LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- U.S. captain Tom Watson said Monday that Tiger Woods latest back injury "doesnt bode well right now" for Woods playing in the Ryder Cup. Watson told SiriusXM PGA Tour Radio he was watching the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational when Woods withdrew after hitting his tee shot on the ninth hole because of another injury to his back. "Tiger would be a great addition to our team," Watson said. "As Ive said all along, I would pick Tiger Woods if hes healthy and playing well. This doesnt bode well right now. I just hope that maybe its just an isolated problem that he can turn around and possibly play this week at the PGA." Woods flew home to Florida on Sunday to be evaluated. It was not clear when he would know if he could play at Valhalla, where Woods won the PGA Championship in 2000. His caddie was on the course Monday. Woods agent told ESPN on Monday that the four-time PGA Championship winner has not been ruled out of the tournament. Woods, in only his third tournament since returning from back surgery, said he jarred his lower back when he hopped into a deep bunker after playing an awkward shot from the slope of the bunker on the second hole at Firestone. He tried to keep playing and hit some shockingly bad shots -- one into the water on No. 3, another on the par-3 fifth that was 65 yards short of the flag. "I watched him play almost the entire front nine," Watson said. "And the shot he had at 5 ... I said, Somethings wrong with Tiger. You dont hit that terrible a shot ever -- ever. And then, of course, No. 9, he just couldnt go any farther. It concerns me because thats an injury that seems like he tried to address before and hes come back from that particular injury." Watson said he sent Woods a text to tell him he was sorry about the injury, and "I hope you get well soon." Woods missed two majors and three months of the season after March 31 back surgery. He has no chance of making the Ryder Cup team unless he wins the PGA Championship. If he cant play this week, that would be the end of his PGA Tour season until after the Ryder Cup. And boy, it felt good when ball met leather -- even better than watching his tiebreaking homer soar over the left field wall an inning earlier. After a late-game switch from third base to left field, Harrison laid out to grab Yangervis Solartes line drive Sunday, helping to preserve the Pittsburgh Pirates first win in the Bronx in 54 years, 5-3 over the New York Yankees for a doubleheader split. "Home runs are great, but any time you can make a play in the field and help out the pitcher it feels good," Harrison said. "I knew once I left my feet it was in there." Mark Teixeira had a two-run single and Brett Gardner added an RBI double as New York beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in the opener of the first single-admission twinbill at Yankee Stadium since 2004. The Pirates had lost all eight games at Yankee Stadium in interleague play. They last beat New York on the road in Game 5 of the 1960 World Series. "Its just another win," said Pittsburgh starter Gerrit Cole, who grew up a Yankees fan. "We need as many as we can, and the other stuff doesnt matter." Cole (4-3), who turned down the Yankees when they drafted him in 2008 to go to UCLA, struck out eight in six sharp innings to help the Pirates snap a three-game skid. Starling Marte hit a two-run homer off Vidal Nuno in the sixth inning of the second game after striking out four times in the opener. Marte, though, left with left hamstring tightness in the seventh inning. Neil Walker and Tony Sanchez homered for Pittsburgh in the opener. "Ill be good for the next game," Marte said. Harrison, who ran into the third out of the fifth inning before a run could cross the plate, switched from third base to left field in place of Marte. Then in the eighth, with pinch-hitter Derek Jeter on first following a single, Solarte hit a sharp liner to left. Harrison raced to his right and caught it with a fully extended dive toward the line. "Harrison was a big reason they won the second game today. His defence, his offence really hurt us today. Sol put a great at-bat as well and hit a rocket," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You dont see guys lay out 320 feet away very often, but he did." Former Yankees catcher Chris Stewart had two RBIs for the Pirates. Fill-in closer Mark Melancon, who broke into the big leagues with New York, pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save. Solarte homered in the sixth to tie it 3-all and singled for the Yankees, who had won four straight. The teams looked as if they lost focus during the 38-minute break between games, coming out for Game 2 in front of a fraction of the 46,858 who attended the opener and making four quick errors.dddddddddddd. The second game was scheduled as a makeup for Friday nights rainout. Gardner was picked off third base in the first inning, a warmup for a sloppy second in which both clubs appeared to forget the fundamentals. Solarte made a throwing error, then Brian Roberts dropped a throw from Solarte on a force attempt to put runners at the corners. Stewart had an RBI single but Jose Tabata slowed coming around second with a leg injury and was tagged out trotting into third to end the inning. The Pirates were worse in the bottom half, allowing New York to score twice with two outs. Travis Snider let John Ryan Murphys single skitter through his legs in right field for a run. Snider had replaced Tabata