MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Rarely has tapping in a goal provided such relief for Wayne Rooney. With pressure building after a four-game England goal drought, the striker bundled the ball over the line from close range against Ecuador on Wednesday for a goal that lacked finesse or power but was a timely confidence boost ahead of the World Cup. "Its a great joy to score for England," Rooney said after the 2-2 draw at the Sun Life Stadium. "I was obviously pleased to score to get us back in the game." Rooneys 39th international goal cancelled out Enner Valencias eighth-minute header, nudging the ball over the line after Rickie Lambert hit the post. Lambert found the net himself six minutes into the second half after 20-year-old Ross Barkley weaved his way through the defence with ease. But Michael Arroyo powered in equalizer from distance in the 70th in his teams final game before playing Switzerland at the World Cup on June 15. "We have to improve aspects of our game to be ready for the start of the World Cup," Ecuador coach Reinaldo Rueda said. Both teams ended this feisty encounter with 10 men at the Sun Life Stadium after Raheem Sterling was dismissed in the 79th minute for a sliding challenge on Ecuador winger Antonio Valencia, who saw red for pushing the Englishman and going to grab his throat. The players will not be suspended for World Cup matches. "I am sorry for the fight with Sterling," Valencia said. "I apologized to the team after the match and the coach." England coach Hodgson accepted Sterlings challenge was fierce, but believes it didnt constitute a red card. "He played the ball and accelerated into the ball," Hodgson said." Im disappointed with Antonios reaction, grabbing the player." Hodgsons greater concern was midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain coming off with suspected ligament damage in his right knee -- just 10 days before Englands World Cup opener against Italy. As Hodgson tested the depth of his squad in its penultimate World Cup warm-up match, only Rooney was retained from the side that beat Peru 3-0. He featured on a team sheet that was mistakenly distributed around the stadium featuring the passport numbers of both teams players. The private English details were also tweeted out globally by an England team sponsor. After that blunder, Englands defenders responded with mishaps of their own, looking disjointed and giving the Ecuadoreans space to express themselves and unsettle their opponents. Defenders Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling allowed Enner Valencia to rise between them to meet Walter Ayovis cross with a header past Ben Foster, who was deputizing in goal for Joe Hart. There were several uneasy moments for Foster when he was exposed after racing off his line. For all the lapses at the back, England was playing with a confidence and verve at times up front that was lacking against Peru despite the margin of victory. Barkley, the England midfielder earning his fourth cap, was providing flashes of dynamism, typified by a backheel to Rooney, who could only clip the ball across the face of goal. After stand-in captain Frank Lampard tested goalkeeper Maximo Banguera with a long-range powerful strike, Rooney netted in the 29th despite being shunted out to the left wing. Meeting Alex Oxlade-Chamberlains cross, Banguera collided with his own player, and Lambert appeared to use his hand to control the ball before backheeling against the post. Rooney came close again twice before the break, stabbing the ball wide and sending a stinging strike into Bangueras hands. Like England, Ecuador also struggled to contain counterattacks while launching several of its own. Englands second goal followed a superb move. Barkley held off Frickson Erazo and Carlos Gruezo to waltz through opposition territory and set up Lambert for a powerful strike. The 32-year-old Lamberts third England goal came less than a year after making his debut. But Englands defence was breached again with a fine leveler. Just two minutes after coming off the bench, Arroyo picked up possession on the edge of the penalty area and sent it into the top corner. "A large number of the opportunities they created for themselves were when we were really attacking, we were going forward," Hodgson said. "Maybe what weve got to make certain is that we shore up a little bit behind some of these attacking movements." EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Odell Beckham Jr. cant get away from his one-handed catch.Signing memorabilia at a mall on his day off, it seemed every child and adult who walked up had a comment on the catch. Twitter remained abuzz about it, and friends and fans were still sending messages. Teammates were being asked about it on Wednesday as the Giants (3-8) turned their attention to the Jaguars (1-10) for Sundays in Jacksonville, Fla.The Giants are even trying to cash in. Their website has a photograph of Beckhams catch in a merchandise section with the come on: Grab The Gear and pictures of his No. 13 jersey for sale.Beckham has come to accept being the centre of attention in the wake of his catch, and it has given the rookie receiver some lighter moments, too.The funniest was seeing a short video shared by Major League Baseball of him catching 50 Cents ceremonial wide first pitch at a recent Mets game. That one gave me a good laugh, Beckham said.Beckham has watched his fully-extended, one-handed catch of the 43-yard pass from Eli Manning countless times over the past three days. Each time its hard for his to grasp his emotions.Words dont even really put that together, do it justice, Beckham said. It was one of those moments looking back on it and seeing the film and seeing the replay, Ive got to thank the man above. Without