BOSTON -- A day of treatment after getting hit by a pitch may have put Conor Gillaspie back on track. He hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer for his third hit of the game and the Chicago White Sox beat the struggling Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Tuesday night. "Sometimes you can benefit by getting hurt and getting a day off and recharging," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "Hes swinging the bat fine. Running, Im sure, hes still sore." Gillaspie could just trot around the bases when his second homer of the season gave the White Sox a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning. Two days earlier, a pitch from Dominic Leone hit him in the right leg in the fifth inning of Chicagos 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. Gillaspie bruised his right knee and left for a pinch runner, then missed Chicagos 4-0 win over Boston on Monday night. "Obviously, it was a little bit sore," he said, "but I think getting treatment a whole entire day, 10 hours worth of treatment, I think it helped everything for me." He went 3 for 4 after going 4 for 29 in his previous nine games. "I was fortunate it missed my knee for the most part," Gillaspie said. Boston snapped Chicago pitchers streak of 22 scoreless innings but lost for the seventh time in eight games as the defending World Series champions remained in last place in the AL East. "Were just not very consistent," Red Sox catcher David Ross said. "When we do score runs, we havent pitched the way we wanted to, and when we pitched the way we need to we havent scored runs." The White Sox are 5-1 in their last six games, allowing three runs or less in all six with a scoring margin of 25-9. John Danks (8-6) started with four shutout innings on Tuesday night after Hector Noesi beat Seattle on Sunday and Scott Carroll won on Monday night when Boston had just two hits. The White Sox squandered a 3-0 lead when the Red Sox tied it with three runs in the fifth. But Chicago went ahead with two in the sixth and then added three in the ninth. Jose Abreu started the sixth with a single against Brandon Workman (1-3). With two outs, Gillaspie hit a 3-and-2 pitch just inside the right-field pole. He had singled, doubled and scored a run earlier. Abreu had two doubles and a single and has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. Chicago added three run-scoring extra-base hits in the ninth -- a triple by Alejandro De Aza and doubles by Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko. The White Sox took a 2-0 lead with unearned runs in the second. They loaded the bases on a walk to Adam Dunn and singles by Alexei Ramirez and Gillaspie. Dunn scored on an error by first baseman Mike Napoli and Ramirez came in when De Aza grounded into a double play. Napoli appeared to be trying to transfer the ball from his glove to his right hand to throw home for a force play. "Any time you give extra outs, youre asking for trouble," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "Over the past five games weve given up a number of extra outs that have led to runs." Chicago made it 3-0 in the fourth when Gillaspie doubled and scored on a single by De Aza. The Red Sox, the lowest-scoring team in the American League, failed to score after loading the bases in the first and fourth. They finally got to Danks, 5-1 in his last seven starts, in the fifth. Brock Holt tripled when centre fielder De Aza let the ball get behind him after he raced in and dived for it. Dustin Pedroia and Napoli followed with run-scoring doubles and Xander Bogaerts tied it with an RBI single. But Danks ended the threat by striking out the next two batters. "Sharp or not, I was able to make a pitch when I needed to," he said. NOTES: Ross threw out two runners trying to steal second -- De Aza in the fourth and Adam Eaton in the fifth. ... Chicagos streak of six games allowing three runs or less is its longest since seven straight from May 2-9, 2011. ... John Isner, the top-seeded player at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, threw out a ceremonial first pitch. ... Chris Sale (8-1) pitches for Chicago on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game series against Rubby De La Rosa (2-2). Farrell said he would be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Gicquel moves on to face sixth-seeded Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who advanced with a 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) win against wild card Pierre-Hugues Herbert, despite the Frenchmans 23 aces. Riley Nash Jersey . "If we could score a six in every game, obviously I would be pretty excited," Jones said. "Its a long week but a short week. NEW YORK – The aftertaste of two stinging overtime losses in L.A. remained bitter for Henrik Lundqvist and the Rangers on the long flight back home to New York. "I personally use it as motivation," Lundqvist said on Monday morning, his team trailing the Kings by a dire 2-0 deficit heading into Game 3 at MSG. "You get upset and frustrated and disappointed when you lose. But you just have to respond the right way." The right response would be victory on home ice and some hope for a crowd that hasnt witnessed a Stanley Cup Final game in 20 years. Heavy underdogs coming into their first Final since 1994, the Rangers have, at the very least, demonstrated their ability to crash, bang and skate with the Kings. A bounce or two in their favour in Games 1 and 2 – not to mention a different ruling on a controversial third Kings goal – and this series could look quite different as the series shifts back East, but as it stands, they find themselves at the very edge of a near-inescapable hole. "We have to start winning and thats tonight," said Lundqvist, who has allowed eight goals on 87 shots in the Final. "I hope its going to be an exciting feeling to step out on the ice here; home crowd, great atmosphere; take advantage of that; enjoy the moment but at the