in right field to start the inning. The Pirates said Tabata had tightness in his right hamstring. Brendan Ryan laid down a perfect squeeze to make it 2-1 and went to second on Coles throwing error. Gardner walked and Cole balked the runners to second and third, but Roberts popped out to second base. Harrison doubled to left with two outs in the fifth but slipped about halfway to third base and was tagged out in a rundown before Snider could cross home plate. "I tried to stay in it as long as I could," Harrison said. Harrison redeemed himself in the seventh with a drive to left off Alfredo Aceves (0-2). "He can surprise you," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said of Harrison, usually a bench player. "He does things with intent all the time." In the opener, Brian McCann had an RBI single in the first as New York scored all its runs in the first two innings on five hits off Charlie Morton (0-6). After Gardners RBI double in the second, Morton allowed just one baserunner through seven innings. Hiroki Kuroda (3-3) yielded three runs and five hits in six innings for his first win since April 12 against Boston. "As a pitcher, the win is always a good thing," Kuroda said through a translator. "Even though you may not have perfect stuff, to get the win is very encouraging." David Robertson, the fourth Yankees reliever, got four outs for his eighth save. NOTES: Yankees RF Carlos Beltran had a second cortisone shot to try to ease the discomfort in his right elbow from a bone spur. He will get a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews on Tuesday. ... Stuck in a rut since coming off the disabled list, Chavez hit the first pitch he saw in the ninth inning for a run-scoring single, sending the Diamondbacks to another walk-off victory, 4-3 over the San Francisco Giants on Saturday night. And then there were four. Thirty-two teams started this National Football League season and the best four are left standing. In Seattle, the Seahawks first-half defence was outstanding . The New Orleans Saints offence only managed 34 passing yards for Drew Brees and just 42 rushing yards. The Seattle defence conceded no points in the first half and held tight end Jimmy Graham to not a single reception until the games final minute. Russell Wilson did not have a dominant game, but the starting 11 without the ball won the game for Seattle. And so did Marshawn Lynch . Of all the running backs in the league, I dont think there is another who gives a greater effort than Marshawn Lynch, play after play. It is impressive for me watch his willingness to absorb physical punishment for an extra yard or even less. Logic says it cant last, that his time is coming or maybe he just has a body type impervious to what normally slows and limits other running backs. In any case, he is not the fastest, quickest or even most skilled, but he never gives up on a play or any opportunity with an intense disregard for possible injury. Marshawn Lynch is a great running back. Seattle has a combination of speed, attitude, confidence and resolve . The intensity of the NFC championship San Francisco at Seattle will be a battle of wills as much as any skills. In New England, the Patriots went with 42 running plays and just 25 passing plays. The play-calling served a dual purpose. Firstly, when you run that much, you dictate aggressive energy to an opponent. After a while, you can wear a defence out because, like all human beings, you get tired of hitting. So, in a moment where you lose emotional concentration at "point of attack," what would normally be a two or three-yard play becomes a 70-yard touchdown run like LaGarrette Blounts 73-yard run in the fourth. Understanding football is one thing, but understanding the psychology of hitting is really unique. You can wear people out and the Patriots achieved that. The second part of that dual purpose was keeping the ball away from Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. If you dont limit the his time with the ball and his number of plays, Andrew Luck is going to beat you. It is not as if Luck has a great team around him, quite the opposite, but he is a classic example of a player as a quarterback who makes those around him look better than they are. Once the Colts protect Andrew Luck with a higher degree of consistency, he will be as good as any quarterback on any team in the NFL. As for the Patriots, Logan Mankins at left guard was outstanding and Jamie Collins at linebacker is the next defensive star in New England. Without Vince Wilfork, Brandon Spikes, Jerrod Mayo and Tommy Kelly on defence, the Patriots should not be in the AFC championship game, but here they are. It was an emotionallly heated game in Carolina between the Panthers and San Francisco 49ers, especially early on, and it has been a while since I have seen that much confrontational talk and verbal exchanges.ddddddddddddIt seemed like on every play, someone was threatening someone elseabout something . I am sure that all week, the Panthers grew intensely tired of hearing how tough and physical the 49ers were and made a collective agreement to not allow any intimidation, but be the aggressor and not the participant. Now, I dont think Carolina backed down for one moment, but seven plays inside the five-yard line and only three points means that, in the toughest part of football - short yardage and goaline plays, the Niners won. In playoff football, the smallest of mistakes mean the biggest of consequences and the Panthers gave the 49ers four first downs on