him, I think he caught that ball for me. Getting a perfect spiral from Manning, wearing a pair of gloves that perfectly fit his hand and have three exceptionally strong fingers and big hand also helped. Now, the goal is to put the catch behind him, move on and to keep improving his game.Beckham said he has not received any product endorsement offers in the past few days, saying if they come, they come. While his number of followers on Twitter and other social media has jumped, his life has not changed, although there was a line to see him at the mall, includding kids.ddddddddddddThey were cute. They were smiling, Beckham said. They were just like, Wow, it was a great catch. It just puts a smile on my face to have an impact on kids.David Tyree, the director of player development and the man who made the Helmet Catch to key the Giants 2008 Super Bowl win, talked to Beckham about their catches. He was like, You know, it may be better than mine, Beckham said of Tyrees comparison. And Im telling him, No way, yours was in the Super Bowl. Period. Mine was just in a regular season game. I still have to give hats off to him for that.Beckham has come a long way in the last two months. After missing most of training camp and the first four games with a hamstring injury, he has emerged as a top-notch talent. He has three 100-yard games in the past four and had a career-high 10 catches against Dallas on Sunday night.I definitely set high expectations for myself, Beckham said. I definitely expected to have a good season but I didnt know that it would be going the way that it is. Its a good feeling to be able to finally put the hamstring and all the other stuff that was around it behind you and just move forward. After this past weekend, Beckham can expect to be the focal point for opposing defences.I love opportunities and I love embracing a challenge, he said. Whatever this brings, I guess I brought it on myself. You just have to deal with it.NOTES: S and defensive captain Antel Rolle was excused from practice for personal reasons. ...LB Jameel McClain, DE Mathias Kiwanuka and G Adam Snyder did not practice because of knee injuries. ...OT Geoff Schwartz (toe), LB Jacquian Williams (concussion/shoulder), OT Justin Pugh (quad) an DT Cullen Jenkins (quad) were limited in practice. ...The Giants signed former Stony Brook OT Michael Bamiro to their practice squad.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFLCheap Buffalo Sabres GearWholesale Calgary Flames JerseysCheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche JerseysMontreal Canadiens Outlet StoreWholesale New Jersey Devils JerseysAdidas Arizona Coyotes JerseysCheap Adidas Boston Bruins JerseysCheap Adidas Carolina Hurricanes JerseysChicago Blackhawks Shop Free ShippingWholesale Columbus Blue Jackets JerseysDallas Stars Shop Free ShippingCheap Adidas Detroit Red Wings JerseysAnaheim Ducks Jerseys ChinaWholesale Edmonton Oilers JerseysFlorida Panthers Shop Free ShippingWholesale Los Angeles Kings JerseysMinnesota Wild Outlet StoreCheap Adidas Nashville Predators JerseysCheap Adidas New York Islanders JerseysNew York Rangers Winter Classic JerseysCheap Adidas Ottawa Senators JerseysCheap Adidas Philadelphia Flyers JerseysWholesale Pittsburgh Penguins JerseysCheap Adidas San Jose Sharks JerseysSt. Louis Blues Winter Classic JerseysWholesale Tampa Bay Lightning JerseysToronto Maple Leafs Outlet StoreVancouver Canucks Outlet StoreCheap Adidas Vegas Golden Knights JerseysCheap Adidas Washington Capitals JerseysCheap Adidas Winnipeg Jets Jerseys ' ' '
KAPALUA, Hawaii -- Jordan Spieth thought the Plantation Course was a blast to play when he arrived at Kapalua. He had even more fun Friday. Coming off a sensational rookie season, Spieth opened the new year by never coming close to bogey and making a 12-foot birdie putt on the last hole for a 7-under 66. That gave him a share of the lead at the Tournament of Champions with fellow newcomer Michael Thompson, Chris Kirk and Webb Simpson. "Its a course that I shouldnt make a lot of bogeys on if you keep the ball in play and just think your way around the course," Spieth said. "Ultimately, I did some good preparation and did a lot of hard work the last two or three weeks getting ready for today, and now just happy to be in good position after the first round." The wind off the west coast of Maui was the biggest surprise, shifting direction and speed throughout the opening round on a mostly sunny afternoon. But with an inch of rain overnight, the Plantation Course was soft enough that only two players in the 30-man field of PGA Tour winners failed to break par. Kirk thought he might be one of them when he first got to this slice of paradise. He had not played since winning the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island two months ago, and his first practice round was a skins game with Matt Kuchar and Scott Brown. Kirk got shut out and figures he shot about 80. When it counted, he was on the money, especially late in the round by closing with five straight birdies. The last two were not easy, especially with the wind blasting into him on the 17th hole, a par 4 that measures 545 yards down the hill. He hit a poor tee shot and had to smash a 3-wood into 30 feet for an unlikely birdie. He had to hit 3-wood and 9-iron for his final two shots on 18 to make birdie. "Some slightly more exciting birdies in the last few holes," he said. For the opening round of the year, where players are still trying to shake off some rust, the leaderboard has rarely been this tight. PGA champion Jason Dufner had four birdies and an eagle on his front-nine 30, only to settle into a string of pars on the back nine for a 6-under 67. Kevin Streelman bogeyed his last two holes and also was at 67, along with Zach Johnson and