same time, really push ourselves here to try to play our best game so far." New York has done its fair share of good in the Final so far despite the gaping series deficit. Packed with plenty of speed and punch, they raced out to 2-0 leads in both Games 1 and 2 only to come undone at the mercy of the resilient Kings en route to a pair of heartbreaking overtime losses – the latter in double overtime. Theyve done enough, however, to believe that this series is far from over. "Chance-wise, were right there with them," said head coach Alain Vigneault, ever optimistic hours before Game 3. "Weve played some good hockey. We got a little bit unfortunate in that last third period, but were right there and we feel real good about our game. "Things always even themselves out with the right effort and the right attitude. You say if you work hard, luck will come with you, well were working hard; were working our butts off here. Im very confident that were going to have that same type of effort here tonight and were going to be real good." History is not on their side. All but five of the 48 teams whove earned a 2-0 series lead in the Final (since 1939) have gone on to capture the Cup. Among those five, interestingly enough, were the Vigneault-led Canucks in 2011, Vancouver falling in seven games to Boston despite the commanding early series lead. The Kings are proof themselves that momentum can change quickly. They rallied furiously from a 3-0 series ditch in the opening round against San Jose, adding two more Game 7 victories along the way. "I think the key is to realize that were close and you dont have to change that much," said Lundqvist. "The difference has been a bounce here or a deflection. Were doing a lot of good things, but it hasnt been enough so we need to raise [our level] a little bit. But its important that you dont try too hard and try too many different things. We need to stick together here and do it together. We had stretches in both games where I think we played really well and created a lot of chances, enough chances to win the game." Al Harrington, another former Knicks forward, scored 22 of his 24 points after halftime for the Nuggets, allowing them to withstand Anthonys attempt to rally the Knicks after his poor shooting had them behind until the final minutes of regulation. Orchard Park, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - After just one season at the position, Jim Schwartz is out as Bills defensive coordinator. Schwartz, formerly the head coach of the Detroit Lions, was tabbed to lead Buffalos defense after his successor, Mike Pettine, who ran the defense for the 2013 season, left to become Clevelands head coach. I have the utmost respect for Jim and what he has been able to accomplish throughout his career and I know he feels the same about me. Jims defenses are always tough and ranked near the top of the league standings, said new Bills head coach Rex Ryan in announcing the move on Tuesday. I wanted to give Jim the opportunity to pursue other opportunities and so we have terminated his contract. He did a terrific job with the Bills defense this past year and our plan is for our defense to continue to play well and be a dominating force. Under Schwartz, Buffalo ranked fourth in fewest points allowed (289), third in passing yards allowed per game (205.8) and 11th in rushing yards allowed per game (106.4). Nelson, who caught 85 passes for 1,314 yards last season, both career bests, said he doesnt know if his agent, Vann McElroy, and the Packers have had any meaningful conversations about an extension. "Hes not going to just bug me with it," he said. "Hell let me know when it gets close." The last time Nelson, a second-round pick in 2008, was in a contract year was in 2011, when he signed a three-year, $13.989 million extension in October. That deal included $5 million in guaranteed money, including a $3.5 million signing bonus. That deal paid Nelson a base salary of $2.7 million last year, and calls for him to make a base salary of $3.05 million in 2014. In terms of annual average salary, Nelson currently ranks 34th on the wide receiver pay scale league-wide entering 2014. But he indicated Tuesday that hes anxious to get a new deal simply because he wants the peace of mind. "You want it done so you and your family are comfortable, you want it done so you dont have to worry about it," he said. "I think on both sides. They get it done they can start working on someone else.ddddddddddddquot; That someone else is fourth-year wide receiver Randall Cobb, a second-round pick in 2011 who is going into the final year of his rookie deal. Cobb missed 10 games last season with a leg injury, but he returned in time to catch the playoffs-clinching touchdown pass from Aaron Rodgers on a fourth-down play at Chicago in the regular-season finale last year. "Im not a businessman so I dont really know that side of it," Cobb said of his situation. "Thats what I have an agent for - for him to handle that kind of thing. Thats for the Packers to decide and figure out." It appears Nelson is the priority, and after Chicagos Brandon Marshall signed a four-year, $39.3 million extension ($22.3 million guaranteed) with the Bears last month, Nelsons market should be set. Marshall caught 100 passes for 1,295 yards and 12 TDs last season for the Bears. Marshall turned 30 in March; Nelson turned 29 last week. Asked if he feels additional pressure in a contract year, Nelson replied, "No. I dont think so, not at all. I didnt feel that last time, and I dont think Ill feel it this time. I think were a long ways from that anyway. Weve got a few months to hopefully work on that and get it taken care of. I think well be fine." tshot the Jets 31-27, the first ttime in MADRID, Spain -- Olympiakos and Bayer Leverkusen reached the last 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, with either Juventus or Galatasaray set to join them after their match in Istanbul was abandoned because of a snowstorm. Match officials stopped play after 31 minutes, ruling the field was too dangerous to play on. The last hour will now be played on Wednesday, kicking off at 3pm local time (1300 GMT). Olympiakos beat 8-man Anderlecht 3-1 to advance, edging out two-time champion Benfica, whose 2-1 victory over Paris St. Germain was not enough. Leverkusen won 1-0 at Real Sociedad to finish behind Group A winner Manchester United, which beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0. Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score nine times in group play as the Portugal forwards 26th goal of the season helped carry Real Madrid to a 2-0 victory at Copenhagen to wrap up Group B. "Were first in the group, the team played very well on a very bad pitch," Ronaldo said. "I scored a goal and Im happy that I can help the team." Manchester City finally managed to secure a victory over a European heavyweight, coming from behind to win 3-2 at Bayern Munich to end the defending champions record winning streak at 10 games. City fell one goal shy of taking Group D over Bayern on head-to-head results after the clubs finished tied on 15 points. Bayern charged into a 2-0 lead by the 12th minute at the Allianz Arena before David Silva began the rally with a 28th-minute goal. City was inspired by the Spain midfielder and, after Aleksandar Kolarov equalized from the penalty spot, James Milner side footed home a low screamer to secure the win in the 62nd. "This is a very important result for us," City coach Manuel Pellegrini said. Back in Manchester, Phil Jones scored in the 67th minute at Old Trafford as United continued to find its form in Europe while it struggles domestically. Uniteds victory helped Leverkusen, which won through Omer Topraks second-half goal, as it condemned Shakhtar to a place in the Europa League after finishing third in the group. Benfica joins Shakhtar in Europes second-tier competition despite rallying from Edinson Cavanis 37th-minute opener for Group C winner PSG. Lima converted a penalty on the stroke of halftime and Nicolas Gaitan scored from Maxi Pereiras diverted cross in the 58th, but the result wasnt enough for the Portuguese team because of the result across the continent in Greece. Javier Saviola scored two goals for Olympiakos but was shaking his head in the 50th with the score at 1-1 when Anderlecht goalkeeper Silvio Proto saved his penalty. Saviola made up for that miss eight minutes later after swiveling to stab home his second for 2-1. "Everything counts more in the Champions league: scoring, winning, celebrating," Saviola said. "So this is a great moment." Proto stopped another penalty before being the third Andrlecht player sent off three minutes into stoppage time. Substitute Alejandro Dominguez beat outfield player Aleksandar Mitrovic -- who filled in for Proto. After a slow start, Madrid is certainly showing its mettle as a title favourite. The team extended its unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games, despite Ronaldo also having a second-half penalty saved. Luka Modric got nine-time champion Madrid going with an exquisitely taken shot from just outside the area in the 25th, and Madrid never looked back with Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema running the attack. "Today I wanted to score, like every game. Every goal is important to help the team win and today it was extra special to break the record," said Ronaldo, who had been sidelined over two weeks with a hamstring injury. "But I dont think about records. The principal objective is to win trophies." Madrid topped Group B with 16 points. Juventus needs just a draw against Galatasaray to advance, while the Turkish club needs a win. Also in Group D, substitute Tomas Wagner volleyed home a 90th-minute winner as Viktoria Plzen sealed its place in the Europa League with a 2-1 victory against nine-man CSKA Moscow. Ahmed Musa headed CSKA ahead in the 65th but Daniel Kolar nodded home an equalizer after Alan Dzagoev was red carded. CSKA midfielder Pontus Wernbloom was sent off moments after Wagner ensured coach Pavel Vrbas last Champions League game in charge of the club before he takes over the Czech Republic was a memorable one. Corey Kluber Jersey . City has reached new heights under manager Manuel Pellegrini as they transition from big spending/immediate impact to perennial contender. Yaya Toures seeming discontent Tuesday may complicate that, as does the little issue of Financial Fair Play. Francisco Lindor Jersey . Rudy Gay made the tying basket in regulation and a 3-pointer in overtime that gave Sacramento the lead for good, and Fredette scored a career-high 24 points to help the Kings beat the Knicks 106-101 on Wednesday night.Scott Cullen takes a look at the stories from December 26th through January 2nd, including not-so-happy holidays in New Jersey, an Oilers-Penguins trade, World Juniors, contract extensions and more. DEBOER FIRED A Merry Christmas to former New Jersey Devils coach Peter DeBoer, who was relieved of his duties on Boxing Day, with GM Lou Lamoriello taking over behind the bench, with Adam Oates and Scott Stevens in charge of the forwards and defence, respectively. In 251 games with the Devils, DeBoer compiled a 115-95-41 record (.540 points percentage) and made it to the Stanley Cup Final, losing to the Los Angeles Kings, in 2012. In 251 games, the Devils had strong possession numbers (52.5% of even-strength shot attempts in that span ranks sixth), but it has been undone by poor (shooting and save) percentages at both ends of the rink. It’s hard to look at the Devils’ current roster – old and lacking top-end talent – and not pin the blame for their slide on Lamoriello, general manager, more than DeBoer, the coach. PERRON TRADE The Pittsburgh Penguins have been seeking a scoring winger for most of the season and pulled the trigger to acquire David Perron from Edmonton, a team that has begun planning, in earnest, for 2015-16. In this case, it means