penalties in the first half and it seemed that all four were the result of excessive emotion. The Panthers will learn from this and, if they find themselves in the same position next year at this time, they will not make the same mistake of losing self-control. After a last-minute win over the Arizona Cardinals to close the season, a win over the Packers in the brutal cold of Green Bay in the NFC Wild Card playoff and a tough, physical win over the Panthers, right now, no team believes more in each other than the San Francisco 49ers. In Denver, the one word to describe the Broncos win over the San Diego Chargers is "methodical." I think the Charger made one key mistake to lose the game and Denver made the opposite to win . By the end of the third quarter, the Chargers had 79 total yards. In the fourth quarter alone, they had 180. I guess common sense says to play the time of possession game again for San Diego to win, but it was not working . I wonder what would have happened if the Chargers took their fourth-quarter approach all game long and just went for broke, because when they did in the fourth, the game became a game because of it. San Diego was simply way too conservative. With Denver, they did to the Chargers what the Chargers did to them back on that Thursday night game. Manning must have completed 80 per cent of his passes within the first 10 yards down field. They just incrementally kept moving down field with the shortest of distance created using a series of line of scrimmage screens, five-yard crossers, and check downs - no big plays, just little little plays of success and result. One interesting question that has already been asked is, in one game to win it all , who would be your quarterback - Brady or Manning? Given history, I would say Brady, but given ability to control a defense pre-snap, I would say Manning. To pick between that pair is a never-ending discussion. The season began with 32 and now it is down to four and, giving consideration to all discussion and analytical evaluation, it truly is the best four. ' ' '
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb has been activated from the 15-day disabled list after missing almost six weeks with a strained side. The team announced the move on Thursday. Cobb had been on the DL since April 13. To make room on the roster for Cobb, outfielder Kevin Kiermaier was optioned to Triple-A Durham after Wednesday nights game against Oakland. Tampa Bay starters Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore both remain on the disabled list. Hellickson threw 34 pitches during his first batting practice session Thursday. A little over a day after returning to Buffalo from the Sochi Games, and with his future uncertain, Miller stopped 36 shots and even contributed to the offence with two assists in a 3-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night in the NHLs first game after its Olympic break. "I wasnt really getting to far ahead or thinking about that kind of stuff," Miller said when asked about his future. Before the game, general manager Tim Murray acknowledged hes shopping the goalie with the intention of dealing him before the leagues trade deadline on March 5. Miller is on the block because hes in the final year of his contract, and Murray is unsure whether the 33-year-old is prepared to re-sign with a team thats rebuilding through youth. "Im trying to take the approach to take things as they come right now and be positive and play hockey," Miller added. "Its a lot of fun to play and win. Im going to try to enjoy these kind of moments where you can help make a difference." Despite feeling "a little bit goofy" from jetlag, Miller was certainly the difference by stopping the first 20 shots he faced in a game in which Buffalo was outshot 38-18. "It just shows what kind of goaltender we have in Ryan Miller," interim coach Ted Nolan said. "I dont think we had too much reason to say we were the better team tonight outside of Ryan Miller stealing that game for us." Christian Ehrhoff scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 44 seconds left. Tyler Ennis also scored for Buffalo, which snapped a four-game skid, and won for only the third time in its past 14 games (3-8-3). Both of Millers assists came on Ehrhoffs goals. That made him the NHLs first goalie to have that many since Vancouvers Cory Schneider had two in a 5-4 overtime loss to Tampa Bay on Dec. 11, 2010, according to STATS. Ehrhoffs decisive goal came after he circled the Hurricanes net, and then stopped and spun in the right circle, where he attempted to feed the puck through the crease to teammate Marcus Foligno. The puck instead glanced off the stick of Hurricanes defenceman Justin Faulk and floated inn over goaltender Cam Ward.dddddddddddd Eric Staal and Alexander Semin scored for the Hurricanes, who lost to Buffalo in regulation for the first time in seven meetings, dating to a 1-0 loss at Carolina on Nov. 18. 2011. The teams got an early start coming out of the NHLs two-week break. The game was originally scheduled to be played Jan. 9, but postponed after a blizzard hit Buffalo. Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller found little fault in his teams performance. "Miller was the first star, and theres your answer right there," Muller said. "That was a complete, solid game on our part for 60 minutes. We did everything we had to do." Everything, of course, except score more than Buffalo. Miller put on a show. Early into the second period, he got a piece of Faulks snap shot from the left circle, and then recovered in time to turn aside Manny Malhotras attempt to convert the rebound in front. Miller had Hurricanes forward Jeff Skinner looking up to the rafters and shaking his head midway through the second period. That reaction came after Skinner got off a hard shot from the right circle on a partial break, only to have Miller snag it with his glove. "We had a lot of chances," said Staal, who beat Miller through the legs on a 2-on-1 break. "When its a close game, you have to be able to bury them. And tonight, Miller made a lot of good saves." Following the game, Miller spent time surrounded by fans at the penalty box, where he took part in a television interview. He then got a cheer from the few remaining fans inside the arena as he headed to the locker room about 10 minutes after the game ended. Whatever might happen over the next week, Miller has enjoyed his 12 years in Buffalo. "I love this area. The fans have always been great," he said. "If it happens that Im traded, Im preparing to play somewhere else. It all just comes to its going to be hockey." NOTES: Sabres LW Matt Moulson (upper body) returned to the Sabres lineup after missing four games before the break. Also back was Buffalo C Cody McCormick, who missed 24 games with an upper-body injury. ... Buffalo also snapped an eight game home losing streak, during which it had gone 0-5-3. ... As a result of the rescheduled game, the Hurricanes opened a five-game road trip, their longest of the season. ' ' '
BELFAST -- Marcel Kittel sprinted to victory in a wet second stage of the Giro dItalia on Saturday as Michael Matthews took the overall leaders pink jersey from Orica-GreenEdge teammate Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C. Kittel timed his move to perfection, with 200 metres remaining, to edge out Nacer Bouhanni and Giacomo Nizzolo in a bunch sprint at the end of the 218-kilometre (135-mile) leg, which started and ended in Belfast. The German cyclist clocked more than five hours to claim his first Giro stage win on the day before his 26th birthday. "Honestly, it was not so easy today to stay in front with the team, I lost them a few times," Kittel said. "It was a very hard day with all the rain, and the boys did an amazing job. "The weather was very Irish I guess, and youre cold if you ride five hours in the rain. "I was really overwhelmed by all the people on the roads, it was really a big party despite the weather. Im super happy and proud about this win, its really something to have a win in each of the three Grand Tours." Matthews finished three seconds ahead of his Orica teammates and was hoping to still be wearing the maglia rosa when the Giro moves into Italy. "I didnt expect it, its truly an honour to be wearing this jersey," Matthews said. "We had a great team time trial yesterday and we decided to give it to Svein for his birthday. To take it today is truly something amazing. "Ill try to keep it as long as I can, hopefully until at least stage six or seven. Theres a few guys who are close to me. Its truly a massive thing for the team and for me as well." Despite the heavy rain, thousands of people lined the route which took in picturesque rock formation, the Giants Causeway, as it wound down the coast. Two Garmin-Sharp cyclists withdrew from the race following a crash in Fridays opening team time trial. Dan Martin will have surgery later Saturday on a broken collarbone. Teammate Koldo Fernandez finished the stage, but tests afterward revealed he had also broken his clavicle. There was an early breakaway of four riders. NEW YORK -- This much is clear: Michael Pineda had a dark substance smudged on his pitching hand during his first win for the New York Yankees. Pine tar or dirt? We might never know. Pineda took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning, and Jacoby Ellsbury hit an RBI single off old roommate Clay Buchholz in his first game against the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees 4-1 victory Thursday night left a bit of a mystery: Were Pinedas pitches plain old nasty, or was something more sinister involved? "Its dirt," Pineda said. "Between the innings, Im sweating too much, my hand. Im putting dirt -- Im grasping the dirt. ... Im not using pine tar." Ellsbury drew all the pregame attention after switching sides in the rivalry during the off-season. But it was the dark brown, seemingly tacky substance on the lower palm of Pinedas right hand that became the focus. Close-up camera shots showed Pineda (1-1) pitching during the early innings with something on his hand, and there was speculation it was pine tar to help him get a better grip on a chilly night. The game was never stopped for an umpire to examine him, and it whatever it was, it was gone by the fifth. "I became aware of it in the fourth inning through the video that someone had seen," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "And then, when he came back out for the fifth inning, it looked, based on where it was told to me it was located, it looked like the palm of his right hand was clean." Buchholz and fellow Red Sox ace Jon Lester both attracted questions last year about substances they had on the mound, but nothing came of them. "The Red Sox didnt bring it to our attention, so theres nothing we can do about it," umpire crew chief Brian ONora said. "If they bring it to our attention, then youve got to do something." Yankees manager Joe Girardi essentially repeated the same answer five times during his postgame news conference. "I never saw