Ryan Moore. The top 10 players were separated by three shots. Adam Scott, coming off a two wins and a runner-up in Australia, and defending champion Dustin Johnson were among those at 70 On a day like this, experience might have been overrated. "I think the more times you play it, the more advantage you have," Kirk said. "Today was a little bit funny. Today was a day with the wind ... Ive never played in this wind. All the guys who have played here a bunch of times, youre very rarely going to see that wind. So that could throw some people off that were used to it." Even the players at Kapalua for the first time have watched enough of it on television to know how the ball reacts on the ground. Thats why Thompson was so surprised to see that his tee shot on the 18th bounced back a few feet. "From what I understand from guys that Ive talked to, that ball at least rolls 40 yards," Thompson said. "So its playing obviously very different." Spieth is getting plenty of attention going into a new year, mostly to see if he can back up his amazing rookie season. He had no status on any tour at this time a year ago, and by the end of the year he had won a tournament (John Deere Classic), finished No. 7 in the FedEx Cup and played on the Presidents Cup team. He is easing his way into the year, coming out to Maui with only his agent, still finding time to enjoy the Pacific and everything else at Kapalua. "Its almost like a vacation tournament in a sense," Spieth said. "Its been an awesome week so far. Obviously, Im here for this reason, and I dont have my family here with me. So theres definitely more of an emphasis on golf than maybe some other guys are putting into it here. Maybe thats an advantage." DIVOTS: Along with 13 newcomers to Kapalua, there were a few new -- or different -- faces on the bags. Simpson is using the caddie of Bubba Watson because the wife of his regular looper, Paul Tesori, is about to have a baby. The biggest change was with Patrick Reed, whose wife has carried his bag for his entire professional career. She is expecting their first child, so her brother is taking over. ... Kapalua is the toughest walk on tour, especially for the caddies. So it didnt help when Kip Henley, the caddie for Brian Gay, felt the bag heavier than usual on the fourth tee. He searched into the umbrella pocket and found a bottle of red wine that had been in the bag since the OHL Classic in Mexico last November. Gay gave it to his wife, who was in the gallery. SALT LAKE CITY -- Luol Deng better be ready to run because Kyrie Irving thinks the Cleveland Cavaliers play best when they play fast. Irving shines in the open court and says the Cavaliers can win if they can run. They got out on the break Friday night, and Irving had 25 points and eight assists in a 113-102 victory over the Utah Jazz. "We were just feeding off of one anothers energy. We picked up our pace on both ends of the floor. We got multiple stops and that led out to our fast-break points," Irving said. In Dengs first game with the Cavaliers, Irving scored 17 points in the third quarter to turn a three-point deficit into a 15-point lead as Cleveland snapped Utahs season-high four-game home winning streak. Deng had 10 points in his Cleveland debut. "He may have tried to press too much, but we want him to get in his rhythm with the rest of us," Irving said. The rest of the Cavs were certainly in a rhythm against Utah, one game after scoring 111 points against Philadelphia. The NBAs worst-shooting team hit 54 per cent against the Jazz, including 63 per cent in the second half. "We kept preaching to our guys to push the pace, push the pace, push the pace," Cleveland coach Mike Brown said after his players set a season high with 39 third-quarter points. Tristan Thompson had 18 points and 15 rebounds, while C.J. Miles and Dion Waiters each scored 17 to help the Cavs win their first road game since a 109-100 victory in Orlando on Dec. 13. Playing without leading scorer Gordon Hayward, sidelined by a strained hip, the Jazz were paced by Richard Jeffersons 18 points. Trey Burke had 17 points and six assists, but picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter right before Irving sparked Clevelands key surge. "I started being more aggressive and taking advantage of what they were giving me," said Irving, who missed three games with a bruised knee but has returned with extra energy and a sharp touch. Shooting 43 per cent on the season, he was 6 of 9 in the win Tuesday against Philadelphia and then made all three of his 3-point attempts against the Jazz. After a root canal Thursday, Irving showed no ill effects as he scored from a variety of spots on the floor and pushed the Cavaliers to 21 fast-break points. "In the first half, I was just too slow. Playing fast not only helps me, it helps the team. Everybbody was running the lane, everybodys running for easy baskets and thats what we need," Irving said.dddddddddddd. Deng played more than nine seasons with the Chicago Bulls and was an All-Star the past two before he was acquired Tuesday for Andrew Bynum and three future draft picks. Averaging 19 points and 6.9 rebounds in Chicago, Deng appeared to be searching to find his place in the Cleveland offence as he played only 21 minutes and had four turnovers. "Its been so strange. Even coming in today and getting the jersey on and seeing it say Cavaliers, it hit me again. But I looked in the mirror and checked the colours out and it looked pretty good," Deng said. Hayward, coming off a career-high 37 points, missed his first game this season because of a muscle strain in his left hip flexor. He will be a game-time decision Monday against Denver. This one was back and forth with 14 lead changes and 11 ties until Irving and the Cavaliers took charge in the third