result matched his best downhill finish from March, 2012, on home snow in Kvitfjell. Clarey also finished third in this race four years ago for his only other career podium. He stood first when the 2011 race was abandoned beause of strong winds after 21 racers had completed their runs. "Its unbelievable for me," Clarey said. "I almost quit skiing five months ago after my back injury." In the overall standings, Svindal moved 175 points ahead of Marcel Hirscher, who does not race downhill. Svindal also leads the downhill standings, 53 points ahead of Guay. Nyman was an early starter and made a big mistake midway down and had to make an acrobatic recovery to avoid injury. But his race ended there. Brice Roger and David Poisson of France also fell. Poisson slammed into the safety netting at full speed but eventually got up and skied down. The circuit moves over the Gardena pass for a giant slalom Sunday in Alta Badia, where Ted Ligety will attempt to duplicate his dominant win from last season. ' ' '
MONTREAL - Jonathan Crompton went to see American Sniper at a local cinema this week and got spotted by a fan because of his shaggy long hair.I was going to buy some popcorn, because you cant watch a movie without popcorn, and this lady comes up with her husband and kids and says I wish you all the best this year and I recognized you because of your hair, the Montreal Alouettes quarterback said Wednesday. So my hairs the most recognizable thing. I cant hide it.Crompton hopes to be more than just a wild hairdo as he enters his second season with the Alouettes after a see-saw 2014 campaign. He was cut in training camp by the Edmonton Eskimos in May, but then signed in mid-season just in time to help Montreal turn around what had been a disastrous campaign. The 27-year-old was not the most elegant pivot, completing 58.1 per cent of his passes for a so-so 85.2 quarterback rating. But he took over as starter on a 1-7 team and helped them finish a respectable 9-9.He also led Montreal over British Columbia in the East semifinal before losing a week later to Hamilton. This year, Crompton will have the benefit of a full training camp and go into the season for the first time as the incumbent starter. Were still a long ways from training camp and weve got a lot of work to do, said Crompton, in town for a week-long visit. We need to get ready for mini-camp in April. The organization has to go through the draft and all that. But were excited. Were looking forward to the opportunity ahead. It cant come fast enough.Quarterback was a nightmare position last season as the Alouettes tried to find a replacement for retired CFL all-time passing leader Anthony Calvillo. They thought their guy would be Troy Smith, but the 2006 Heisman Trophy winner struggled to complete passes and rarely ran the ball. The team also didnt win with Tanner Marsh or Alex Brink behind centre.Crompton was fourth on the depth chart when he signed a three-year contract in July. His arrival came just after general manager Jim Popp brought in two coaches, former quarterbacks Jeff Garcia and Turk Schonert, to help inexperienced offensive co-ordinator Ryan Dinwiddie. They liked what they saw in Crompton, who had eight appearances in 2013 as backup to Mike Reilly in Edmonton. He saw his first action as an Alouette on Aug. 22 when he relieved Brink in the second quarter of a 24-16 loss to Winnipeg. The Asheville, N.C., native looked sharp as he passed for 266 yards. The next week, he got his first CFL start in a win over Ottawa to start the Alouettes on an unlikely climb back to respectability. Including playoffs, the club went 9-2 with Crompton as the starter. Now he wants to keep it going.Im not going to change the way I prepare now that Im the starter, he said. I prepared the same even when I wasnt the starter. My mindset hasnt changed a bit. Right now, Im just enjoying the off-season with my family, working out and staying focused. He should also benefit from greater stability in the organization. Last off-season, the Alouettes took until late in the winter to name Tom Higgins as head coach get the rest of the staff in place. It took nearly half the season for the staff to be settled.Higgins is back, with defensive co-ordinator Noel Thorpe as assistant head coach, while Kavis Reed will handle special teams. Schonert was promoted to offensive co-ordinator as well as quarterbacks coach, filling in for Garcia who left the quarterbacks position at the end of the season. Dinwiddie remains as an offensive assistant coach along with Calvillo, who will make his coaching debut. Its different not having someone you worked with every day, but this is a business, said Crompton. I havent had back to back (position) coaches since high school. Its always a changing environment, so we try to keep it as constant as possible within ourselves. We wish Jeff the best. He helped me out tremendously, mentally and physically. But now my focus is on this year.Another change is that the long hair will soon be gone. He has already promised it to the Locks For Love campaign, which supplies wigs to kids with cancer. But hair has become his signature feature, so he has vowed to grow it back.Im not going to go completely bald, its just not my look, I guess you can say, he said. I want to have a decent length of hair. My thought process is that I want to grow it as long as I can so when I cut it, I have a little hanging out of the helmet. That would be ideal because I feel thats whats most recognizable about me now, my hair. Cheap Nigeria Jerseys . DETROIT - David Price walked off the mound Tuesday night wondering if he had just blown the AL Central title for his new team.It didnt take long for his team to improve his mood. After Price blew a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth, the Detroit Tigers only needed three batters to pull out a 4-3 victory and hold on to their one-game lead in the division. With the score tied 3-3, Ian Kinsler led off the ninth with a single, took second when Jake Petricka (1-6) walked Torii Hunter and scored when Miguel Cabrera lined a base hit to left field.I went into the top of the ninth knowing that I had to finish it off, Price said. I didnt care if I gave up two runs, but I couldnt give up three. Im just glad that our offence saved me.Hunter agreed that the offence wanted to make a statement and pick up Price. When youve got a 3-0 lead in the top of the ninth and David Price on the mound, you think the game is over, he said. But then they tie it, and we had to go right back out there and win it. Kins did a great job, I had a good at-bat to draw the walk and then Miggy did what Miggy does. For most of the night, it looked like Price was going to show exactly why the Tigers had traded for him at the deadline, taking a three-hit shutout into the ninth. Adam Eaton singled and moved to third on Alexei Ramirezs double. That got Joe Nathan up in the pen, and after Jose Abreu struck out, Avisail Garcia lined a two-run single to centre.Brad Ausmus visited the mound, drawing boos from the crowd, but he left Price in.Dayan Viciedo flew out to right for the second out, and Paul Konerko, who was honoured by the Tigers before the game, singled to move Garcia to third. Marcus Semien then blooped a single to centre, tying the game. With the way David was pitching, it didnt look too good for us, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. We got it to the bottom of the ninth, but first and second with no one out for Miggy isnt a great situation, either.Nathan (5-4) came in to get the final out, and picked up the victory after Petricka couldnt get an out in the bottom of the inning.White Sox rookie Scott Carroll allowed two runs a€” one earned a€” in six-plus innings. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out four.Chicago almost broke a scoreless tie in the fifth, as Josh Phegley hit Prices 3-2 pitch to the wall in left, but J.D. Martinez had plenty of time to set himself at the wall and reach up to make the catch to rob a home run. Price broke into a wry smile as he watched Martinez make the play. The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Rajai Davis singled, and was running on the pitch when Kinsler hit what would have otherwise been an easy double-play ball. Now in scoring position, Davis stole third and scored when Phegleys throw trickled past Marcus Semien and into left.Detroit used more speed to get a run in the seventh, as pinch-runner Andrew Romine was able to go from first to third on Semiens error, and score on Kinslers single. Hunter followed with a ground-rule double to make it 3-0.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: Eaton returned to the lineup after missing two games to deal with a personal matter. He led off against Price. ... With the White Sox out of the race, LHP Chris Sale will make his final start of the season on Wednesday instead of starting Tuesday and Sunday on normal rest. Ventura said that with Sale having been injured earlier this year, it made sense to ease him into the off-season.Tigers: RHP Anibal Sanchez (pectoral strain) was activated from the disabled list before Tuesdays game, and will finish the season pitching out of the bullpen. Ausmus said, because of Sanchezs outstanding pitch selection, he plans to use him in high-leverage situations.UP NEXTThe teams finish the three-game series Wednesday afternoon with Sale (12-4, 2.20) facing Justin Verlander (14-12, 4.68) in each pitchers last start of the regular season.CELEBRATING KONERKOBefore the game, the Tigers honoured Konerko by presenting him with a framed box containing a first-base bag, a jar of dirt from the right-handed batters box and a list of his accomplishments at Comerica Park. He leads all visiting players in hits, runs, total bases and RBIs since the stadium opened in 2000, and trails David Ortiz by one home run.NO ROOKIE JITTERSCarroll said that he had a great time pitching in a pennant race, even if it wasnt his team that is in contention.Thats certainly as close to a playoff game as Ive ever come, he said. As a result, Italy can now qualify a maximum of three clubs to the Champions League, whereas the top three countries can land four clubs in the lucrative competition. With fifth-place Portugal and sixth-place France not far behind Italy, this seasons showing could provide Serie A with some much-needed breathing room.In Group B, Torino finished second to Club Brugge, which edged Helsinki 2-1.Elsewhere, Dynamo Moscow become the sixth team in competition history to win all six group matches as Aleksei Ionov scored in the 90th minute for a 1-0 success at PSV Eindhoven, which went through second in Group E.None of the previous five clubs to accomplish the feat of group-stage perfection advanced past the Round of 16.Defending champion Sevilla advanced with a 1-0 win at home to Rijeka, but had to settle for second place in Group G. Denis Suarezs 20th-minute goal gave the Spaniards victory, but they remained a point behind Feyenoord, which won 3-0 at Standard Liege. In Group A, Borussia Monchengladbach and Villarreal advanced with wins