the Oilers moving out a proven scoring winger with a year-and-a-half left on his contract, in the hopes that they will secure future value from a first-round pick and whatever they might receiver from Rob Klinkhammer, a bruising winger with an expiring contract. At this moment, the Penguins have improved and ought to be Cup contender, while the Oilers have gotten worse and set their sights on a top draft pick. U.S. ELIMINATED FROM WORLD JUNIORS They might well have been the second-best team in the tournament, but after losing to Canada on New Year’s Eve, Team USA was bounced from the medal round when they lost 3-2 to Russia. Such is the peril of a single-elimination tournament. Take some penalties – as the Americans did (eight minor penalties, including seven in the first half of the game) – and run into a hot goalie (Team USA outshot the Russians 41-25) – as the Americans did – and suddenly very realistic hopes of a gold medal are gone. Dylan Larkin, a first-round pick of the Red Wings in 2014, was a standout in the tournament for USA, scoring five goals and seven points in five games, while Jack Eichel, the prospect battling Connor McDavid for top spot in the 2015 Draft, had a goal and four points for the Americans. WORLD JUNIOR LEADERS As always, the World Junior Hockey Championship is a great showcase for young hockey talent and some top prospects are off the terrific starts in this year’s tournament. Canada’s Sam Reinhart, the No. 2 overall pick by Buffalo last summer, has eight points (3 G, 5 A) in four preliminary games to hold an early edge on William Nylander (No. 8 to Toronto), Larkin (No. 15 to Detroit) and David Pastrnak (No. 25 to Boston), who all had seven points. Reinhart’s linemate, Max Domi (No. 13 to Arizona in 2013), Nic Petan (2013 second-round pick to Winnipeg) and Sweden’s Oskar Lindblom (2014 fifth-round pick to Philadelphia) also had seven points. Swedish defenceman Gustav Forsling, a 2014 fifth-round pick of Vancouver, was the top scoring defenceman with six points through the preliminary round. FOLIGNO CASHES IN Enjoying a career year in Columbus, left winger Nick Foligno signed a six-year, $33-million contract extension with the Blue Jackets. Foligno would have been an unrestricted free agent, in a shallow market, in the offseason, but it’s impossible to turn down a deal offering that kind of long-term security. Foligno has 17 goals and 32 points in 34 games this season, easily the best per-game scoring rates of his career and with a career-high 22.1% shooting percentage, he’s almost assureed to regress.dddddddddddd It’s possible that Foligno can provide fair value as a top-six forward over the next few seasons, but once he’s past 30, which is more than half of this deal, it seems less likely that he will produce enough to justify $5.5-million per season. SO DOES BJUGSTAD The Florida Panthers also extended a frontline player with a new six-year, $24.6-million contract for centre Nick Bjugstad, signing the 22-year-old centre to a six-year, $24.6-million extension. He’s the Panthers’ leading scorer, with a modest 21 points (13 G, 8 A) in 35 games this season, but he’s driving play while starting more than half of his shifts in the defensive zone, a good sign at a young age that he can handle tough minutes. While the Blue Jackets’ deal for Foligno looks like it’s born out of optimism that he can maintain unsustainable percentages, Bjugstad is finishing more (13.7 SH%) this year, but his on-ice shooting percentage (7.7%) is still rather modest and likely to get better with more skilled linemates over time. That this contract covers relatively early years of Bjugstad’s career, leading into his prime, make it more likely that he will produce enough to justify the price. The deal also covers mostly restricted free agent seasons, along with a couple of years in which Bjugstad would be unrestricted. When this contract expires, and he’s a 29-year-old unrestricted free agent, there will still be an opportunity to sign another lucrative deal, so long as he continues his currently promising career arc. NEW OWNER FOR COYOTES It can get exhausting keeping track of who is in charge of the Arizona Coyotes from one year to the next. The latest to hold a majority ownership stake is Andrew Barroway, a hedge fund manager who agreed to purchase a 51% ownership stake for $155-million. That would put the price of the Coyotes franchise around $300-million, which is more than the $225-million that Forbes had for Coyotes in their most recent valuations. The deal still requires the approval of the NHL Board of Governors. CROWDED CREASE IN ST. LOUIS When the St. Louis Blues decided to sign veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur – following an injury to starter Brian Elliott – that opened up the possibility that the Blues would have three NHL goaltenders under contract once Elliott was healthy and, after nearly five weeks on the sidelines, Elliott is back. Brodeur has a .904 save percentage in six games with the Blues, which would hardly qualify for a significant role going forward, but 24-year-old Jake Allen (.899 SV%) has also struggled. The trouble is that Allen would need to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL and it seems unlikely that he would get through, so the Blues are carrying three goalies for the time being. WASHINGTON WINS THE WINTER CLASSIC Maybe the TV ratings weren’t what they had hoped and the buzz leading up to the outdoor game between the Chicago Blackhawks and Washington Capitals wasn’t quite to the same level as previous Winter Classics, but more than 42,000 fans took in a well-played, competitive game on New Year’s Day in Washington, D.C. Washington’s Troy Brouwer, a former Blackhawk, scored the winning goal with 13 seconds remaining in the third period – a power-play goal after a questionable penalty call on Blackhawks superstar Jonathan Toews. JOHNNY BE GOOD Named the NHL Rookie of the Month for December, after scoring 13 