quarter. "He got his rhythm and hes that kind of player. He decided to take it upon himself to pick it up there and we didnt match his intensity," Utah coach Ty Corbin said. Trailing 49-46 at halftime, the Cavaliers started the third with a 10-2 run to take a 56-51 lead. When Burke was whistled for his fourth foul and headed to the bench, the Jazz were down 65-62. Irving took full advantage and scored 17 points, including consecutive 3-pointers, in the third quarter to spark another Cleveland run. Jarrett Jack, who has been bothered by back spasms, capped a 15-2 surge with a 3-pointer and a jumper to make it 87-70. "Obviously, Kyrie Irving got going. His team feeds off of him, and once he hit a couple of 3s and got to the line, thats when they went on a run," Burke said. Miles, after scoring a season-high 34 points and setting a Cavaliers record for 3s in a game with 10, kept up his strong shooting by going 6 of 7. Miles played his first seven years in Utah and greeted Corbin with a warm embrace just before the opening tip. NOTES: The Cavaliers had lost six in a row at Utah before winning the last two. ... After starting 1 of 6 from the field, Utah F Marvin Williams took off the face mask hes been wearing since he broke his nose in November and played without it. ... NEW YORK -- J.J. Hardy finally got in on the fun Saturday, against a likely opponent. Nelson Cruz has been hitting homers all season. Cruz hit his 23rd home run, Hardy connected for his first of the year and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 6-1 after starter Bud Norris left with tightness in his right groin. Adam Jones and Steve Pearce also went deep off struggling soft-tosser Vidal Nuno, helping the Orioles rebound after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss Friday night. "Big win for us," Hardy said. Cruz and Pearce each had a two-run shot. Hardy ended a drought of 339 at-bats that dated to last September. "It definitely felt nice," he said. "I felt like I forgot how to do it." "I think it probably is a little bit of a relief. I started to question myself if I ever was going to hit one again," Hardy added. Mark Teixeira hit his 12th home run for the Yankees, who had won four straight and eight of 10, but that was all they managed against Norris and three relievers. During a pregame ceremony on the field, former New York first baseman Tino Martinez was honoured with a plaque to be placed in Monument Park. Making his first start against the Yankees, Norris (7-5) allowed three hits in five innings and matched a career high by winning his fourth straight start. He warmed up on the mound for the sixth but was pulled for Ryan Webb, who pitched two scoreless innings. Tommy Hunter got the final five outs. Norris said he felt something "kind of funny" while throwing a fastball in the fifth. "It kind of grabbed on me," he said. "Ive had groin stuff before, especially my left one but not necessarily my right one. Youve got to be real careful with those." "I could see it getting a little worse and I wanted to be smart, but really, hats off to the offence for scoring and to the bullpen for picking me up," Norris added. "Pretty sore right now." Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Norris probably will pitch the night game of a split doubleheader Friday against Tampa Bay, but the right-hander said it was too soon to tell. "Weve got other options, but Im hoping we caught it in time," Showalter said. Pressed into the rotation because of injuries to CC Sabathia, Ivan Nova and Michael Pineda, Nuno (1-4) is having a hard time with the homer-friendly dimensions at Yankee Stadium. He was rocked in his previous outing in Oakland and is 0-4 since beating the Los Angeles Angels on May 7. "This is what we have. And as I said, its not like theres just starting pitchers lying around out there," New York manager Joe Girardi said, explaining that Nuno will stay in the rotation. "Right now, this is what it is." The left-hander yielded five runs -- four earned -- and six hits in 6 1-3 innings. He allowed three home runs and has served up 13 in 39 1-3 innings this season at home, where he is 0-3 with a 7.09 ERA. "My fastball today, I just left it up too much," Nuno said. "I trusted all my stuff today. No regrets and everything, but they just got to my fastball." Jones hit a solo shot with two outs in the first and drew a leadoff walk in the fourth before Cruz connected. Cruz began the day one home run behind Toronto slugger Edwin Encarnacion for the major league lead. "Hes carried us along a lot of the season," Hardy said. Pearces drive made it 5-1 in the fifth, and Hardy went deep off Jose Ramirez in the eighth for his 159th career homer and first since Sept. 5, 2013, against Jose Quintana of the Chicago White Sox. "We like hitting home runs," Jones said. Back in the dugout, Hardy got the silent treatment. He threw sunflower seeds on himself and was doused with water by Cruz. The two-time All-Star shortstop has hit at least 22 home runs five times, including a career-high 30 with Baltimore in 2011. "Normally I just put my head down and run. This time I kind of watched a little bit to make sure that it got up," Hardy said. "As I was rounding third, I looked into the dugout and no one had moved. So I kind of knew that they were going to sit there." NOTES: Baltimore recalled reliever Brad Brach from Triple-A Norfolk. ... Nuno has allowed 15 homers in 67 1-3 innings overall. ... Pineda (right shoulder muscle) will get another week off after an MRI still showed "a trace of inflammation," Girardi said. ... RHP Masahiro Tanaka (11-1, 1.99 ERA) starts Sundays series finale against Orioles RHP Chris Tillman (5-4, 4.82). Wayne Simmonds had a goal and an assist to lead Philadelphia to a 4-2 victory over the New York Rangers. Vincent