over Zurich and Apollon Limassol, respectively; Dnipro claimed second inn Group F by beating St.dddddddddddd Etienne 1-0; and in Group C, Besiktas leapfrogged Tottenham for first with a 1-0 win in Turkey in a match twice delayed by lighting failure.French club Guingamp reached the knockout phase for the first time with a 2-1 win at Greek side PAOK, as Claudio Beauvue scored both goals for the visitors.Guingamp finished second to Fiorentina in Group K, even though the Tuscan side lost 2-1 at home to Dinamo Minsk. In Switzerland, Young Boys beat Sparta Prague 2-0 to overtake the visitors and qualify second to Napoli — which shut out Slovan Bratislava 3-0 — in Group I.Inter, which had already won Group F, drew 0-0 at Qarabag in Azerbaijan.Olympiakos, Liverpool, Zenit St. Petersburg, Anderlecht, Ajax, Sporting Lisbon and Athletic Bilbao also dropped down from the Champions League.Torino hadnt won a match since October — a run of four defeats and three draws — and it wasnt a promising start for the visitors when Daniel Amartey put Copenhagen ahead after just six minutes. But Josef Martinez levelled on the quarter hour. Then Mikael Antonsson was sent off on the half-hour mark and Mathias Jorgensen saw red 10 minutes later for a foul inside the area.Former Juventus forward Amauri netted the resulting penalty and then early in the second half, Martinez added another and Matteo Darmian and Gaston Silva were also on target. The goal we conceded at the start was a cold shower but we reacted well, Martinez said.Torino is 17th in Serie A, one spot above the relegation zone. Were starting to do what we want and what were capable of, which until now weve only shown glimpses of, Torino coach Giampiero Ventura said. Now if the draw gives us a tough opponent, thats more than welcome. The Round of 32 draw will be held Monday at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland. ' ' '
BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. - Business is booming in Colorados mountain resorts, and the addition of recreational marijuana stores this year has attracted customers curious about legalized pot. But theres mounting anxiety that ski towns have embraced stoner culture a little too much, potentially damaging the states tourism brand. That worry flared up in two resort towns last week. In Breckenridge, residents voted overwhelmingly to force downtowns lone dispensary off Main Street to a less-visible location. And just up the road in Granby, town officials used a property annex to prevent a dispensary from opening. The fear is that some families — a mainstay of the ski tourism industry — will stop vacationing here. Its not a morality issue, or that we think marijuana is bad, said Breckenridge councilman Gary Gallagher, who supported legal marijuana but also voted to force the Breckenridge Cannabis Club out of downtown. Marijuana, it is not in this countrys DNA yet. Its a little bit too early. So far, theres no indication that legal pot has damaged tourism, Colorados No. 2 industry. The state notched a record $17.3 billion in tourism spending the year after legalization, with a record 64.6 million visitors, and state tourism officials say 2014 is poised to top last years record. But its an open question whether pot has anything to do with it. Officials cite the improving economy and the weather, with healthy snow totals historically being the most significant driver for mountain visits. The state and its marijuana industry are barred by law from advertising weed out of state, and the head of the Colorado Tourism Office says the state isnt tracking the role of marijuana in tourist behaviour. Its all anecdotal, Al White said. I have heard from some angry parents who said theyll never come back to Colorado because of marijuana. And Ive also heard from people who say they came to Colorado just to see the marijuana. At the end of the day, it may be having a modest effect, but its not huge either way.The recent friction isnt the first time officials have moved to lower marijuanas profile. The nations largest ski operator, Vail Resorts, made headlines over the last year tearing down makeshift shelters built illicitly in hard-to-reach areas and used by stoners to get safe, mountain slang for toking up out of the cold and away from ski patrollers. Resorts across the state are dotted with the so-called smoke shacks, and some of them are decades old.We will continue to communicate that consumption of marijuana is illegal in public and on federal land, Vail Resorts Russ Pecoraro said in a statement about destroying the shacks in its four areas, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone and Vail.Still, at rates greater than their urban neighbours, mountain communities backed marijuana legalization in 2012, including Breckenridge, an early and enthusiastic support base, and theres no doubt that recreational pot has had an effect on ski towns.A state-produced July report on the new marijuana industry concluded that 90 per cent of recreational sales in mountain resort communities go to out-of-state visitors. The influx of shoppers — and camera crews that have become frequent sights as they work on pot-themed news stories and documentaries — has prompted a lively debate among residents about how pot is changing their resorts.Whether youre pro-marijuana or against marijuana, you have to be concerned about how tourists react to seeing it, said Bob Gordman, a Breckenridge retiree who voted to move the dispensary.Others say the marijuana novelty will die down naturally and that resort towns shouldnt worry about dispensaries or the souvenir shops that put Rocky Mountain High puns on T-shirts.In five or 10 years, itll be no big issue, said Bill Kiser, a Breckenridge retiree who voted to keep the dispensary on Main Street. Why dont families get turned off when they go on vacation and see a bar and people drinking alcohol? Because theyre used to it, Kiser said. People will eventually get used to this, too.