it. Theres nothing really for me to talk about," he said. Making his first Yankee Stadium start 27 months after he was acquired from Seattle, Pineda appeared completely recovered from the shoulder surgery that sidelined him for two years. Throwing at up to 95 mph, he allowed four hits, struck out seven and walked two. Brian McCann ended an 0-for-14 slide with a run-scoring single that put the Yankees ahead during a two-run fourth that also included a run-scoring double-play grounder by Alfonso Soriano. Making just his third big league start after 554 games in the minor leagues, 27-year-old infielder Dean Anna homered as New York made it 4-0 in the fifth. Anna opened spring training wearing No. 93 after six minor league seasons with San Diego, which traded him to New York in November. Now wearing a more respectable No. 45, he was greeted after the homer by Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who gave him a high-five. Anna had received more than 100 emails and texts by the time the game ended, and he even got the ball back. "Words cant explain it. Honestly, they really cant. All the history with these two teams," Anna said. This was slightly different than the way he dreamed it would happen. "In Wrigley Field, actually," he said. "But Yankee Stadium against the Red Sox I think is pretty good, too." After spending nine years in the Red Sox organization and winning World Series titles in 2007 and last year, Ellsbury left for a $153 million, seven-year contract with the Yankees. And his first game put him at the plate against Buchholz (0-1), his roommate at Lowell of the New York-Penn League in their first summer of professional ball. On a 1-for-4 night, Ellsbury reached on third baseman Jonathan Herreras fielding error and scored the games first run in the fourth and singled sharply to left to drive in a run in the fifth. Daniel Nava led off the seventh with a home run into the second deck in right, and Xander Bogaerts single chased Pineda. With David Robertson on the disabled list and Shawn Kelley and Adam Warren unavailable after pitching Wednesday, the Yankees scrambled their bullpen. Cesar Cabral and David Phelps retired Bostons last nine batters -- striking out five -- and Phelps got seven outs for his first career save. "I just figured as long as I was keeping guys off base, they were going to let me go," Phelps said. "Any time you can get a first, as long as its a good first, is always exciting." NOTES: Jeter went 2 for 4 with a double, raising his average to .290. ... While the comments did not go over very well with either the Canadiens players or head coach, Coderre stood by his tweet as a mark of his true fandom. "Do you want to have a mayor who believes in his team?" Coderre told RDS on Monday. Coderre was quick to note that this is not the first time hes gone public over the Habs. "When I was [a Cabinet minister] myself I was calling open lines about the game of the day," Coderre said, referring to his run as Federal Immigration Minister in 2002 and 2003. The 50-year-old Coderre was elected mayor in the Citys municipal election on Nov. 3. His defence follows a days worth of commentary from Canadiens players and head coach Michel Therrien.dddddddddddd "I really believe this is inappropriate from our mayor," Therrien told reporters earlier Monday, weighing his words carefully. Habs forward Max Pacioretty, meanwhile, was much more candid with his criticism. "What, do you think hes gonna coach our team tomorrow? Thats embarrassing," Pacioretty said Monday. "To bring down a player -- such a great person, such a great player, such a hard worker ... Daveys a true competitor and hes a great player and a great teammate, and thats just so uncalled for... Its only going to make matters worse." Coderre went out of his way to diffuse any notion that the tweet was a personal attack. "I like David, I think hes got great potential," Coderre told RDS. "The rest is a non-issue." However, he would stop short of guaranteeing that he would refrain from comment in the future. "I am what I am," Coderre said. "Im taking notes." "There are some people who will be very, very pleased with some of my comments and the others will say no, but for me its a non-issue. It [was] a moment of big emotion, because I wanted to see my team win, end of story." ' ' '
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach John Beilein is willing to give Nik Stauskas a little leeway when it comes to shot selection. "Hes looking for a perfect play all the time, and shooters got to shoot it," Beilein said. "Sometimes whats a bad shot for others is a really good shot for him." Stauskas scored 21 of his 25 points in the second half Sunday, repeatedly making contested shots from the perimeter to help the 20th-ranked Wolverines to a 79-70 win over 13th-ranked Michigan State. Michigan rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit and wrested first place in the Big Ten from its in-state rival. "I just came out with the mindset in the second half that I wasnt going to be stopped," Stauskas said. "Once I made a couple shots, it kept going from there." Caris LeVert added 23 points for the Wolverines (19-7, 11-3), who won both regular-season meetings against Michigan State and six of the last eight games in the series. The Spartans (22-6, 11-4) started well, but were only up 36-34 at halftime. Then Stauskas and LeVert led a second-half charge. The Wolverines trailed 52-51 before going on a 13-0 run that sent the Crisler Center crowd into delirium. Michigan scored 45 points