Lecvalier, Sean Couturier and Luke Schenn also scored for Philadelphia, which rebounded from a 7-3 home defeat to San Jose on Thursday. Chris Kreider and Derick Brassard scored for the Rangers, who lost for just the second time in their past nine games. Philadelphia came out with an edge in the first period following Thursdays loss that Berube called "embarrassing." The Flyers improved to 4-0-1 this season following games in which theyve been beaten by four or more goals. "I think our guys have good character," Berube said. "I was pretty confident wed come out and play hard." Unlike Thursday against the Sharks, Berube liked what he saw on Saturday versus the Rangers. "Theyre a fast, hard-working team and if you want to compete with them you need to play a fast, hard game," he said. The opening 20 minutes featured physical play by both sides, including big hits from Philadelphias Zac Rinaldo on Daniel Carcillo and New Yorks Derek Stepan on Steve Downie, among others. The teams lingered on the ice for several minutes after the first-period horn, with the Rangers seemingly upset by a check from Brayden Schenn in front of New Yorks bench late in the period. The Flyers scored twice in the opening period, with the goals coming 1:06 apart. Lecavalier opened the scoring at 7:04 on a goal that went off Rangers defenceman Anton Stralman. "Thats huge," Lecavalier said. "You want to get that first goal and we got that." Brayden Schenn first was credited with the goal, but it was changed in between periods. Couturier followed with his 10th goal of the season at 8:10, beautifully deking past Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist and roofing the puck with a forehand shot into an empty net from a difficult angle. It looked as if the Rangers cut the deficit in half early in the second period, but Benoit Pouliots apparent tally was waved off because Pouliot deflected the puck past Flyers goalie Steve Mason with a high stick. Mason finished with 33 saves. Mason was pulled in Thursdays defeat to San Jose, and he was happy to bounce back with a victory. The fact that he outdueled one of the games premier goalies was secondary. "It feels good," Mason said. "But I wasnt going out there (thinking) Steve Mason versus Henrik Lundqvist. I was ttrying to help the Flyers beat the Rangers, and thats what we did.dddddddddddd" New York got on the board a few minutes later when Kreider tipped Rick Nashs pass past Mason and just inside the post from close range. After Kreider missed a great chance to tie the game when his backhanded attempt at an empty net went wide with 10 minutes left in the period, Brassards power-play goal at 11:42 of the second tied the game at 2. Brassards slap shot from the slot after a perfect pass from Brad Richards went off Masons pads and through his legs. Simmonds beat Lundqvist through the legs on a forehand shot from a tough angle on the power play at 13:23 to put Philadelphia back in front 3-2. "I read a high shot and he went five-hole," Lundqvist said. "I thought I was patient on the shot; he just beat me. I thought overall we played a really good game and created a lot of good chances. Disappointing, obviously, but I thought we did a lot of good things." Philadelphia had an apparent goal waved off 3 1/2 minutes into the third period when the officials ruled that Lundqvist had covered the puck even though it trickled into the goal. Mason kept the Flyers in front with a strong, sprawling pad save on Stepan from just in front of the crease with 10 minutes left. Luke Schenn provided an insurance goal with 3:45 left, beating Lundqvist with a wrister from the slot. Lundqvist, who didnt start the Rangers first game following the Olympic break after helping Sweden earn the silver medal in Sochi, finished with 27 saves. He entered the Olympic break having won his last five starts. In his last 14 games against Philadelphia entering Saturday, Lundqvist was 12-2-0 with a 1.77 GAA. Philadelphia defenceman Kimmo Timonen returned to the lineup after sitting out Thursdays 7-3 loss to San Jose to rest after returning from Sochi and had two assists. wing deep to the Denver secondarNEWARK, N.J. -- Ray Emery gave up four goals on 15 shots in 22:47 of playing time, and even had a fight Friday against Washington. On Saturday against New Jersey, he showed a different kind of fight. Emery stopped all 14 shots he faced, leading the Flyers past the Devils 1-0 in perhaps last-place Philadelphias most complete effort of the season. "A night like tonight, its not that hard to stay focused after a game like last night," said Emery, who participated in a line brawl between the Flyers and Capitals, headlined by him fighting an unwilling Braden Holtby in the 7-0 loss. "You challenge yourself and you could see it in the whole team that we were embarrassed. "We were gonna show how much we wanted to play tonight." The Flyers, coming off easily their worst game of the season, indeed put together a gutsy effort that was enough to beat a New Jersey team that hadnt played since Tuesday. "I knew the guys would be ready to go," Flyers coach Craig Berube said. "They were obviously very frustrated and upset at the game against Washington. I knew that the focus was there and (they) played a strong game." Philadelphia recorded just its fourth win of the season, and perhaps turned a corner at the Prudential Center, of all places, a building in which the Flyers had failed to get a victory in the past six tries. "Its been a tough building for us to come in and play," Berube said. "I thought we finally had the patience to beat them in a game. Thats basically what it boils down to." On Friday, Emery received the highest total of 29 penalty minutes. He was charged with leaving the goal crease, instigating a fight, and fighting. He