___Kristen Wyatt can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/APkristenwyattJonathan Quick Jersey .J. - The New York Jets have signed former Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Graham Harrell, giving them some added depth at the position. Winning races sure has a way of easing burdens on Junior. Earnhardt turned Brad Keselowskis trash into Victory Lane treasure, pulling away down the stretch Sunday at Pocono Raceway for his second win of the season and a secured spot in the Chase field. He paired his first career win at Pocono with his Daytona 500 championship for his first multi-win season since 2004. "I feel like Im such a lucky guy to have this second opportunity again to be competitive," Earnhardt said. But for as strong as he ran in the No. 88 Chevrolet, Keselowski gift-wrapped this win when he yielded the lead with five laps left in a desperate attempt to clear debris from his grille and cool his overheated engine. Keselowskis gamble backfired -- he couldnt get the draft needed from the lapped traffic to clear his car and make one final pass for the win on Earnhardt. Keselowskis No. 2 Ford still had the oomph in the engine needed to finish the race, and he had his second-straight runner-up finish. "It was definitely a mistake because the engine made it," Keselowski said, rubbing his face. "It probably shouldnt have." Junior shook off the rising red gauges in the No. 88 that could have had his car meet a similar fate as Keselowski. "They were still within good reason to stand on it and give it hell," he said. Kurt Busch, Denny Hamlin and rookie Kyle Larson completed the top five. Earnhardt gave Hendrick Motorsports three straight wins, following back-to-back victories by Jimmie Johnson. Johnson overcame a pit road accident to finish sixth. Owner Rick Hendrick texted Earnhardt before the race to let him know he would not attend and would see him next week at Michigan. Earnhardt told him, "Ill drink one for you after its over." Earnhardt stuck to his end of the deal, spraying all types of beverages in a jubilant Victory Lane. Johnson was the first driver over to congratulate him. I dont have much to do tomorrow," Earnhardt said, grinning. "Tonights going to be a long one." Earnhardt, long NASCARs most popular driver, gave the Pocono crowd plenty of reason to go wild. He was mobbed by almost 100 fans outside the Pocono media centre, screaming his name and clamouring for a picture with the winner. He waved and ducked into a waiting car, whisked away for another party. Maybe the fans should try tweeting at him to earn his attention. AA reluctant participant on Twitter for years, Earnhardt warmed fast to the social media site after winning Daytona.ddddddddddddHe said he underestimated the amount of fun hed have interacting with fans. He loved the "go get ems" that dot his feed, though its the "haters" that he really feeds off. "The real short ones, like, You suck, those are the best ones," he said, smiling. "I just favourite them and block them. Its so much fun." Earnhardts second win means he is guaranteed to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship field. He won for the 29th time in 519 career Sprint Cup starts. "When we won at Daytona, man, it made the rest of the year a lot more relaxing, a lot easier," he said. "It makes it fun because you can just go to the track and just race, not worry about points." Juniors breakthrough was more meaningful because has come in crew chief Steve Letartes final season. Letarte, who had a Pocono win with Jeff Gordon, has become one of Earnhardts best friends. That tightness off the track just may have sparked the wins on the track. "Maybe thats why him and I are such good friends, because I might be the only one in the world that doesnt wonder what its like to be Dale Junior," Letarte said. "Hes a normal guy, hes a great guy, hes a great talent. I dont have any idea what its like to be him." Earnhardt led three Hendrick drivers in the top 10; Gordon finished eighth. Johnsons bid for a third straight victory was derailed when he connected on pit road with Marcos Ambrose. Coming off wins in the Coca-Cola 600 and at Dover, Johnson was fifth when he pitted under yellow. Johnson hit Ambrose and spun 180-degrees, which forced him to back into his stall for more repairs. He needed two tires, had right-front damage and dropped to 29th on the restart. Busch posted his first top 10 since his win at Martinsville nine races ago. He salvaged a rough day for his team that saw fellow Stewart-Haas Racing drivers Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick drop from contention with various issues. Stewart held the lead and was in great position late to win until he was busted for speeding on pit road and was dropped to 31st. Harvick was running second when had tire trouble. Stewart finished 13th, Harvick 14th, and SHRs Danica Patrick was 37th after she smacked the wall with 22 laps left. All those mishaps -- and one loose wrapper -- all made it a race to remember for Earnhardt. "A year or two ago, we werent running to seize the opportunity," Earnhardt said, "and now we are." ' ' '