points (8 G, 5 A) in 14 games, Flames left winger Johnny Gaudreau has shown that size isn’t everything. Since starting this season with no points and one shot on goal in his first give games, Gaudreau has put up 30 points (12 G, 18 A) in the past 33 games and is now the only viable challenger for Filip Forsberg, who has 35 points, in the rookie scoring race. "It was knickerbockers vs. lederhosen today," Norway curler Christoffer Svae said. "And the knickerbockers won." China defeated Switzerland 5-4 for its third win without a loss. Sweden, also 3-0, had a bye in the morning session at the Ice Cube Curling Center. The U.S. men and women were a combined 0-5 after two days play, but John Shusters team ended the losing streak by beating Denmark 9-5, with five of its points coming from steals. "Getting a win was huge both for our team and for the state of curling as far as our country goes," Shuster said. Shuster said the arrival of his wife Sarah and 9-month-old son Luke in Sochi on Tuesday sparked an improvement in his performance, after disappointing losses to Norway and China. "I got a text message from my wife last night that helped me get in a much better mindset," he said. "She just told me to remember to enjoy this and be a curler, because you are out here doing something that you have fun doing. "It really changed my complete being." There are four games in the evening session, including Canada vs. Russia and Denmark vs. Sweden. The Canadians (1-2) have made an underwhelming start to the defense of their title. Norway caused a stir in the Vancouver Games in 2010 by donning diamond-printed pants for their matches instead of the usual black curling trousers that most teams wear. In Sochi, the Norwegians have gone a step further and unleashed their new, bold range of clothing on the Germans. The cap -- known as a sixpence -- is Norwegian-patterned with different colors and different shapes. The socks are exactly the same type worn by Norways soccer players. The pattern on the knickers was sharp red-and-blue teeth. Norway, the 2010 silver medalist, has now beaten the U.S., Russia and Germany -- "probably the three weakest teams of the tournament," according to Svae. "We play Sweden tomorrow," he added. "Well get a first real test." The U.S. slipped behind 3-0 after the first end but responded with a deuce and then stole points in the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 8th ends, keeping the Danes scoreless until the 9th. "Hopefully this turns the tables," Shuster said, "and we can get it rolling in the other direction." Cheap Dolphins Jerseys China . Smiths up-and-down rookie season ended with four solid games as the Jets finished 8-8, but out of the playoffs. Both coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik have said that while Smith improved greatly, they will wait until they see whos on the roster in a few months before considering their starters at any position. "It motivates me," Smith told The Associated Press on Friday. "I know Rex, and he knows how to push my buttons. Im definitely going to go into this season as I always do: with a chip on my shoulder with that edge." Smith was in midtown Manhattan serving fans from an ice cream truck as part of a promotional event for New Era caps — a few hours after Ryan did the same. Smith, who had 12 touchdown passes and 21 interceptions, is expected to be in the quarterback mix whether the Jets sign a veteran or draft someone to compete with him. But, it appears he didnt do enough for the Jets to anoint him the starter as they head into the off-season. "Ive gotten better, but Ive got a long ways to go," Smith acknowledged. "Ive got to continue to progress and Im going to take this year just as I took last year, and thats to try to get better every single day." Smith declined to comment on his recent off-field issues, which included a disagreement with a flight attendant at Los Angeles International airport, for which Virgin America airline later apologized. "Nah, were not talking about that stuff,," he said.dddddddddddd Taking a quick break from handing out ice cream cones on Super Bowl Boulevard in Times Square, Smith talked about how much he enjoyed seeing the area jam-packed with football fans getting ready for the NFLs biggest game Sunday at MetLife Stadium. It also reminded him of his ultimate goal on the field. "Just being here and being around this atmosphere has definitely made me even more hungry," he said. "Just to get into this position has been something Ive been longing for my entire life, so I just want to work toward it." Smith started all 16 games for the Jets after claiming the job once Mark Sanchez went down for the season with a shoulder injury in the preseason. There were flashes from Smith at times, particularly with four winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime of the Jets first seven games. But there were also troubling stretches, such as the seven-game stretch midway through the season in which he had one touchdown pass and 11 interceptions. While Smith insisted "I dont do grades," he said he learned a lot on the job — a crash course in life in the NFL that not many rookie quarterbacks get to experience. "It was very valuable, man," Smith said. "Not only from the standpoint of being on the field, but off the field. All the emotions I had to go through and all the good and bad things I had to go through, and ultimately, it strengthened me. "It made me a better player and made me a better person off the field." ___ AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.orgCheap Buffalo Sabres GearWholesale Calgary Flames JerseysCheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche JerseysMontreal Canadiens Outlet StoreWholesale New Jersey Devils JerseysAdidas Arizona Coyotes JerseysCheap Adidas Boston Bruins JerseysCheap Adidas Carolina Hurricanes JerseysChicago Blackhawks Shop Free ShippingWholesale Columbus Blue Jackets JerseysDallas Stars Shop Free ShippingCheap Adidas Detroit Red Wings JerseysAnaheim Ducks Jerseys ChinaWholesale Edmonton Oilers JerseysFlorida Panthers Shop Free ShippingWholesale Los Angeles Kings JerseysMinnesota Wild Outlet StoreCheap Adidas Nashville Predators JerseysCheap Adidas New York Islanders JerseysNew York Rangers Winter Classic JerseysCheap Adidas Ottawa Senators JerseysCheap Adidas Philadelphia Flyers JerseysWholesale Pittsburgh Penguins JerseysCheap Adidas San Jose Sharks JerseysSt. Louis Blues Winter Classic JerseysWholesale Tampa Bay Lightning JerseysToronto Maple Leafs Outlet StoreVancouver Canucks Outlet StoreCheap Adidas Vegas Golden Knights JerseysCheap Adidas Washington Capitals JerseysCheap Adidas Winnipeg Jets Jerseys ' ' '