was also ejected from the game. In the melee, a total of 114 penalty minutes were handed out. "Theres a reason that stuff happens last night in the game. They care," Berube said. "Theyre mad and theyre frustrated. I know what theyre feeling. Ive been there. I knew theyd be ready." The Flyers scored the lone goal on a deflection by Brayden Schenn, who altered a shot from Andrej Meszaros, to beat New Jerseys Martin Brodeur at 14:29 of the first period. "Its just important to have a bounce-back effort after last night. It really was a complete team game from start to finish," Emery said. "The most encouraging thing was the third period where we really took it to them. They didnt get anything. They got two shots. We needed that after last night." Emery, in his second stint with the Flyers, posted his 15th career shutout. "Hes been a winner and a battler his whole life," Berube added. "I knew hed have a good game." The Devils simply didnt get the effort they wanted, going 0-for-5 on the power play. New Jersey had just three shots with the man advantage. "We just didnt play very well," New Jerseys Jaromir Jagr said. "We didnt play good enough to win the game, and we didnt have to play extra good (to win)." New Jersey was short two forwards, as Patrik Elias (upper body) and Travis Zajac (ankle) were late scratches. "We had some power plays," Jagr said, "(but) we had to change it because we missed two guys right before the game." New Jersey will be in Minnesota on Sunday, and Zajac and Elias will not be with the team. Brodeur -- who made his third consecutive start in the loss and finished with 20 saves -- said he will not play vs. the Wild. "I thought Marty was good, he gave us a chance to win," Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. "I thought, defensively, we were fine. We were good enough to win. "It was the other end of the ice that didnt get the job done." NOTES: The NHL did not suspend Emery for his actions in Fridays brawl. ... Devils F Mattias Tedenby played in place of Elias. . ATLANTA - Raul Jimenezs late header for Mexico went just wide in a 0-0 draw with Nigeria in an international friendly Wednesday at the Georgia Dome. The game between World Cup qualifiers attracted 68,212 fans, the largest crowd for a football match in Atlanta. The previous record was 54,229 for a 2013 Gold Cup doubleheader that included Mexico. Nigerian backup goalkeeper Austin Ejide, a late substitute for Vincent Enyeama, had to make a couple of saves in the final 10 minutes, but he would not have reached Jimenezs shot if it were on target. Jimenez got to a corner at the far post and his diving header sailed inches outside the post. Mexico will play a friendly against the United States on April 2 in Glendale, Arizona. Usually plays out this way.ORLANDO, Fla. -- Billy Donovans bench came up big, bailing out top-seeded Florida in a tight game against what was supposed to be an overmatched opponent. Dorian Finney-Smith scored 16 points, most of them on dunks, and the Gators used a second-half surge to beat No. 16 seed Albany 67-55 in the NCAA tournament Thursday. The Gators (33-2) showed some vulnerability, though, while extending their school-record winning streak to 27 games. Donovans team sleepwalked through the first half, swapping the lead back and forth with the pesky Great Danes, but Floridas bench provided a much-needed spark. Finney-Smith, the Southeastern Conferences sixth man of the year, was 6-of-10 shooting and tough to handle in the post. Freshman guard Kasey Hill, who wasnt sure he would be able to play because of turf toe, chipped in 10 points off the bench and was dynamic on the open floor. Patric Young finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double of the season. Casey Prather (16 points) and Scottie Wilbekin (10) also reached double figures for Florida, which will play ninth-seeded Pittsburgh in the South Region on Saturday. DJ Evans led Albany (19-15) with 21 points and seven rebounds. He set the tone for the Great Danes early, but couldnt do enough to pull off the most elusive enough in college basketball. Floridas win made No. 1 seeds 117-0 against 16 seeds since the NCAA tournament expanded to 64 teams in 1985. But this one was far from a lopsided affair. The first half couldnt have gone much better for Albany, which was back on the court less than 48 hours after the programs first NCAA tournament win. The Great Danes, who beat Mount St. Marys in the First Four in Daytona, Ohio, made 10 of their first 15 shots and hung with Florida. Albany did an impressive job breakinng Floridas press.dddddddddddd And coach Will Brown had a clear game plan on defence: Dont let Michael Frazier II get any clean looks from 3-point range, beg Prather to take jumpers and sag in the post on centre Young. The Gators took the bait -- for a while. Frazier was scoreless in the first half, Prather turned into a jump shooter and Young was missing early on. But Donovan adjusted, like hes done so many other times this season, and got Florida rolling. Wilbekin started driving and dishing, creating easy baskets for Young and Finney-Smith at the rim. Finney-Smith had six consecutive points that seemed to get the SEC champs going, and Prather followed with a three-point play. Floridas final 10 baskets of the first half were in the paint. Still, Donovan was livid at halftime and ripped his players for a lack of defence. They responded with a 9-0 run early -- spearheaded by defence -- in the second half that turned out to be the difference. Young started it with a three-point play. Hill followed with a driving layup and then added two free throws after a turnover. Will Yeguete got another steal, and Finney-Smiths emphatic dunk capped the spurt. It was exactly what Florida needed. The Gators pretty much