in the second half Sunday -- after blitzing the Spartans for 50 after halftime in an 80-75 win in East Lansing last month. "The first game, I was very proud of our effort. This game, we looked tired," Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said. "Im not very proud of our effort." Gary Harris scored 21 points for the Spartans. The victory gives Michigan a chance to earn its second Big Ten title in three years after tying for the championship in 2012. The Wolverines have home games against Minnesota and Indiana, as well as trips to Purdue and Illinois. Michigan State has home games against Illinois and Iowa followed by a trip to Ohio State. Stauskas was terrific in Michigans win at Michigan State last month, but he had not scored more than 16 points in a game since then. Perhaps he was letting opposing teams take him out of the offence too easily, but at 6-foot-6, if Stauskas makes up his mind that hes going to shoot, he usually can. With the Wolverines down 48-43, Stauskas scored seven straight points to give Michigan the lead. When the Spartans edged back ahead by one, Stauskas answered with a 3-pointer, and it soon become clear that there wasnt much Michigan State could do to keep him from shooting over defenders on the perimeter. A 3-pointer by Stauskas from the right wing put Michigan ahead 59-52, then LeVert added a 3-pointer and a dunk. With the Spartans wearing down, Jon Horford dunked for Michigan to make it 68-56 -- and that ended a stretch of 23 straight Michigan points by Stauskas or LeVert. Michigan fans serenaded the Spartans with a chant of "little brother" toward the end. The Spartans have battled injuries throughout this season -- Adreian Payne and Brandon Dawson missed the first meeting with Michigan. Dawson was still out Sunday with his broken hand, but Payne is back, and he had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Keith Appling, who has been dealing with a wrist problem, scored only six points for Michigan State. "Yeah, I fell on the wrist again, but I couldnt come out of the game," Appling said. "Its very frustrating right now, because there are things I just cant do, but I cant let that be an excuse. Im the quarterback of this team, like coach always says, and I have to be out there leading." Michigan, of course, has been playing without big man Mitch McGary for over two months, but the Wolverines have overcome his back-related absence thus far. Glenn Robinson III scored 15 points Sunday, including an alley-oop dunk from a driving Stauskas that made it 72-61. Michigan State made 17 shots from 3-point range in its previous game against Purdue, and the Spartans were locked in early in this one. Payne dunked on freshman Zak Irvin while drawing a foul, and the three-point play gave Michigan State a 22-11 lead. The Wolverines responded with a 10-0 run that included 3-pointers by Spike Albrecht and LeVert and a breakaway dunk by Irvin. LeVert scored 14 points in the first half, and his 3-pointer in the final seconds cut Michigan States lead to two. Swell Bottles Ireland . Just ask Arsenal fans. Both the Ravens and Chargers have used their back-to-back wins to stay in the hunt in tight division races. Baltimore is tied for second in the AFC North with Pittsburgh and Cleveland as all three clubs trail 7-3-1 Cincinnati, while San Diego is even with Kansas City in the AFC West and a game back of 8-3 Denver. The Ravens will have one fewer day of rest as they were in action last Monday night and knocked off the New Orleans Saints 34-27 behind running back Justin Forsetts career-high 182 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries. Joe Flacco threw for 243 yards and a touchdown, which was caught by wide receiver Steve Smith among his four receptions for 89 yards. Safety Will Hill had an interception he returned 44 yards for a touchdown, while linebacker Elvis Dumervil had two of the clubs four sacks. That was a really special win, Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said. You are going to have to win a lot of games to make the playoffs in our conference. The Ravens were coming off a bye after having bested Tennessee 21-7 on Nov. 9, while the Chargers dropped three in a row heading into their bye in Week 10. They have since come out with wins over Oakland and St. Louis, topping the Rams in thrilling fashion 27-24 this past Sunday. Quarterback Philip Rivers put the Chargers up by 10 on a 29-yard touchdown pass to wideout Keenan Allen with 8:09 to play, but the Rams came back with a touchdown with 2:04 to go and then moved into position for a game-tying field goal try with a little over a minute to play. However, while trying for a go-ahead score, St. Louis quarterback Shaun Hill was picked off by San Diego safety Marcus Gilchrist just inside the end zone to secure the win. The Chargers defense held Hill to 198 passing yards and recorded two interceptions, while linebacker Andrew Gachkar picked up a fumble caused by defensive tackle Corey Liugets sack and took it 13 yards for a score in the third quarter. They came up big the whole game, Rivers said about his defense. We had some turnovers and some things and we put them in some tough spots. They were awesome. Rivers was 29-of-35 for 291 yards with one touchdown pass while also having an interception returned 99 yards for a score. Allen ended with six catches for 104 yards and running back Ryan Mathews had 105 yards rushing and a score on 12 carries. The Ravens lead the all-time series with the Chargers 5-4, with seven of those nine games taking