TORONTO -- The Canadian Football League has imposed its maximum fine on Montreal Alouettes linebacker Kyries Hebert following an illegal and extremely dangerous tackle while trying to dislodge the football from his opponent. Hebert was penalized on the play and ejected from the game. "We are committed to fostering a culture of health and safety in all we do as a league, including the standards we set through player discipline," said Mark Cohon, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League. A hearing took place earlier today that included Hebert, representation from Canadian Football League Players Association (CFLPA), and representation from the CFL including Cohon. Following the hearing and after reviewing the play on video from every available angle, the Commissioner has decided to impose the highest fine allowed under its collective bargaining agreement with the CFLPA, the equivalent of half of a players game cheque. The CFL also announced today the following discipline arising out of Week One of play: Edmonton Eskimo Thaddeus Coleman has been fined for hitting an opponent (with his arm) in the back of the head. Calgary Stampeder Corey Mace has been fined for delivering a punch. Saskatchewan Roughrider Rob Bagg has been fined for delivering a punch. Hamilton Tiger-Cat Craig Butler has been fined for using his helmet to deliver a blow to an opponents helmet. As per league policy, fine amounts are not disclosed. Frank Gore Jersey . What general manager Dave Nonis called "short and productive" negotiations ended with Kessel signing a US$64-million, eight-year contract on Tuesday. The deal has a salary cap hit of $8 million per season. It begins in 2014-15 and runs through the 2021-22 season. "Ill be on the hook for some team dinners here or there, but I dont mind," Kessel said at a news conference before Tuesday nights season opener at Montreal. "I always wanted to be (in Toronto). "This is the place I want to play. I want to finish my career here. Its a great city, the organizations unbelievable, and Im really excited to continue here." The contract includes a limited no-trade clause. Kessel has one season left on his previous deal at $5.4 million. General manager Dave Nonis said negotiations started last week when Kessel, who could have become an unrestricted free agent next July, told him he wanted to remain a Leaf. "There werent negotiations early in camp," said Nonis. "I wanted to hear him tell me he wanted to be a Toronto Maple Leaf and once he did, we were able to work quickly and reach an agreement." Kessel reportedly wanted either to sign a deal before the season or wait until the summer. The speedy right-winger had 20 goals and 52 points in 48 games last season. He has 379 points (185-194) in 504 regular-season games over seven seasons with Toronto and Boston. The six-foot, 202-pound native of Madison, Wis., has 21 points (13-8) in 22 career playoff games. He had four goals, including two game-winners, in Torontos seven-game, first-round playoff loss to the Bruins last season. "I think Phil made some great strides in that series," Nonis said. "He had a great year. Hes had several great years. Thats the one thing I think people overlook." Kessel also played for the United States at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. The two-time all-star, who will turn 26 on Wednesday, was drafted by the Bruins with the fifth overall pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft. He was dealt to Toronto four years ago for two first-round picks and a second-round selection. The Bruins used the picks to draft Tyler Seguin, Dougie Hamilton and Jared Knight. This summer, Seguin was sent to Dallas in a multi-player deal that sent Loui Eriksson to Boston.dddddddddddd The Kessel deal was widely seen as a coup for Boston, but Nonis said the Leafs have no regrets. "Were happy with Phil and weve always been happy with his production," he said. "You forget how young a player he was when he got here. "Hes got a lot of quality years ahead of him. Thats why we were very comfortable going to a eight-year term with him." Not one to enjoy the spotlight, Kessels quiet demeanour has sometimes been taken for aloofness, something Nonis vigorously denies. "The one knock that Phil had on him, that I think was totally unfair, is that he wasnt a great teammate," Nonis said. "Thats completely untrue. "Hes quiet, maybe hes not outgoing as some of the people in a Canadian market would like, but hes a great teammate. Hes well liked by everybody in our room." Forward Joffrey Lupul, who is also signed to a long-term deal with the Leafs, applauded the signing. "Obviously, everyones excited," said Lupul. "Hes certainly our most talented player and his games come a long way since Ive been here. "Ive got to see him involved as a player and as a person and its nothing but good news to have him locked up long term." Lupul is signed for the next five seasons at $5.25 million per year. Toronto also recently signed free agent David Clarkson for seven years at $5.52 million annually along with centre Tyler Bozak for five years with a $4.2-million annual cap hit. There are several other players due to become unrestricted free agents next July, including team captain Dion Phaneuf. Nonis said he would look at getting other players signed, but was in no hurry. "We address everybody individually," he said. "I wouldnt say were going to have a monthly announcement on signing free agents." Kessel was suspended for the final three games of the pre-season after he slashed Buffalo Sabres tough guy John Scott in a game last month. The Leafs also said Tuesday that James Reimer will start in goal against the Canadiens, with off-season acquisition Jonathan Bernier as his backup. "Its good,"said Reimer. "You always want to be the guy that starts it off." When the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season began in January, Reimer was passed over for the opening night starting job in favour of Ben Scrivens. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Roenis Elias came through with another positive start to follow up his first complete game. Elias won his second consecutive start, Dustin Ackley drove in three runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-4 on Saturday. Elias (5-4), coming off a three-hit shutout over Detroit last Sunday, was chased after giving up a two-run homer in the eighth to Evan Longoria that cut the Mariners lead to 7-4. The left-hander allowed four runs and five hits over 7 2-3 innings. "I felt really good out there," Elias said through an interpreter. "Im doing what Im capable of doing. Im working hard to keep that going." Elias struck out five and walked two. "I really liked what I saw today," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "Probably left him in a little bit too long." Ackley hit a three-run double off Alex Cobb (1-4) during a four-run fifth that put the Mariners ahead 7-2. Willie Bloomquist added an RBI double in the inning. "Thats huge," Ackley said of getting Elias the five-run lead. "At point hes throwing the ball well anyway. To have that kind of insurance definitely helps him." Fernando Rodney, the former Rays closer, pitched the ninth to get his 17th save in his first appearance at Tropicana Field since joining the Mariners as a free agent in February. James Loney homered for the Rays, who had a stopped a 10-game losing streak by beating Seattle 4-0 Friday night. The Rays celebrated the life of senior adviser Don Zimmer before the game. Zimmer died Wednesday night at 83. Joe Torre, Jim Leyland and Tommy Lasorda, along with more than 20 family members were present. "It was very emotional," said McClendon, who played for Zimmer on the 1989 NL East champion Chicago Cubs. "I thought it was very on." Bloomquist had an RBI single and Endy Chavez hit a sacrifice fly during the fourth. Cole Gillespie hit his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the second. It was Gillespies first homer since Sept. 28, 2011, while with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seattle has won five of six. Cobb gave up seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1-3 innings. SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Archie Goodwin scored 12 of his career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter and the Phoenix Suns defeated the Sacramento Kings 104-99 Wednesday night in the season finale for both teams. The Suns outscored the Kings 33-25 in the fourth quarter to snap a three-game losing streak. Goodwin, a rookie guard with little playing time this season, made a jumper to put the Suns ahead for good with 3:49 left in the game. Marcus Morris had 10 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter for the Suns. Twin Markieff Morris scored 15 points and Gerald Green 12. Phoenix played without guard Goran Dragic (sore left ankle), who led the Suns in scoring and assists. Ben McLemore had 31 points and five assists, both career highs, for the Kings, who lost for the sixth time in seven games while playing starters Rudy Gay and Isaiah Thomas limited minutes. Travis Outlaw had 15 points and Ray McCallum 13. It was a disappointing season for the Suns (48-34), who missed the playoffs despite a dramatic turnaround under rookie coach Jeff Hornacek after winning 25 games a year ago. Only the Suns and Golden State (2007-08) have won 48 games and failed to make the playoffs since the NBA went to the 16-team playoff format. After winning nine of 11 and moving into seventh last week in the Western Conference, the Suns dropped three straight games in a four-night span. The Memphis Grizzlies clinched the last available playoff berth Monday night in Phoenix, eliminating the Suns with a 97-91 victory. Sacramento was without leading scorer and rebounder DeMarcus Cousins. He was called for a technical foul in Sundays victory over Minnesota and drew an automatic one-game suspension for getting his 16th technical foul of the season. It was another lacklustre season for the Kings (28-53), who matched their win total from last year and failed to make the playoffs for an eighth straight season. Goodwin converted on three-point play to give the Suns a 92-87 lead midway through the fourth quarter. After the Kings tied the score, Goodwin made a layup and a 3, putting Phoenix ahead 99-94. The Kings shared the ball and shot 50 per cent in the third quarter to take a 74-71 lead into the fourth. McLemore, who has experienced a difficult first season, surpassed his previous career-high of 18 points when he hit a 3 at the 10-minute mark in the third quarter. NEW YORK -- Frustrated with the lack of playing time in his first year in the NBA last season, Brooklyn Nets reserve forward Mirza Teletovic stayed composed and patient. Now with a chance to contribute, Teletovic is coming up big for the Nets. Teletovic scored 24 of his career-high 34 points in the second quarter and the Nets held on to beat the Dallas Mavericks 107-106 Friday night for their fourth straight win. "Confidence is very important. With the confidence its so much easier to make shots, to move around, to play and do anything on the court," said Teletovic, who shot 12 for 18 from the field including 7 of 11 beyond the 3-point