held on from there, making enough post plays and free throws to keep Albany at bay. For Florida, the NCAA tournament has been the goal all season. But as the wins mounted, they turned their attention toward winning a national title. Theyve looked capable much of the season, becoming the first team in SEC history to finish the regular season 18-0 and then won SEC tournament by pulling out tight games against fellow NCAA tournament teams Tennessee and Kentucky. But their performance Thursday left Donovan and many bracket managers shaking their heads. TEMPE, Ariz. - A visit to a spine specialist confirmed what already had been diagnosed: Arizona quarterback Carson Palmer has a dead nerve in his throwing shoulder.Palmer visited the specialist on Wednesday, and said Thursday that no structural damage was detected. No surgery, he said. Its not career ending, its not season ending, nothing like that. So that was all positive. Im just going to continue to do the rehab Ive been doing with our guys and Im very confident its going to wake back up.Palmer said the doctor told him the chances were one in 100,000 of him falling on the shoulder in just the wrong way to put pressure on the nerve and shut it down.I can get tackled thousands of times, he said, it just happened that my arm was in the wrong position.Palmer has not officially been ruled out of Sundays game at Denver, but all signs point to Drew Stanton making his third straight start. The shoulder felt better a week ago so he did some throwing, activity that irritated the nerve again.I threw 20 per cent of what I typically throw as far as velocity is concerned, he said. I havent gone out there and just chucked the ball all over the field. Thats not what theyve told me to do.It was enough to cause his shoulder to regress. One of the things Ive learned is that nerves are very finicky and theyre very unpredictable, Palmer said. Its not like a sprained ACL where its a 2-4 week thing. Its just something where Ive got to continue to work and when its ready, its ready. He said this isnt a typical football injury. The doctor I saw yesterday sees them a lot in car accidents, Palmer said. So its not something thats just kind of run of the mill.He acknowledged being frustrated but said its his nature to have a positive attitude.Im taking it one day at a time, Palmer said. Im coming in every day. Im the first in here and the last to leave every day. Im preparing that when it turns on, Im ready to go.Arizona (3-0) enters Sundays game as a touchdown underdog but as one of two unbeaten teams remaining in the NFL.Palmers shoulder was hurt when he landed on it while trying to run for a first down in the Cardinals 18-17 season-opening win over San Diego. Stanton, who had not taken a snap in a regular-season game in four years, came on to direct Arizona to a road victory over the New York Giants, followed by a home win over San Francisco. The team had a bye last week, and Palmer was hopeful that time off would allow him to be ready to play.Im just going to stick with the protocol and hope and pray that it wakes back up, he said. ... Weve tried everything. They (his doctors and trainers) have done a great job of doing research, calling different doctors all over the place, calling people all over the country, trying to find out if anybody has any information on it.He has tried dry needle treatment, deep-tissue massage and acupuncture. While he waits for the nerve to respond, Palmer said hes doing what he can to help the team.Im going to do everything I can to help guys around me, he said, to help Drew obviously, and Im always on the receivers and skill position guys during practice and in meetings, helping out any way I can. And Im going to continue to stay positive and be as influential as I can without getting in the way.___AP NFL websites: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFLKevin Garnett Jersey . -- Crystal Webster avoided elimination at the 2013 Capital One Road to the Roar Olympic pre-trial curling tournament with an 8-5 win over Amber Holland on Thursday. DENVER -- Kenneth Faried was all smiles in Denvers locker room. And with good reason. The Nuggets forward scored a career-high 34 points and added 13 rebounds to lead Denver to a 137-107 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Wednesday night. "When I got my second foul, I sat down and looked up said, Wow, I have nine (points) already. I havent really played that much. This might be a career game," Faried said. "Thats what I love to do -- have fun and play basketball. When its that exciting and that much fun you have no worries, really. You just think about winning. "Coach (Brian Shaw) wanted me to impose my will on (the Pelicans) Anthony Davis ... not shy away or back down." That wasnt an issue in the second half, when Davis sat out with back spasms. He finished with six points and three rebounds. Tyreke Evans scored 27 points to lead New Orleans. The Nuggets raced to a 40-26 lead by the end of the first quarter and never looked back, making 15 of 27 3-pointers compared to 2 of 9 for New Orleans, a 39-point difference. The 137 points tied the Nuggets season scoring high. "They (Nuggets) just ran up and down the court and did what they wanted to do. They did make some unbelievable 3s, they were on fire tonight," Evans said. "We knew that at the beginning of the game Faried was going to come out aggressive and we didnt do a good job of stopping him." The Pelicans had no answers inside for Faried, who went unchecked numerous times for backdoor dunks and easy short jumpers. "I think that is how Faried should be playing," teammate Ty Lawson said. "I compare him to a little bit like Charles Barkley the way he can get the ball to the rim, make good decisions and pass it." Farieds previous career