place in San Diego. The Chargers have lost both of their trips to Baltimore. This game marks the first meeting between the clubs at M&T Stadium since 2006. WHAT TO WATCH FOR The Ravens have been getting solid production from their ground game all season long, but the Chargers big game from their running was a pleasant surprise for a club that ranks 27th on the ground (89.5 yards per game) this season. The 27-year-old Mathews appeared in his second game after missing seven in a row with a knee injury and has posted 175 yards rushing since his return. He averaged a career-besst 8.dddddddddddd.8 yards per carry last game and his 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the longest scoring carry of his career. You never really know how much you miss a guy until he gets back and gets rolling like he did today, because some of those runs today are why he was drafted where he was, and why he is such a big impact player for us. You need a home run sometimes, said Rivers. Forsett has been knocking them out of the park all season as his 5.83 rushing average leads all running backs and he sits third in the NFL with 903 yards on the ground. Forsett is one of only three players in the NFL this season to have at least 65 total yards in every game this season, joining Dallas DeMarco Murray and Antonio Brown of Pittsburgh. The return of Mathews should help Rivers, who failed to throw at least two touchdown passes for only the third time in 10 games this season last weekend. In his past four games versus the Ravens, Rivers has thrown for 1,183 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. Flacco has struggled a bit more in this series, getting picked off three times to five touchdown passes and 771 yards in three games, though he passed for 355 yards in the most recent meeting. That came on Nov. 25, 2012, a 16-13 overtime victory. Flacco will look to challenge a Chargers defense that is ninth in the NFL with 330.1 yards allowed per game and sixth in scoring defense at 19.6 points per game. San Diego has yielded 10 points or fewer three times this season and hasnt done so in four games since 2007. However, the Chargers have yielded at least 23 points in five of their last six. The Ravens rank fifth against the run and though they are giving up 264.6 yards per game through the air, 24 of their 29 sacks this season have come in the past six games. Linebackers Dumervil and Terrell Suggs are leading the charge. Dumervil has 12 1/2 sacks this season, tied for the second most in the NFL and just three shy of a new franchise single-season record. Suggs, meanwhile, has six sacks and has 100 1/2 in his career. Not only will Rivers have to avoid that duo, but hell have a rookie starter under center in Chris Watt. The third-round selection is expected to take the role after San Diego placed its third center on injured reserve this season. Rich Ohrnberger became the latest to have his season end due to a back injury. San Diego lost center Nick Hardwick after Week 1 due to a knee injury and Doug Legursky went down after Week 5 with a knee ailment. OVERALL ANALYSIS The Chargers and Ravens right in the thick of the chase for their respective division crowns and come into this meeting red hot. Baltimore has the luxury of playing at home and with a defense that can get to the quarterback. That will make Mathews a key element as hell need to move the ball to keep the Ravens linebackers honest and Baltimore has had trouble defending quarterbacks who have time to throw. Rivers has had some solid efforts against the Ravens, but working with a rookie center against a talented defense isnt an ideal situation and it is something Baltimore may be able to exploit. Sports Network predicted outcome: Ravens 17, Chargers 13 ' ' '

MADRID, Spain -- Cristiano Ronaldo scored two goals as Real Madrid completed its Champions League last 16 thrashing of Schalke with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday. Madrid breezed into the quarterfinals after winning 9-2 on aggregate following its 6-1 first-leg victory in Germany. The Spanish leaders progress was never in doubt as coach Carlo Ancelotti rotated his squad, with Gareth Bale forced off the bench early when Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez injured his right knee two minutes in at the Santiago Bernabeu. Bale played a key role in the victory, feeding Ronaldo for the 21st-minute opener before Schalke defender Tim Hoogland equalized from a shot deflected beyond Iker Casillas. Ronaldo scored his 13th goal of the competition with an individual effort before Alvaro Morata struck Madrids third from Bales pass in the 75th. The victory extended Madrids unbeaten run to 31 games in all competitions ahead of Sundays Spanish league showdown with Barcelona. Also Tuesday, Chelsea beat Galatasaray 2-0 to reach the quarterfinals with a 3-1 aggregate victory, keeping alive the possibility of Madrid coming up against former coach Jose Mourinho. "I think all of the best teams have won their series, although there can be some surprises," Ancelotti said, with the quarterfinals draw coming on Friday. "Whoever we draw, its going to be difficult." Jese exited after Schalke defender Sead Kolasinac barged into the back of the Madrid winger, leaving him on the turf in visible pain. Ancelotti said Jese had ruptured his cruciate ligament, leaving him unlikely to return this season. Bale swiftly added to the attack as Morata threaded a ball onto his run into the area and the Welshman picked out the inrushing Ronaldo to