arc. "I think its very important to have patience and wait for your moment. You have to be ready when your name is called. If youre not ready, you cant do anything." The Nets improved to an NBA best 9-1 in January. "I think just the opportunity for him playing, but also his work ethic," coach Jason Kidd said. "He just doesnt show up on game day shooting. Hes been working extremely hard at this game. I think also, a big credit goes to his teammates because they believe in him. As much as coaches believe in him, his teammates in that locker room believe that hes going to do the right thing when he has the ball." Paul Pierce had 12 points and Kevin Garnett added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Brooklyn, which has won seven straight at home, a season-high. Former Net Vince Carter had 19 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 18 points for the Mavs, who lost their second straight game. Brooklyn almost blew a 11-point lead after Teletovic hit a 3-pointer to make it 100-89 with 4:35 left in the fourth quarter. Dallas then mounted a late rally, going on an 11-5 run to close in within two points with 8.1 seconds left in the game. Deron Williams, who came off the bench for the third straight game and posted 18 points and dished out 11 assists, hit one of two free throws to extend the Nets lead to 103-98 with 27.3 left. The Mavs cut the lead down to 103-100 after Donta Ellis made a layup and Brooklyn was able to quickly increase it to 105-100 after Ellis sent Pierce to the free throw line for a pair of successful shots. Shawn Marion managed to bring Dallas within three points after two free throws with 10.8 left to make it 105-102. Nowitzki then got fouled by Pierce. He hit the first free throw that made it 105-103 but missed the second attempt. Pierce and Andrei Kirilenko each hit a pair of free throws to make it a 107-103 game before Ellis hit a 3-point before time expired. Brooklyn forced 15 turnovers and scored 23 points off of them. "When you give up 23 points off turnovers in a one possession game, its another story teller of the reason we lost," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We were just poor defensively. Mirza Teletovic hit his first couple of shots and we just let him keep going and you just cant do that." Nowitzki shot 5 for 15 from the field and hit just two 3-pointer in eight attempts, crediting his former teammate, Kidd, who was on the 2011 Dallas championship team, with the game plan that had him off throughout the night. "They didnt stop me from getting the ball but once I got it they double-teamed me pretty good", Nowitzki said. Teletovic and Williams got it going for the Nets in the second quarter after they trailed 21-18. The reserve forward Teletovic tied it 23-all with the first of six 3-pointers he made in the period. He scored 19 of the Nets 23 points in the first six minutes to give them a 41-33 lead with 5:51 left. For Williams, it was his third straight game off the bench since returning to the Nets from a left sprained ankle. The Nets point guard had only one turnover in 35 minutes. Williams understood the tough time that Teletovic went through last season and commended him for the way he handled the tough situation. "It speaks a lot about him. (He was) definitely frustrated a lot last year with his lack of playing time. Mirzas a competitor and hes been one of the top players in Europe for a long time," he said. NOTES: Ever since Kidd switched to a starting lineup of Pierce, Garnett, Joe Johnson, Alan Anderson and Shaun Livingston, the Nets have gone 7-0 this season. The two people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract had not yet been signed. Included in Santanas guarantee is a $1 million buyout of a fifth-year option on the deal. The Twins again brought a need for better starting pitching into the off-season, and Santana has been one of the steadiest around. Over the last five years, Santana averaged 12 wins, 207 innings and 164 strikeouts while making 30 or more starts each season. The Twins pursued him a year ago, but he held out until March and signed with Atlanta for one season and $14.1 million.Santana, who turns 32 Friday, was 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA in 31 starts for the Braves last year. The Twins spent aggressively on starting pitching last winter, signing free agents Ricky Nolasco ($49 million), Phil Hughes ($24 million) and Mike Pelfrey ($11 million), who had previously joined the team for 2013 on a one-year deal. Nolasco was given the richest contract for a free agent in Twins history. The Twins have had the worst collective ERA by their starting pitchers in the major leagues the last two seasons (5.06 in 2014 and 5.226 in 2013), and only the Colorado Rockies were higher than their 5.dddddddddddd40 mark in 2012. But other than Kyle Gibson, who was up and down in his second season in the majors, the Twins offered little resistance to hitters around the rest of the league. Nolasco struggled badly in his first year.General manager Terry Ryan said last week that the rotation was the priority for yet another winter.Weve had a struggle on the mound so well continue to look at pitching first, Ryan said.Santana was picked for the All-Star game in 2008, his fourth of eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels, who traded him to the Kansas City Royals for 2013. Because Santana turned down a qualifying offer from the Braves, his signing comes with draft-pick compensation. The Twins must forfeit their second-round selection next year. With Santana, Hughes, Gibson and Nolasco in line for the first four spots, Pelfrey will likely compete in spring training with prospects Trevor May and Alex Meyer for the fifth slot in the rotation with Tommy Milone also in the mix. Santana has made three career starts at Target Field, going 2-0 with a 3.10 ERA and 14 strikeouts in 20 1-3 innings.___AP Sports Writer Ronald Blum contributed to this report from San Diego.