best was 32 points against the Lakers on March 7. "He is succeeding in areas he has struggled in before and so that is just making him supremely confident," Shaw said.dddddddddddd "When you have that (confidence) then the game starts to slow down for you." The Pelicans trailed 71-53 at halftime. The 71 points were the most they allowed in the first half this season. The previous high was 64 points twice. "We didnt play well to start the game. In the month of March we set a high bar for how we can play, regardless of whos on the floor," New Orleans coach Monty Williams said. "Since Ive been here weve never given up these type of numbers with our defence." Denver led 105-81 after three quarters and cruised to the victory from there. "Thats the toughest part for me, allowing teams to score like that," Williams said. "Thought they had way too many easy points in the paint." Reserve Aaron Brooks scored 24 points for Denver, going 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. "I just wanted to be more aggressive. Talked to coach before the game and he said he wanted at least three, so I got that quota," Brooks said. "The big guy (Davis) wasnt in there (in the second half), and once hes out its time to attack the rim. We shared the ball and had a lot of assists." The victory moved the Nuggets ahead of the Pelicans for 11th place in the Western Conference and gave them a split of the four-game season series. The Nuggets led in assists (34-21) and blocks (12-7) and committed fewer turnovers (11-16). The Pelicans held a 42-40 rebounding edge. NOTES: Nuggets F Wilson Chandler missed his sixth straight game with a left groin strain. ... Pelicans G Eric Gordon missed his seventh consecutive game with tendinitis in his left knee. ... BOSTON -- A day of treatment after getting hit by a pitch may have put Conor Gillaspie back on track. He hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer for his third hit of the game and the Chicago White Sox beat the struggling Boston Red Sox 8-3 on Tuesday night. "Sometimes you can benefit by getting hurt and getting a day off and recharging," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "Hes swinging the bat fine. Running, Im sure, hes still sore." Gillaspie could just trot around the bases when his second homer of the season gave the White Sox a 5-3 lead in the sixth inning. Two days earlier, a pitch from Dominic Leone hit him in the right leg in the fifth inning of Chicagos 1-0 win over the Seattle Mariners. Gillaspie bruised his right knee and left for a pinch runner, then missed Chicagos 4-0 win over Boston on Monday night. "Obviously, it was a little bit sore," he said, "but I think getting treatment a whole entire day, 10 hours worth of treatment, I think it helped everything for me." He went 3 for 4 after going 4 for 29 in his previous nine games. "I was fortunate it missed my knee for the most part," Gillaspie said. Boston snapped Chicago pitchers streak of 22 scoreless innings but lost for the seventh time in eight games as the defending World Series champions remained in last place in the AL East. "Were just not very consistent," Red Sox catcher David Ross said. "When we do score runs, we havent pitched the way we wanted to, and when we pitched the way we need to we havent scored runs." The White Sox are 5-1 in their last six games, allowing three runs or less in all six with a scoring margin of 25-9. John Danks (8-6) started with four shutout innings on Tuesday night after Hector Noesi beat Seattle on Sunday and Scott Carroll won on Monday night when Boston had just two hits. The White Sox squandered a 3-0 lead when the Red Sox tied it with three runs in the fifth. But Chicago went ahead with two in the sixth and then added three in the ninth. Jose Abreu started the sixth with a single against Brandon Workman (1-3). With two outs, Gillaspie hit a 3-and-2 pitch just inside the right-field pole. He had singled, doubled and scored a run earlier. Abreu had two doubles and a single and has hit safely in 21 of his last 22 games. Chicago added three run-scoring extra-base hits in the ninth -- a triple by Alejandro De Aza and doubles by Gordon Beckham and Paul Konerko. The White Sox took a 2-0 lead with unearned runs in the second. They loaded the bases on a walk to Adam Dunn and singles by Alexei Ramirez and Gillaspie. Dunn scored on an error by first baseman Mike Napoli and Ramirez came in when De Aza grounded into a double play. Napoli appeared to be trying to transfer the ball from his glove to his right hand to throw home for a force play. "Any time you give extra outs, youre asking for trouble," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "Over the past five games weve given up a number of extra outs that have led to runs." Chicago made it 3-0 in the fourth when Gillaspie doubled and scored on a single by De Aza. The Red Sox, the lowest-scoring team in the American League, failed to score after loading the bases in the first and fourth. They finally got to Danks, 5-1 in his last seven starts, in the fifth. Brock Holt tripled when centre fielder De Aza let the ball get behind him after he raced in and dived for it. Dustin Pedroia and Napoli followed with run-scoring doubles and Xander Bogaerts tied it with an RBI single. But Danks ended the threat by striking out the next two batters. "Sharp or not, I was able to make a pitch when I needed to," he said. NOTES: Ross threw out two runners trying to steal second -- De Aza in the fourth and Adam Eaton in the fifth. ... Chicagos streak of six games allowing three runs or less is its longest since seven straight from May 2-9, 2011. ... John Isner, the top-seeded player at the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships in Newport, Rhode Island, threw out a ceremonial first pitch. ...