beat Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann. Madrids intensity soon slackened, and the visitors took advantage of the dip in the 31st as Julian Drexler started a break that eventually finished with Hooglands shot from outside the area deflecting off Sergio Ramos foot around goalie Iker Casillas. "The team reacted well, the performance was good," Schalke coach Jens Keller said through a translator. "But the minute Real Madrid has an opportunity, they can convert it into goal." Bale lost control at the halfway line in the 74th but Ronaldo skipped onto the loose ball and headed straight for Schalkes goal, twisting and turning defender Joel Matip before closing the run with a clinical finish from the edge of the area. Ronaldo didnt look done as he found the crossbar in the ensuing minute, with the rebound falling to Bale to unselfishly pass back for Morata to net after the Madrid striker had missed a number of early scoring chances. Ronaldo, who then found the post after that, moved within one goal of the record 14 scored by Lionel Messi of Barcelona and Jose Altafini of AC Milan in a single campaign of Europes top-tier competition. Ronaldo also equaled club great Ferenc Puskas mark of 242 goals with his brace. Wayne Gretzky Coyotes Jersey . PARIS -- With dramatic first and last tries, France stole a 26-24 win over England on Saturday to restore some Six Nations confidence in a team shaken by last years wooden spoon embarrassment. Right winger Yoann Huget scored the first try after 30 seconds and, after England rallied from 16-3 down to lead 24-19 with four minutes left, centre Gael Fickou collected a pass from fellow substitute Dimitri Szarzewski after the hooker made a superb run down the left. Fickou cut inside his marker and ran round behind the posts. Maxime Machenaud kicked the extras. "We were the first to shoot and the last to shoot," France coach Philippe Saint-Andre said. "In the second half we really struggled physically and missed a lot of tackles. But the watchword was to never ease up. In terms of confidence and for 2014 its a very important win. We caused the English quite a few problems in the first half. But they attacked us through the middle and made it very hard for us in that zone." With its third win in its last 12 tests, France should avert the wooden spoon with Italy next up at home. "Last year we had a lot of setbacks, but thats also what unites a team," captain Pascal Pape said. "Its been a long time since Ive seen the players smiling like that in the dressing room. So lets savour it tonight and go back to work tomorrow." England, runner-up in the last two Six Nations, travels to Scotland next weekend. "Having got ourselves back in the game, to lose from that position was very disappointing," England coach Stuart Lancaster said. "It was a great performance in lots of ways. Once we get away from the initial disappointment well take a lot of positives from the game." Lancaster gave "credit to the French team for how they created the opportunity from inside their own half" but underlined his teams need to limit mistakes. "Games are never won or lost in one moment," he said. "Everything matters at this level." England had punished weak defending to go within minutes of an improbable victory. No. 8 Billy Vunipola was the heaviest player on the pitch and Englands most dangerous runner, setting up both tries for fullback Mike Brown and outside centre Luther Burrell on debut. "There were five of our pack making their first starts here in France -- the youngest pack in the championship," Lancaster said. "I think weve learnt a lot from this." Huget scored two tries for France in the first half. Both sides are in somewhat of a rebuilding process. Saint-Andre surprisingly chose scrumhalf Jules Plisson alongside flyhalf Jean-Marc Doussain -- both are 22 and had never played together -- while Alexandre Flanquart won only his third cap. Winger Jack Nowell also made his England debut. "We took the challenge of showing these young players the highest level and, believe me, they experienced it," Saint-Andre said. Huget brought Stade de France to its feet in the first minute. Plissons kick ahead deflected into the path of Huget, who scooped it up and ran into the right corner for an unconverted score. England charged straight back and, following a period of pressure, England flyhalf Owen Farrell nailed a difficult kick from wide right to make it 5-3. But Doussain slotted over from close range for 8-3. But it was on the other flank where England struggled, and after a turnover, Doussain kicked ahead. The bounce favoured Huget and his pace took him clear for his fifth international try. Doussain missed the conversion but made amends with a more straightforward penalty kick for 16-3. Moments before the interval, Brown wriggled his way past three defenders and into the left corner. France was up 16-8 at halftime. The French led at halftime last year at Twickenham before losing 23-13, but this time held on. After Farrell made it 16-11 with a penalty, he exquisitely timed a pass for Vunipola to burst through the midfield, and with French players hanging off him he offloaded for Burrell to sprint in for a converted score. Cares dropped goal made it 21-16. Replacement scrumhalf Machenaud slotted a penalty, but Alex Goode responded shortly after to leave France needing some magic. England left winger Jonny May left the field in the second half with a broken nose, but after Fickous late try it was a case of broken English hearts. Justin Morneau Jersey .
